Coalition urges PM Carney to drop nuclear from energy plan
A coalition of First Nations, physicians and environmental organizations is ramping up pressure on Prime Minister Mark Carney to drop nuclear energy from his “energy superpower” strategy, warning it comes with high costs, long delays and long-term risks.

The nuclear divide: Why are women cautious of nuclear energy?
This striking gender divide can be explained by safety concerns, ecofeminist ethics of care, and the nuclear industry’s macho culture. Their concerns are justified. Studies show women are twice as likely to develop radiation-related cancers, yet safety regulations often rely on the so-called “Reference Man” standard, ignoring biological differences.

Don’t let the Canada Pension Plan abandon its net-zero commitment
In 2022, our national pension manager that safeguards the retirement of 22 million hardworking Canadians, committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. But in May 2025, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) quietly abandoned that promise, putting our retirement security and climate future at risk. Send a message to CPPIB now. Demand they re-commit to net-zero emissions and protect the financial future of every Canadian who pays into the Canada Pension Plan.

EVENTS
Protest Against Doug Ford's Bill 5
Mon. May 26, 10 am to noon ET
Nathan Phillips Square, Queen and Bay, Toronto
Doug Ford is trying to pass Bill 5, a dangerous piece of legislation that would allow him and his developer allies to:
🚫 Build on endangered species habitats
🚫 Override protections for Indigenous lands and conservation areas
🚫 Ignore environmental laws, public consultation, and municipal bylaws
This bill would repeal Ontario’s Endangered Species Act, exempt Ford’s “trusted proponents” from the Environmental Bill of Rights, and open the door to unchecked development — from the Greenbelt to wetlands to the Ring of Fire. That’s why we’re gathering peacefully to say: No to Bill 5. No to corruption. No to selling off Ontario’s future.

The Challenge of Sustainable Urban Tourism in San Sebastian, Spain
Tues. May 27, 11 a.m. ET
Sustainable tourism is welcome. But sustainability must come from a foundational shift—a model guided by the needs of the resident population. It requires a very long-term vision that determines the direction the city wants to take. Otherwise, residents will increasingly find it difficult to say, “This is my city.” In his presentation, Victor will share the case of San Sebastian, a traditional tourist destination in the Basque Country in northern Spain, which has experienced exponential touristic growth over the past 12 years. This has created tensions among residents and raised questions about the city’s strategic direction. https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zynwgLGdTKWIVl0FmxxZZQ#/registration

The Radiation Scientists who Alerted us to the Dangers of Radiation
Tues. May 27, 7.45 a.m. ET
History shows us that radiation risks are a battleground of scientific opinions, values and politics. Broadly speaking, a gulf has existed (and still exists) between official estimations of radiation risks and the risks observed by many distinguished scientists in the latter part of the twentieth century. These scientists found evidence that radiation risks, including cancers and birth defects, were greater than official estimates. However, they and their scientific reports were often adversely treated by officialdom - both in the West and the East. These scientists consequently suffered career blight, cessation of funding, seizure of their data, peer group ostracism, as well as public criticism and opprobrium. The rub of the matter is that, from recent findings, we know that these scientists were correct. This talk will thus highlight some of the most noteworthy examples of this scientific whistleblowing, summarise key findings, and reflect upon their salience to contemporary understandings of radiation risks. This book launch will be a hybrid talk, both in person and on-line.
