CITIZEN'S INCOME PUBLIC FORUM

DATE: August 14th, 7-9 p.m.
PLACE: Woodsworth College, 119 St. George Street, U of T, Room 123
INFO: hello at citizensincome.ca, www.citizensincome.ca, 416-760-6622

A forum with the public, the media, and federal political parties,
convened by Citizen's Income Toronto.

The public is invited to submit questions to CIT up to a week before the
event, and to attend. The topic is Citizen's Income, Basic Income, or
Guaranteed Annual Income, and the federal political parties, the news
media, and the public are invited to attend.

A Citizen's Income is defined as "a just income paid to everyone without
condition and as a right of citizenship." This idea has been around for a
very long time, under many different names; mincome, guaranteed annual
income, basic income, etc. In many countries, a strong movement to create
a citizen's income has developed. In a few countries, governments are
studying it and even implementing a limited form of it. Every few years,
it pops up in public discourse in Canada and disappears again.

Groups to promote CI have started in Quebec and BC. The simple aim of CIT
is to build a group in Toronto, and link it to other groups to form a
national movement for CI.

A Call to Action
Power Down to remember the Blackout
Thursday, August 14, 2008

Do you remember the great blackout of August 14th, 2003? In the midst of
the crisis, Ontarians watched the stars, held blackout parties to empty
their freezers, and helped those in need. As a province, Ontario
rediscovered the importance of conservation.

These are things worth celebrating.

The Conservation Council of Ontario, the Blackout Day Group, and many
others need your help to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the 2003
blackout by “Powering Down” for the day. You don’t have to go without
power, just aim to use at least 20% less power than on a normal day. Keep
the essential stuff running, and turn off the things you don’t need for
the day.

individuals: Power Down for the day and celebrate conservation
stores and restaurants: Power Down for the day and offer Blackout Day
specials
offices: Power Down and turn off unnecessary equipment
municipalities:  join the Mayor’s Blackout Challenge

Cycling Groups demand investigation of Toronto for violating provincial
law -- Bloor St. reconstruction
July 23, 2008

(TORONTO) A coalition of cycling groups filed a formal demand with
Ontario’s Environment Commissioner for an investigation of the City of
Toronto for violating the province’s Environmental Assessment Act. The
groups allege that in approving a major road reconstruction project along
the so-called Mink Mile on Bloor St. (between Avenue Rd. and Church St.)
the City failed to comply with its legal obligations.

Construction on the project --- a partnership between the City and the
Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area --- began on July 14, 2008 in an
area considered to be Canada’s premier shopping district. Bloor Street is
also the city’s premier cycling route (in numbers) but has one of the
highest cycling injury rates. The groups say that proper public
consultation would have highlighted Ontario’s planning regime, which
directs cities to provide for the safety of cyclists to help reduce
traffic pollution and congestion.
