Jimmy Carter: Nuclear Commemorations
In 1952, as a young U.S. Nuclear Navy officer and nuclear chemist, Carter was sent to Chalk River, Ontario, to help deal with the aftermath of the first known reactor disaster in world history. As US president, in 1977 Carter halted commercial nuclear waste reprocessing in the U.S. which chilled the technology globally. Carter was also famous for installing solar panels on the White House, and wearing a sweater to promote energy conservation.

AI goes nuclear
Big tech is turning to old reactors (and planning new ones) to power the energy-hungry data centers that artificial intelligence systems need. But both the government and the tech bros are largely ignoring the known and significant downsides of nuclear power—including high costs, long construction times, accidents, nuclear weapons proliferation risks, and environmental contamination from uranium mining and radioactive waste disposal.

Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities
Tues. Jan. 7, 11 a.m. ET
With Veronica Davis, Director Transportation for Houston, Co-Founder, Black Women Bike
Transportation planning has often had destructive consequences for underserved communities. During this webinar, Veronica will explain why centering people in transportation decisions requires a great shift in how transit planners and engineers are trained, how they communicate, the types of data they collect, and how they work as professional teams. She’ll define what “equity” means for a transportation project and how it can create something safer, better, and more useful for all people.
Veronica will conclude with a call to action to transit planners and engineers to reconnect with and help shape communities based on principles of justice and equity.

De-Growth versus Production & Consumption Under Late Capitalism
with Marxist Economist Michael Roberts
Sun. Jan. 12, 2 pm ET
Marxism has an undeserved reputation for urging more and more production of things to overcome poverty in the necessities of life. But is the production of 'more and more' really the answer to scarcity, or should our aim be to produce 'better' rather than 'more'? We need to ask: to what end should productivity increase, for whom, at what cost, requiring what level of exploitation, and measured by what criteria? And how could the goal of useful production be realized, democratically and equitably, on a world scale -- and before it is too late for nature and humanity? Hosted by Socialist Action.

The Scientists Who Alerted us to the Dangers of Radiation
Canadian book launch and webinar with authors: Dr. Ian Fairlie and Cindy Folkers
Thur. Jan. 16, noon - 1 p.m. ET
This book reveals that the harmful effects of radiation exposure – especially from the nuclear sector and especially to children – are more pervasive and worse than thought. These have been known for decades but suppressed by politically-motivated censorship and overt disparagement/persecution. Anyone who ever wondered about radiation or its close relative, radioactivity, should read the book and attend this webinar. It’s timely because the feds and several provincial governments are pushing hard for more public exposures to radiation via nuclear power. It explains radiation in easy-to-grasp language which clarifies its dangers and risks. Both authors will present on the webinar.
