RALLY FOR WAR RESISTERS

On September 23, the Harper government has ordered US war resister Jeremy
Hinzman to leave Canada with his family, or face deportation.  Jeremy was
the first US soldier to refuse to fight in Iraq and seek refuge.

Parliament and a majority of Canadians support Iraq war resisters being
allowed to stay in Canada.  On June 3rd, MPs voted 137 to 110 in support
of a motion calling on the federal government to cease all deportations of
US war resisters, and to implement a program to allow them to stay. 
Despite this, the minority Harper government is deporting war resisters to
the US, where they face jail time and a felony conviction for refusing to
fight in an illegal war.

It is time to mobilize to demand that the Conservative government
immediately cease these deportations.  Join thousands from coast to coast
to demand that the Harper government respect democracy and let war
resisters stay.

The Annette Street bike lane needs your help. A full kilometre of the bike
lane risks not being approved. Our councillor and City staff need to hear
from people what want the full bike lane - including the disputed section
between Jane and Windermere. The full bike lane will offer cyclists more
safety on this busy street. If you bike on Annette Street or would like to
start biking on this street if it was safer, now is the time to have your
say.

Please attend the public meeting on this issue to show your support for
the full bike lane on Annette Street and to let City staff and the
councillor know your views.

PAUL CROUTCH MEMORIAL

Paul Croutch, a homeless 59 year old psychiatric survivor, was beaten to
death by military reservists next to Moss Park Armoury on August 31, 2005.
The reservists also assaulted an under-housed woman who attempted to
intervene to defend Paul.

Paul’s death is remembered as a symbol of ongoing human rights violations
against homeless people, who continue to die at a horrifying rate in
Toronto and across the Canada.

At noon on September 15, at Moss Park, we will remember Paul and others
who have died as we continue to struggle for justice for all.

Those who know Paul and would like to speak are welcome.
