The Far Right Will Decide the Environment’s Fate
How did we get here? In a globalized world, nearly identical conversations are being held in every hall of power, from national seats in Ottawa and Washington, DC, to continental forums like the one in Brussels. With almost every election, conservatives of many stripes are increasing their control over the entire Global North. Environmental protections aren’t the only things to worry about. But they’ll probably be the first to go.

Cars Are Slowing Down in European Cities
Across Europe, cities are proving that lowering speed limits – 20 - 30 kms max – makes neighborhoods safer and more livable while reducing dependence on cars. Residents like it and the number of accidents leading to serious injuries has dropped by 24%. Children also spend twice as long playing outdoors.

Plastics and the Transition from Oil and Gas: Opportunities in the Plastics Treaty Negotiations
Mon. June 17, 10 a.m. ET
We can't achieve a just and equitable phase out of fossil fuels if we don't tackle plastic production. Plastic production is a significant driver of oil and gas extraction, currently accounting for 14% of global oil demand. By 2050, plastic production is expected to nearly triple, relying heavily on fossil fuels both as feedstocks and energy sources. If these trends continue, plastics and other petrochemicals will lock in fossil fuel dependency, worsening the impacts disproportionately felt by Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities. The plastics treaty presents a unique opportunity to secure the pathway for transitioning away from oil and gas.

LNG exposed: Diving into health and environmental risks
Tues. June 18, 3 - 4 p.m. ET
This will be a vital conversation about liquefied natural gas, LNG, and its impacts. With multiple LNG projects proposed for B.C. and with our energy future set to be a high-profile issue in the heated provincial election coming up in October, this is a strategic time to learn more and speak more loudly about the wise energy choices we want our leaders to make with us and for us. The science and expert analysis are clear: LNG is a risky bet on every front, a risk we simply cannot take.

How the Swiss Women Won
Tues. June 18, 1 p.m. ET
For the past nine years, KlimaSeniorinnen, an association of 2,400 Swiss women over the age of 64, has been working to take Switzerland to court for its climate inaction. This April, they won their case. In a sixteen to one decision, the European Court of Human Rights affirmed that not only is Switzerland not doing enough to protect its population from climate change and its deadly heat, but that this failure to act is a violation of its people’s human rights.

Cap Pollution: Making polluters do their fair share through policy and people
Wed. June 19, 6 - 8 p.m. ET
Impact Hub Ottawa, 7th Floor, 123 Slater Street, Ottawa
The oil and gas emissions cap is a key climate policy for Canada. Emissions released from the production of oil and gas are the largest source of pollution in Canada. Since 1990, oil and gas pollution has nearly doubled. Without the cap, oil and gas emissions will continue growing unchecked, further threatening our health, environment and economy. Join us and our special guests for an in-person panel discussion on the impacts of fossil fuel pollution on our daily lives, and how you can take action in your community.

How Can We Save Pollution Pricing?
Thur. June 20, 7 p.m. ET
Too many Canadians are blaming the carbon tax for their financial pain, jeopardizing a climate policy most of us initially supported. What’s at stake isn’t just the price of gas – or the next election. The Axe the Tax campaign risks mortgaging our kids' future. How do we stand up for the principle that every parent teaches their children: when you make a mess, clean it up.
