Mr. David Hughes has spent a lifetime studying the supply side of Canada's
energy question at NRCan and the Canadian Geological Survey.  Quite
literally no one in the world knows more about this subject than he and
only a handful know as much.

When such a man tells us that the conservation not generation offers us by
far our best chance at a comfortable future it would be best that we all
stop to listen.

On Wed. he will participate on a panel in a Toronto City Hall Committee
room #4.

'Canadian Energy Security in the context of Climate & Supply Questions'

On the Sept. 12 panel will be David Hughes of NRCan, Ralph Torrie of ICF,
Cherise Burda of Pembina and Enbridge Gas has also been asked to supply a
speaker.

Mr. Hughes is in town on his way to a Roundtable on Climate Change and
Energy hosted by the Breuninger Foundation, and cosponsored by Science for
Peace and the David Suzuki Foundation a good example of the kind of
respect his work is accorded.

Ralph Torrie is today a consultant for ICF and for decades has been a
leading proponent for the ecological and climatic benefits to energy
efficiency and a reduction of our ecological footprint.  He is also
someone who has over the years justly earned a reputation for being as
balanced as he is wise and humorous.

Cherise Burda comes to us from easily one of the most important research
institutes on the twin challenges of Energy & Emissions the Pembina
Institute and we hope to have Malini Ghiridar the person in charge of
energy strategy for Enbridge Gas here in Ontario.

Community Forum: Is Bottled Water Safe?

Bottled water is the number one growing segment of the beverage
industry in North America
The bottled water trend has social, environmental and health impacts
that can be avoided by drinking tap water
There is a need to unpack the purity myth of bottled water that
undermines trust in tap water
We need to support and reinvest in public tap water systems

This forum will feature three knowledgeable panellists discussing
the social, health and environmental impacts of the bottled water trend as
well as the importance of supporting public tap water systems.
Panellists are: Zoe Maggio, Polaris Institute, Martina Rowley, Environmental
Communicator, Tim Maguire, Vice-President CUPE local 79.
Two community action workshops aimed at developing one to two
practical steps that can be taken by community members to help curb the
growing bottled water trend.

Join OCAP at the September 26 Anti Poverty Day of Action

On Wednesday, September 26, a broad coalition of community organizations,
trade unions, health providers and low income people will be challenging
Queen's Park to increase social assistance, raise the minimum wage and
build affordable/social housing.

There will be a rally at the Ontario Legislature under the name of
"Toronto Anti Poverty". Many of the organizations participating in the
event, will hold their own actions on that day before marching on the
Legislature for the united event.
