“Our task of course, is to transmute the anger that is affliction into the anger that is determination to bring about change. I think, in fact, that one could give that as a definition of revolution.” - Barbara Deming

Canada’s AI strategy includes no new protections for water or climate
A single box in the 49-page document is dedicated to the environmental impacts of AI with no actions to curtail the impacts. Officials from Environment and Climate Change Canada were not invited to a Jan. 15, 2026, meeting on the AI strategy, to which 6 other federal departments were invited. Of the 26 questions in the consultation, none of them mentioned the environment.

‘Feedback from Thousands’ Prompts Ottawa to Delay Regulatory Rollback
Among the suite of measures proposed were: designating pre-approving development in certain ‘federal economic zones’, and giving the federal cabinet limited power to exempt projects from the ‘jeopardy test’ for species at risk. First Nations and civil society organizations mobilized, and Carney postponed the legislation till later in the summer.

TORONTO
NoJetsTO - Save Our Waterfront
Turning the Toronto Island Airport into a jet airport requires hundreds of meters of new runway built in the harbour and the lake. It would increase air and noise pollution, cancel 14,000 new homes, and turn the harbour into a polluted stagnant mess. It means Lake Ontario and the Toronto Harbour will be filled with concrete. It means destroying our ability to swim, boat, sunbathe, cycle and walk along the waterfront. Tell your MP to say no.

EVENTS
Santa Marta and the Future of Climate Journalism
Tues. June 9, 9:30 a.m. ET
When representatives from nearly 60 countries met in Santa Marta, Colombia, in April to discuss pathways for accelerating climate action and shifting away from fossil fuels, it represented one of the most significant multinational efforts in recent years to address the climate crisis. It also highlighted the critical role of journalism in helping the public understand complex environmental challenges at a time of intense news cycles, shrinking newsroom resources, and growing disinformation.

On to Ottawa Trek to Save Our Waterfront
Wed. June 10, all day
Join Toronto MPP Chris Glover and fellow Torontians as we travel to Ottawa to call on PM Carney to take a clear public position on the proposed expansion of the Billy Bishop Airport. The Billy Bishop Airport is under federal jurisdiction, meaning key decisions about its operations and any proposed expansion are ultimately the responsibility of the federal government, not the City of Toronto or the Province of Ontario. That’s why we’re heading to Ottawa to bring our concerns directly to the federal level about the future of Toronto's waterfront. Carpooling available. All welcome.

What do Canadians really think about climate change?
Thur. June 11, noon ET
Do some Canadians really believe climate change is a hoax? It’s hard to believe, but in 2025 this was a legitimate question for up to 34% of Canadians. It’s a deeply worrying trend that speaks to shifting national conversations around economic security and national unity. And it’s put Canadians in a double bind: Canadians support cleaner energy at home, but feel the country’s broader economic future—thanks in part to sustained political and industrial messaging—depends on fossil fuels. Climate organizations and communicators are forced to navigate this tricky moment marked by policy reversals, new pipeline projects, positive electrification progress, growing uncertainty about where Canada is heading and a population that is confused about the causes of climate change. Join Re.Climate for the launch of our latest public opinion rollup, where we’ll explore what recent public opinion research says about how Canadians are thinking about climate change, energy politics and the government’s climate action right now.

World Naked Bike Ride - Toronto
Sat. June 13, meet at noon for bike decorating and body painting, leave at 1 p.m. ET
Coronation Park just east of Ontario Place (waterfront)
The annual tradition combines activism and audacity, bringing participants together to protest society's dependence on oil and advocate for more sustainable transportation. By showcasing alternative ways to get around the city, riders hope to draw attention to the cause while making a serious statement in a rather cheeky way. But beyond fossil fuel dependence, the ride brings awareness to other important issues such as urban pollution, cycling safety, and body acceptance. Toronto's ride is part of a worldwide movement that takes place in cities across the globe each year. And while bicycles are the main attraction, rollerbladers, skateboarders, scooter riders, and even walkers are welcome to participate. Participants are encouraged to be "as bare as they dare," though full nudity is by no means required. While some riders prefer to stay partially (or even fully) clothed, others opt for body paint, costumes, or creative accessories to cover their important bits. Helmets and footwear, on the other hand, are still strongly recommended. The approx. 16-km route takes participants through several of Toronto's best-known neighbourhoods and landmarks, including Trinity Bellwoods, Kensington Market, Yorkville, Church Street, Yonge Street, Nathan Phillips Square, and the waterfront.

Climate Talks for Everyone presents a vision for future mobility
Sun. June 14, 1 p.m. ET
Katja Kircher, Associate Professor, presents on future mobility, “Hot take – cycling research is in fact pro car”. Much of the research around cycling research is concerned with incremental improvements to cycling. However, the car-centric system remains untouched. This is illustrated with examples. Ostacles for transitional research are discussed.
