The World
☢ Russian soldiers leave Chornobyl nuclear plant Troops suffered radiation sickness after digging trenches at contaminated site.
☢ Nuking their own Russian troops sent in to occupy the Chornobyl nuclear power plant were unprotected and unaware of the radiation dangers. Some fell ill with signs of radiation sickness, prompting an evacuation and apparent end of the occupation. Plant workers were shocked at stories of Russian troops digging trenches in the Red Forest, the most radioactive area in the Exclusion Zone.
☢ Can We Contain Nuclear Crises? Interview with Environmental Historian Kate Brown, MIT. “I would sleep better right now if Ukraine was chock-full with solar power and wind generators. In a war there might be toxic waste spread around those places from the batteries, but then you could clean them up. That’s not true with somebody hitting a nuclear installation. The toxins last for centuries.”
☢ Troublemaking: more questions about plutonium funding for New Brunswick and nuclear weapons proliferation Canadians should be alarmed – outraged, even – by Ottawa’s seemingly cavalier attitude to the security dangers inherent in its embrace and subsidization of private companies hawking promises of nuclear techno-fixes to our climate change obligations.
☢ NB Green Party leader on New Brunswick's SMR nightmare: reprocessing / plutonium 1 minute video recorded from the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, March 31, 2022
☢ Nuclear power: not fit for purpose Nuclear power is increasingly marketed as part of the solution to the climate crisis. In fact it’s dirty, dangerous, expensive, won’t help with our climate problems, and there are far more jobs in renewables. 23 min. video recording of Dr. Paul Dorfman.
☢ Small modular reactors not the answer to our urgent climate crisis Wind and solar power are manifestly proven, while SMRs are a boutique technology that have yet to prove their viability anywhere. - T.O. Star Business writer David Olive.
☢ CBC radio interview with Gordon Edwards on Small Modular Nuclear Reactors
☢ An Alternative Policy for Canada on Radioactive Waste Management and Decommissioning A national coalition of public interest groups released this policy for Canada to manage radioactive waste for the public good.
☢ Green Bonds for renewable – not nuclear – energy Civil society commends the Government of Canada for recognizing that nuclear energy does not belong in a green climate strategy.
Ontario
☢ Celebrating our 25th Anniversary With You 25 years ago we had an idea – to phase out coal in Ontario. We won! 25 years later, we’re still here working for a renewable Ontario. To help us celebrate our 25th anniversary, a donor will match all the donations we receive this month up to $25,000!
☢ Excuse us, we’re gassy Ontario is ramping up gas – but it’s a nasty GHG. It’s definitely time for Ontario to change direction and get less gassy. Here’s how.
Renewables and Conservation
☼ Half of Ukraine’s renewable energy facilities threatened with destruction Almost half of Ukraine's renewables are now in a war zone, threatened with complete or partial destruction. Other European countries, panicked by a halt to Russian fossil fuel supplies, are turning to nuclear energy. It's the wrong choice and puts us all at great risk.
☼ Torrid Annual Growth Puts Wind & Solar on Track to Meet Climate Goals Wind and solar have arrived and the two renewables are poised for further, rapid growth. The global electricity transition is well under way.
☼ Microgrids and EVs can make magic with the right market signals Electric vehicles (EVs) could become important microgrid assets that reap income by providing grid services.
Take Action
☢ Say no to new nuclear in the GTA Tell Ontario's political leaders that you want investments in wind and solar energy, not a new GTA nuclear reactor.
☢ Stop the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in NW Ontario High-level nuclear waste should be managed using a "rolling stewardship" concept, rather than abandoning it in a deep geological repository. Learn more. Make a donation to help local organizers educate their neighbours.
☢ Tell Ottawa: no more funding for new nuclear reactors Tell federal Ministers to stop wasting our $ on polluting nuclear reactors.
Events
☢ The War in Ukraine and its Implications for our Nuclear Future Mon. April 11, 1 p.m. ET Speakers will address questions about nuclear risk, the future of nuclear arms control, and more. Hosted by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
☢ A Panel on Youth Peace Activism Wed. April 13, 8 p.m. ET Hosted by IPPNW CanadA (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War)
☢ Symposium on Rocky Flats: Impacts on the Environment and Health Sat. April 23, full-day webinar. From 1952 - 1989 the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant in Colorado produced plutonium triggers for atomic weapons.
☢ Goodbye sole purpose: The Biden administration’s emerging nuclear policy and budget Wed. Apr. 27, 2 p.m. ET Speakers will dive into topics like sole purpose, the recently released defense budget, the Biden nuclear posture review, ally management in the wake of the Ukraine War and more.
