The World According to Monsanto

Monsanto is the world leader in genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as
well as one of the most controversial corporations in industrial
history. Based on a painstaking investigation, The World According to
Monsanto puts together the pieces of the company's history, calling on
hitherto unpublished documents and numerous first-hand accounts.
In the light of its troubling past, can we really believe these noble
intentions? Misleading reports, collusion, pressure tactics and attempts
at corruption: the history of Monsanto is filled with disturbing episodes.
Behind its clean, green image, Monsanto is tightening its grasp on the
world seed market, striving for market supremacy to the detriment of food
security and the global environment.
The screening will be followed by a policy discussion with the Canadian

The Canadian election is taking place in the context of a severe financial
crisis in the US, a Presidential election that seems to be breaking from
Bush's America, and multiple crises in neoliberalism. Yet, the Canadian
political right under the leadership of Stephen Harper's Conservative
government appears to be consolidating power; the centre-left remains
electorally divided between the Liberals, Greens and NDP, and limited in
its policy horizons; and the wider progressive and radical left barely
seems to have a foothold in either electoral or policy debates, which was
not the case even a decade or so ago.
This discussion brings together some of the most prominent and unique
voices on Canadian politics and policy to debate these issues in light of
theresults of the October 14 election.

Bixi, Montreal's new massive public bike sharing system, will be visiting
Toronto to show us a demo. They'll allow us to try out the system to get a
glimpse of what is possible in Toronto after we multiply it by 1000.
Bixi memberships cost $80 per year. A user can take a bike out from any of
the 300 stations throughout the core - a station is always only 200 metres
away. The first half hour of your travel is free with prices rising
quickly after that. Most people will only need the bike for a half hour at
most before locking it up at any available station. You can see more of

This is the inspiring and riveting documentary biography of Mestre Bimba,
one of the founding fathers of contemporary capoeira. Capoeira is the
colourful martial and musical art of Brazil, rooted in the survival and
resistance struggles of Afro-Brazilians. Bimba led a social and spiritual
renaissance of capoeira--"Capoeira Regional"--in the 1930s that would
have major influences in Brazil and throughout the world.
The film will be hosted by Lang Liu, chief instructor of Filhos de Bimba
(Toronto). Discussion of the film and the wide range of issues relating
to transformative martial arts will follow.
