Warrior/Healer/Activist Ann Phillips kicks off the TLC series
on Transformative Martial Arts on Wednesday June 25 at
her home dojo and wellness clinic location at St. Clair and
Yonge. (2pm). A rare public presentation by this engaging
Renaissance Woman, her topic sets the tone for the 5-week
series:
"Martial Arts as a Tool for Individual and Planetary Healing."
Ann is a natural health practitioner whose approach to
promoting health and vitality is a fusion of Oriental Healing
and Energy Arts with Western Science, African and
Indigenous Knowledge. Her Ph.D. focused on women's
and community health, with a specific emphasis on
empowerment of low-income women, and her long list of
qualifications includes training around the world in
acupuncture, reiki, and various indigenous healing arts.
Her martial training has been designed to complement her
healing, energy and social justice activities. They include
Goju Ryu Karate, Kobudo, Escrima, Iaido, Jodo, Tai chi,
Chi Kung, Bagua, Tae Kwon Do, Capoeira and Aikido. They
have allowed her to develop a deep experiential understanding
of chi, the vital energy, and its application to all areas of life.
A mix of theory and practice, her session will feature a range
of exercises and meditations suitable to any level of
experience. Loose clothing is recommended for those who
want to participate in the exercises.

Planet in Focus International Film Festival presents:
The Battle of Chernobyl
Friday, June 27, 6:45pm:
at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, 111 Queens Park
France, Documentary, 94 mins.
Russian with English Subtitles
On April 6, 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the city of Pripyat,
Ukraine exploded, melting down to emit more radiation than the two atomic
bombs dropped on Japan during World War II.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, top secret documents have
finally surfaced on the systematic cover-up by the Soviet government; they
admit the true severity of the Chernobyl disaster. Archived footage and
personal interviews by former government officials reveal how the disaster
was concealed from the world, and how thousands of men were sacrificed in
order to prevent the possibility of a secondary radioactive explosion that
would have poisoned Europe, rendering it uninhabitable.
