Thirst for Profit: A Story of Privatization of Water
A film by Fernando Rouaux
22 min
Wednesday, May 7
6pm - 8pm
OISE, Room 3-311
252 Bloor St. W.
Please join us for a screening of Fernando's film about water in Buenos
Aires, Argentina
When the World Bank convinced Argentina to privatize the national water
company, it was supposed to become more efficient and to reach millions of
people who lacked basic water services. Thirteen years later, the private
company has fled and the service has been re-nationalized. What went
wrong?
THIRST FOR PROFIT is a story of market logic applied to basic services: a
story of big profits, and a story of the hardships of being poor at the
mercy of corporate and government corruption.

In an interest to "improve the pedestrian realm," the city wants to remove
the middle lane of traffic from Jarvis St. (between Bloor and Queen) and
use that extra space to widen the sidewalks.
If you've walked down Jarvis, you'll notice that the sidewalks are already
incredibly wide. We have lots of problems on Jarvis, but sidewalk width
is not one of them. What's infuriating, is that the possibility of adding
bike lanes was not considered, and neither were the effects of this
proposal on cyclists on Jarvis or neighbouring streets.
There will be a " Jarvis Streetscape Walk" on Saturday May 10th: Please
invite those interested in getting bike lanes implemented on Jarvis!
