The Colour of Poverty Campaign seeks to promote an understanding of how
poverty arises within and impacts upon racialized groups. We suggest
ways, tools and strategies to work towards equity and inclusion in
Ontario.
The Campaign is proud to host its first provincial Forum.
The two-day Forum will attract community members from across the province
of Ontario, feature representatives from media, labour, academic and
government sectors, and include workshops to strategize and develop a
shared framework for addressing social exclusion, with a focus on concerns
regarding education, health, employment, income levels, justice and
policing, housing, immigration settlement and more.

Stuff".

In an entertaining and easy to understand manner, this film reveals that
the great indoors is not as safe as we've been lulled into thinking.
Toxicologists have found that the levels of most
indoor air pollutants exceed those found outdoors - even in our most
polluted cities. The sources, from cleaning products, pesticides, paint
dust, lead particles in the carpet, plastic toys and tips for safer
practices, materials, and cleaning agents, are explained and suggested
ways to 'reduce'.

Torture Tour of Toronto
Thursday, May 1, 9 am-2 pm
The Caravan to End Canadian Involvement in Torture kicks off with a
torture tour of Toronto on Thursday, May 1, beginning at 9 am. What,
exactly, IS a torture tour of Toronto?
It's an opportunity for us to publicly name corporations and government
entities that are complicit, either directly or indirectly, in acts of
torture. That complicity may be contracting with the government to deport
to torture those held under the unconstitutional secret hearing "security
certificates" ; it may be an "intelligence agency" that sent questions to
torturers in Syria and Egypt who used those questions to torture Canadian
citizens; it may be war manufacturers who are part of corporate empires
that include private "interrogation" teams implicated in torture and
murder in places like Abu Ghraib, Bagram Air Force Base, and Guantanamo
Bay.
The May 1 Torture Tour of Toronto kicks off the Caravan to End Canadian
Involvement in Torture, which will be spending the following eight days on
the road to Ottawa, engaged in educational efforts and public action to
call for an end to Canadian complicity in torture.

Quebec is ground-zero for health care privatization. A recent Supreme
Court decision along with new legislation, have opened the floodgates to
private clinics and two-tiered care. For years now right-wing think tanks
have targeted Quebec as the new testing ground for private health care and
the province is facing a deep crisis within their system.
Now an exciting and unprecedented coalition of Labour groups and the
community sector has emerged to turn the tide and end the bankrupting of
the public system and the expansion of privatization. On May 3rd this
coalition is holding what promises to be a massive demonstration in
downtown Montreal as part of the celebration of International Workers Day.
In an important move, they have requested actions in Solidarity be taken
across Canada.
The Ontario Health Coalition wants to make a strong showing across
Ontario. We are asking people across the province to step up and organize
an action in their community.
On the morning of Friday May 2nd across Ontario the morning rush hour will
be marked by groups standing prominently at busy intersections with signs
and visuals asking motorists to "Honk for public health care", "Slam the
brakes on privatization" and "Lock the doors on private clinics".
Join us in Toronto to make this a strong showing.

JANE'S WALK -- Green Roofs Tour*
will be held on *Sunday, May 4* from *11 am to 1:00 pm*.
Enjoy a spectacular view of the downtown skyline while standing amongst a
prairie grassland 5-storeys above busy Spadina. Visit a 100-foot vine
thought to be the one of the oldest living things in the neighbourhood.
Learn how local businesses have adopted neglected street trees. This tour
begins and ends on building rooftops (401 Richmond Ave, 215 Spadina Ave)
that have been transformed into vibrant green oases. As we make our way
from rooftop to rooftop we will explore the urban forest struggling to
survive below. Stops will profile efforts to incorporate nature into this
dense urban area and in turn create a more liveable city.

Gold mining and indigenous resistance
On May 6 and May 20 there will be peaceful protests and press conferences
outside the AGMs of Barrick Gold and Goldcorp in Toronto, two of the
world's largest gold mining operations. Here is a report from a Barrick

Toxic mining tailings, the exploitaint and disregard for indigenous
peoples, human rights abuses, murder, corruption, violence and
environmental devestation are the topics of the press conferences.
Indigenous activists will be flown in for both.

the two groups sponsoring these events. Students Against Climate Change

*ANNEX TREE TOUR* will be held on
*Saturday, May 10* from *2:00 pm to 4:00 pm*.
This tour, led by arborist Todd Irvine, will explore the wonderful trees
of the historic Annex neighbourhood. Visit an ancient white oak—thought to
be one of the largest in the city—growing just steps away from one of
Toronto’s busiest streets. Wander down back alleys to discover hidden
giants, including a 70-foot tall bur oak. Venture into the past as we gaze
down a tree-lined boulevard onto St. Stephen’s in the Field, a
150-year-old Victorian Gothic style church that was once surrounded by
gardens and grasslands. The tour will commence from Harbord Village in the
south, then cross Bloor Street, and enter the Annex proper. Joining us on
the tour will be members of the Harbord Village Residents Association and
The Annex Residents Association who will share stories about helping the
forest canopy in their neighbourhoods.

The Community Bicycle Network is inviting nominations to the board.
We'd like people who are passionate about cycling and about what CBN
is offering to the community in our new guise as an "enterprising
non-profit". We've got a strong presence this spring, refurbishing and
fixing up bikes as fast as we can. We've had some quite successful
wheelbuilding workshops, and have given away around 10 bikes to people
referred from service agencies like St. Christopher House. We hope to
expand the number of donations we accept as well as the number of
recycled bikes we get out the door.
We've got great staff who are driven to see CBN flourish. We'd like to
ensure that we also have a strong board who can participate in this
vision and have experience in anything from bookkeeping, law, and
bicycles to promotions.
