"Even U.S. mayors and British energy consumers are now talking about
Canada's "dirty oil," because bitumen, no mater how you spin it, is a
corrosive, smog-making. water-fouling, bottom-of-the-barrel product. Make
no mistake about it: Canada now faces an intractable political emergency.
It can either slow down tar sands development to serve a planned national
transition to renewable energy sources, or it can rape the world's last
great oil field and put the nation on a road to hell."

Feds continue to block electric cars on Canadas roads
As greenhouse gases and fuel prices continue to rise, the federal
government is still blocking low-speed electric vehicles from the roads.
Transport Canada declared last winter that low-speed vehicles (LSVs) are
unsafe to run on public roads. Meanwhile, Canadian-made electric vehicles
have found a healthy market south of the border where 40 states allow the
Quebec-made ZENN and B.C. Dynasty electric cars on public roads at
restricted speeds.

Felicity Barringer, The New York Times: "California, known for its
far-ranging suburbs and jam-packed traffic, is close to adopting a law
intended to slow the increase in emissions of heat-trapping gases by
encouraging housing close to job sites, rail lines and bus stops to
shorten the time people spend in their cars."

Social costs of cars, planes, trains $40B a year: Transport Canada
A groundbreaking federal study has calculated the "social costs" of
operating cars, trucks, planes, trains and boats across Canada at up to
$40 billion a year.
The study for the first time attempts to put a national price tag on the
unwanted byproducts of transport, that is, accidents, pollution,
congestion, noise and greenhouse gases.

The Medicalisation of Everyday Life
As the pace of medical innovation slows to a crawl, how do drug companies
stay in profit? By discovering new illnesses to fit existing products.
But, says Ben Goldacre, in the second extract from his new book, for many
problems the cure will never be found in a pill.

List of drugs with suicide concerns
Associated Press
Aug. 31, 2008
A list of some prescription medications for which concerns have been
raised involving suicidal thoughts and actions:
- All antidepressants. Drugs such as Prozac, Paxil, Wellbutrin and Zoloft
carry required warnings that the medications can increase suicidal
thinking and behavior in some children, adolescents and young adults.
- Anticonvulsives. Drugs such as Depakote, Lyrica and Neurontin are used
to treat seizures and other conditions. A recent FDA analysis found a
small increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. An advisory panel
recommended against applying the agency's strongest warning to the drugs.
- Chantix. The FDA is investigating whether the smoking cessation drug
triggers psychiatric symptoms.
- Singulair. The FDA is investigating whether the drug for asthma and
allergies can prompt suicidal thoughts.
- Accutane. The acne drug carries a warning that it may cause suicidal
thoughts and behavior in rare cases.

Canada's Tar Sands Lobbyists Focus on Democrats
02 September 2008
Chris Arsenault, Inter Press Service
As the U.S. election campaign kicks into overdrive, Canadian politicians
and oil executives are stepping up lobbying efforts to make sure whoever
controls the White House keeps purchasing notoriously dirty oil from the
Alberta tar sands. <snip>
"The Canadian government is trying to deal through the back room rather
than dealing with the environmental impacts of the oil sands," Simon Dyer
told IPS. "Emissions from the oil sands are going to triple [by 2020] and
that's inconsistent with the world's desire to lessen climate change."
