Wine and Cheese
Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina, 4th floor
800+ books of Tooker's collection from the 1960's onwards are being made
available to the public. Topics include transportation, health, cities,
waste, food, nuclear, peace, nature, politics, fiction, kids, development,
energy, globalization, advocacy and much more.
Visit the library any time during office hours and sign out Tooker's
books. Read the classics by Jane Jacobs, Ivan Illich, Abby Hoffman, Henry
David Thoreau, Gandhi, E.F. Schumacher, and many more.
At the launch there will be a FREE book give-away of all the books that
didn't make it onto the library shelves, so bring an empty bag.

Citizens for a Safe Environment - Announcement and Invitation
The following two Fluoride Forums are free and open to the public. All
presentations will be followed by questions from the public. Refreshments
served.

WHEN: Monday, August 11, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: United Steelworkers Union Hall, 25 Cecil Street (1 block south of
College Street west and 3 blocks west of University Avenue)
Walk, bike, take the TTC to Queen?s Park Station or drive. Free parking
for first 50 cars.
WHAT and WHY:
Based on new studies that indicate that fluoride can damage the brain and
other tissues, a panel of international scientists, doctors and dentists
will explore the following questions:
Is it time to stop water fluoridation in Toronto?
Do the risks outweigh the benefits?
Are there safer ways to protect children's teeth?

FLUORIDE'S EFFECTS ON THE BRAIN
by Dr. Vyvyan Howard, MB CHB PhD FRCPath Professor of Bioimaging, School
of Biomedical Science, University of Ulster
President, International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE)
Dr. C. Vyvyan Howard is a medically-qualified pathologist interested in
infant and fetal toxicology and, more recently, in researching the
toxicological properties of nanoparticles.
The evening forum will conclude with short presentations from a panel
of distinguished international scientists and researchers including Dr.
A. K. Susheela and Dr. Jennifer Luke on FLUORIDE'S OTHER HEALTH IMPACTS.

An evening with Bob Lovelace
Wed. Aug. 13, 2008 - 7:00 p.m.

(direction by subway: go to St. George station, walk south, left on Harbord)
Meet Bob Lovelace, former Ardoch Algonquin First Nation chief and Queen's
University lecturer, who was sentenced to six months in jail for saying
'no' to uranium mining on indigenous lands. Lovelace made this stand in
defense of the Earth and Creation, which indiginous peoples regard as
sacred.
Popular support for this cause contributed to the decision by 22 Ontario
municipalities to vote against uranium mining and a promise by the Ontario
government to revise antiquated legislation which currently gives mining
companies 'free entry' to contested indigenous lands and private property.
At stake is indigenous sovereignty, protection of the boreal forests from
contamination by toxic mine tailings, and the right of indigenous
communities to say no development which affects them.
Mr. Lovelace will share his reflections on the events of the last year,
the meaning that the land has for indigenous peoples, and the challenges
that attend to the current age of mass industrial development and
destruction of the land.

The Real Dirt on Farmer John will turn every idea you ever had about what
it means to be an American farmer, or an American dreamer, on its head.
Meet Farmer John Peterson, the incredible human being whose inspirational
story of revolutionizing his family farm and redeeming his own life has
won accolades and awards at film festivals around the world.
Director Taggart Siegel of Collective Eye made the film in a most unusual
way - shooting farmer John Peterson over 25-years of their evolving
friendship, and using multiple media, from 8 mm home movies to modern
video - allowing him to capture his alternately humorous, heartbreaking
and
spirited life with raw drama and intimacy.
With the death of his father during the late 60s, a teenaged John takes over
the traditional family farm, slowly turning it into an experiment of art and
agriculture, making it a haven for hippies, radicals and artists. The Real
Dirt on Farmer John charts the end of this idealistic era as the farm debt
crisis of the 1980s brings about the tragic collapse of the farm.
As the intricate weave of rural America unravels, vicious local rumours turn
John into a scapegoat, condemning him as a Satan-worshipping drug-dealer.
Threatened with murder, his home burned to the ground, John forsakes his
farm and wanders through Mexico, where he is transformed by the
soulfulness and pageantry of this ancient land. Mysteriously, his quest
leads him back to his hostile homeland.
Defying all odds, he gradually transforms his land into a revolutionary
farming community, a cultural mecca, where people work and flourish
providing fresh vegetables and herbs to thousands of people every week.
