Nuclear power’s quarter-century of stagnation has no end in sight, and has been overtaken by solar PV

Nuclear supplied 8.8% of global electricity in 2025, down from its peak of 17.5% in 1996. The average operating reactor is now almost 33 years old, and more than one-third have been operating for at least 41 years. While nuclear capacity grew by just 1.5 GW in 2025, solar grew by 510 GW, wind grew by 159 GW, and grid-scale battery capacity grew 79% in a single year.

It has been quite a week on the fossil front. Carney's announcements included: new LNG facility to be 2nd largest in the world; doubling capacity of the Costal Gaslink Pipeline; and a new Pacific Link pipeline to be designated as being in the “national interest”. Relax, our fossil fuels are a form of climate action, runs the tortured logic.

How We Face Rising Authoritarianism: Lessons from the U.K.

Wed. Oct. 7, 1 - 2 p.m. ET

Across the U.K. and around the world, organizations are facing increasingly hostile political forces. What can you, your organization, and your allies do now to protect your mission, strengthen your networks, and prepare for what may come? Join Natasha Adams, a leading U.K. movement researcher and strategist, for a timely conversation about how the U.K. reached this point—and what others can learn from its experience. Natasha will explore why progressive nonprofits and funders were initially caught off guard by the rapid rise of far-right and authoritarian movements. More importantly, she’ll share what is being done now to respond. Natasha will be joined by Kate Turner of the Building Power Network, who will bring a Canadian perspective to the discussion and explore what these lessons could mean for you and your organization.

Community Reborn

Online OR in person at Isabel Theatre, Toronto

For generations, people across Canada have come together to support each other through volunteering, donating, joining, and leading. So why do 51% of Canadians say they’re feeling lonely? As traditional social spaces begin to fade, the fundamental systems and supports that keep communities connected and resilient are facing a quiet yet critical inflection point. At The Walrus Talks Community Reborn, leading thinkers and civic leaders will explore how nonprofits are the invisible glue holding our society together. From building civic participation to studying Indigenous community models, our speakers will reveal how we can save the services that improve and enrich our lives. As a historic intergenerational transfer of wealth approaches and donor habits shift, join us live in Toronto or online for an important conversation about combating loneliness, bridging divides, and building a future where every Canadian feels they belong.
