Portland, the large piece of water front land in between Leslie and Cherry
Street, will be the site of Toronto's major development project. Yet, this
piece of land has a lot of significance...

- Leslie Split has turned itself from a construction debris dumpsite to
become birds haven, with diversity higher than Algonquin.

- It has a long of mark left by the industrial era of Toronto, with toxic
still in its soil.

- A history of pollution, in the past and in the present

- a vigorous site of ecological entanglement, between the community and
government, including the tug-of-war for whether of not what facilities
should be built there:
the most recent: the cherry beach tree cut...

- An urban wasteland for Toronto people to take break

- a site of hope as communities actively involved in
 the future development as well as ready to action watch-dogs.

"Mrs. Warren's Profession" Comes to Hart House at U of T, July 9-14

Friends,

We're writing to let you know about a unique, inexpensive entertainment
opportunity taking place in downtown Toronto July 9-14 at 8 pm.

As part of the internationally acclaimed Toronto Fringe Festival, Burning
Passions Theatre is inaugurating its "Shaw in the City!" program with a
production of the classic George Bernard Shaw comedy, Mrs. Warren's
Profession, a biting satire on gender inequality as relevant today as when
it was first written.

All tickets to this production are a remarkable $10, and performances take
place in the beautiful, historic Music Room of Hart House at the University
of Toronto (7 Hart House Circle, 2nd Floor). Hart House is a wheelchair
accessible facility.

With a running time of 90 minutes, this show, which has delighted
audiences for over a century, is sure to leave audience members with a
smile on their face and perhaps a tear in their eyes as they witness the
age-old mother-daughter conflict that Shaw so ably created. Despite his
huge body of works, Shaw is rarely performed in Toronto, and this series
is a new opportunity to enjoy one of the 20th century's most influential
playwrights performed by a crack team of professional artists.

Burning Passions Theatre has for a decade produced a wide range of works,
largely focused on telling the stories of women and youth.

A century after George Bernard Shaw's "Mrs. Warren's Profession" took dead
aim at a society that offered few economic choices to women and
undervalued their labour, conditions for women in the labour market still
lag far behind those for men. Indeed, on June 12, 2007, Statistics Canada
revealed women continue to lag significantly behind their male
counterparts in the workforce, despite the increase in women earning
university degrees.  Shaw wrote in 1898, "Mrs Warren's Profession was
written to draw attention to the truth that prostitution is caused, not by
female depravity and male
licentiousness, but simply by underpaying, undervaluing and overworking
women so shamefully that the poorest of them are forced to resort to
prostitution."
