The saving of our world from pending doom will come, not through the
complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the creative
maladjustment of a nonconforming minority.

Green Acres II:
When Neighbors Become Farmers
When suburbanites look out their front doors, a lot of them want to see a
lush green lawn. Kipp Nash wants to see vegetables, and not all of his
neighbors are thrilled.
"I'd rather see green grass" than brown dirt patches, says 82-year-old
Florence Tatum, who lives in Mr. Nash's Boulder neighborhood, across the
street from a house with a freshly dug manure patch out front. "But those
days are slipping away."
Since 2006, Mr. Nash, 31, has uprooted his backyard and the front or back
yards of eight of his Boulder neighbors, turning them into minifarms
growing tomatoes, bok choy, garlic and beets. Between May and September,
he gives weekly bagfuls of fresh-picked vegetables and herbs to people
here who have bought "shares" of his farming operation. Neighbors who lend
their yards to the effort are paid in free produce and yard work.
A school-bus driver, Mr. Nash rises at 5 a.m. and, after returning from
his morning route, spends his days planting, watering and tending his yard
farms and the seedlings he stores in a greenhouse behind his house.
Farmers don't necessarily live in the country anymore. They might just be
your next-door neighbor, hoping to turn a dollar satisfying the blooming
demand for organic, locally grown foods.

Allergy drug Singulair causes suicidality
May 3, 2008
Kate and Dave Miller have been trying to raise awareness about potential
side effects of the drug since their 15-year-old son, Cody, killed himself
last August. The teen had taken the medication for less than three weeks
to treat seasonal allergies.
The drugmaker, Merck & Co., added "suicidality" to the list of Singulair's
side effects last year, and the FDA last month launched an investigation
into the drug.
Newly listed side effects include: psychiatric disorders, including
agitation, depression, irritability and suicidal thinking and behavior
(including suicide).

Climate change claims caribou calves
May 2, 2008 CBC News
Fewer caribou calves are being born and more of them are dying in West
Greenland as a result of a warming climate, says a U.S. biologist who
believes the mammal may serve as an indicator species for climate change.
Penn State biology professor Eric Post based his conclusions on data
collected since 1993 showing that the timing of peak food availability no
longer corresponds to the timing of caribou births. He said the number of
calves surviving into adulthood decreased by roughly 75 per cent.

Canada faces Kyoto probe over greenhouse gases
OSLO, May 7 (Reuters) - Canada will be probed on suspicion of violating
rules for registering greenhouse gases that are the mainstay of a U.N.-led
fight against global warming, official documents show.
Ottawa could be suspended from rights to trade carbon dioxide if found to
be in breach of the rules by the enforcement branch of the U.N.'s Kyoto
Protocol. Greece was suspended last month, the first nation to face such a
sanction under Kyoto.

"This is the latest humiliation for Canada on the world stage, said John
Bennett of ClimateforChange.ca. At a time when we should be combating
climate change and fighting for the environment, this government is
quarreling with the UN and fighting to protect the tar sands. Its a sober
reminder of how far we've fallen in the eyes of other nations. The world
expects better of Canada - and Canadians expect better of the federal
government.

Expert wonders why feds killed information registry
The Canadian Press, May 5, 2008
OTTAWA -- The Conservative government has killed a flawed but workable
information registry rather than open itself to real public scrutiny, says
an academic who was quoted glowingly Monday by Prime Minister Stephen
Harper.
The Conservative party line backfired when Alasdair Roberts -- "a leading
expert on access to information law,'' according to Treasury Board
President Vic Toews -- trashed their talking points moments after the
daily question period.
At issue is a 19-year-old registry known as CAIRS, for Co-ordination of
Access to Information Requests System.
Created in 1989 to allow central government oversight -- and control -- of
all access requests, the system has slowly evolved into a crucial
catalogue allowing a public signpost to millions of previously released
documents.
The Canadian Press revealed on the weekend that Treasury Board quietly
killed the registry last month.

Poll suggests clear majority of Canadians support carbon tax
THE CANADIAN PRESS, May 07, 2008 04:36
OTTAWA - A new poll suggests most Canadians support the idea of a carbon
tax - but an overwhelming majority favour the broader principle of using
the tax system to punish or reward environmental behaviour.
