Justice Suspended - Terror, Power, and the Politics of Faith

The aim of this forum is to inform Canadians of what is happening in their
name, and to empower them to stand up, speak out, and be counted. Being
Canadian indeed means a great deal to us; it is about cherishing and
upholding the values that we all believe in, stand for, and keep close to
our hearts - the values of justice, freedom, peace, security,respect,
diversity, and unity.

Our country is internationally recognized for its efforts to fight
discrimination and advocate for human rights universally. We are a nation
governed by democratic principles and the rule of law. This is indeed the
true Canadian Spirit, which we feel the necessity to awake especially when
fellow Canadians are being denied those very rights and freedoms that we
stand-up for.

The topics to be discussed at this event are crucial in sharing public
discourse on issues of justice, freedom, torture, human rights,
citizenship, etc. and include:

* The current status of the US prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
* The Military Commission Process
* The rights of prisoners under the Geneva Convention
* Interrogation and abuse in light of the UN Convention against Torture
* The right of repatriation, reparation, and rehabilitation
* The International Convention against Child Soldiers

An Independent Mind

The film explores the state of freedom of expression around the world in
2008, the 60-year anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, which protects freedom of expression under Article 19.

"An Independent Mind" interviews people from diverse walks of life who
have faced oppression and censorship for expressing unpopular or radical
opinions. Some of the interviewees include The Moustache Brothers, a
comedy troupe in Burma; Tiken Jah Fakoly, a reggae star from Côte
d'Ivoire; Ali Dilem, an Algerian cartoonist; and David Irving, a British
writer and historian.

Following the film there will be a panel discussion on the limitations of
freedom of expression, featuring media defence lawyer Frank Addario,
Ryerson journalism professor John Miller, CBC journalist Carol Off, and
journalist/lecturer Mary Deanne Shears.

Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) is an association of more
than 300 journalists, editors, publishers, producers, students and others
who work to promote and defend free expression and press freedom in Canada
and around the world. CJFE has a history of work on cases pertaining to
media law and freedom of expression.

TOWN HALL REGARDING CUTS TO CULTURAL AND HERITAGE GRANTING PROGRAMS

Who should come? Everyone concerned about the Federal Government?s blatant
contempt for arts and culture.
Who will be speaking? Representatives from Government, visual arts, film,
video, performing arts
What will we be doing? Strategizing on how to get our voices heard in the
next election
Why is this important? Because the wave of cuts and policy changes are
radically changing Canadian society.

Since taking power in 2006, the Conservative Government has eliminated
over $34 Million from Cultural and Heritage Granting Programs. The
programs affected were designed to assist artists, arts institutions and
not for profit charitable organizations in the creation, development,
promotion and dissemination of Canadian art both nationally and
internationally.

The most recent cuts:
 - The PromArt Program, 4.7 million (administered by the Department of
Foreign Affairs)
 - Trade Routes, 9 million, Department of Canadian Heritage
 - Stabilization Projects and Capacity Building, of the Canadian Arts and
Heritage Sustainability Program
 - Canadian Independent Film and Video Fund, 1.5 million
 - National Training Program in the Film and Video Sector, 2.5 million
 - $300,000 to the Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada, for programs
archiving important film, television and musical recordings.

With the anticipation of more cuts to be announced next week, we are
inviting members of the arts and the broader community, MPs and the media
to attend a town hall meeting. This meeting is intended to discuss the
funding cuts, the ideological and inappropriate comments made by
government about the politics of recipients and to brainstorm a plan of

Car Free Days in Toronto - Sept. 22

To coincide with International Car Free Day on September 22, 2008, four
Toronto Communities will be hosting their own Car Free Day in their
neighbourhood. With the support of Sierra Club Ontario, Cedarvale Ave.,
Cody Ave., Delaware St. and Concord Ave. will be Car Free for a day. Kudos
to these community groups for taking alternative transportation and
emission reduction literally “to the streets”!

If your neighbourhood is interested in having its own Car Free Day (makes
for a fabulous block party!), Sierra Club Ontario can help you to organize
your event, fill out the necessary permits and arrange for barricades to
