We Are All In This Together
Defending The Public Interest During The Recession: A Community Forum
Tuesday April 28, 2009

3pm-5pm
Multi-Faith Centre, U of T

569 Spadina Ave., Toronto

As not-for-profit social agencies strain to meet increasing need
with less funding, there is growing concern that governments'
economic stimulus packages are doing more to serve the interests of
corporate CEOs than address immediate social needs. The desperate
struggles of those hardest hit by the recession are inspiring
increased activism around issues of poverty, labour, health, human
rights, housing, food security, and equity (among others), as people
attempt to redirect their governments' attention to serving the
public interest.

with panelists including:

Uzma Shakir...The Colour of Poverty
Gail Nyberg...The Daily Bread Food Bank
Peggy Nash...Good Jobs Coalition; C.A.W.

~Night at the Indies~ Toronto

What: ~Night at the Indies~ and Mayworks co-present Pride and Solidarity

When: Tuesday April 28, 7-10 pm

Where: Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, 12 Alexander Street

Admission: $5-$10 s/s

Pride and Solidarity is a jam-packed evening that will trace the
histories and current of queer political movements in Canada and the
United States, and the engagement of workers, artists and unions
fighting for social justice.

Opening the evening, Hannah in Bedlam, a monologue written and
performed by acclaimed Toronto artist christina starr.

Two documentary films by award-winning filmmaker Nancy Nicol will be
screened, which capture the victories and struggles for same-sex
relationship recognition and marriage in Canada and the United States.

Politics of the Heart (68min, 2005) is a moving portrait of lesbian
and gay families who profoundly re-shaped the cultural, political and
legal landscape of Quebec and Canada by fighting for recognition of
their relationships and their families.

One Summer in New Paltz
(54 min, 2008) is a cautionary tale of a young mayor of a small
village who decided to do the unthinkable, set against a backdrop of
the Bush administration’s policy of endless war and assault on civil
liberties.

A question and answer period will close the program, including Nancy
Nicol and Fred Hahn. Fred was elected Secretary Treasurer of CUPE
Ontario in 2006, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to
a full-time officer position in CUPE Ontario.

Co-presented with ~Night at the Indies~. Co-sponsored by CAW Queer
Caucus, CUPE Ontario Pink Triangle Committee, OPSEU Rainbow Alliance,
and Elementary Teachers of Toronto Political Action Committee.

Protest Local Hospital Cuts and Closures

Thousands of people from cities and towns across Ontario facing major
hospital cuts and closures will be joining in solidarity at a MASS
RALLY at Queen’s Park on Wednesday, April 29th, to demand that the
McGuinty government protect local hospital services. The rally has
been called by the Town of Fort Erie, working in alliance with
municipalities across Ontario. The Ontario Health Coalition and
local Health Coalitions across Ontario are supporting this important
endeavour.

Wednesday, April 29th --11:30 am

Queen’s Park, Toronto

Consistent and intentional underfunding of hospital global budgets by
the McGuinty government is forcing cuts to hospital beds and services
not seen since the unprecedented Harris cuts of the mid-‘90s. Across
the province, mass layoffs are being announced; services are being
privatized, cut and/or centralized in hospitals far from patients’
homes; emergency rooms are being closed; and small and rural
hospitals are under threat of closure. Unless the government
improves funding, more than 70% of Ontario's hospitals will be thrown
into deficit this fiscal year and more extreme cuts will likely
follow. Hospital cuts place an increased burden on remaining
hospitals and staff. For Ontario residents, this means longer waits,
worse overcrowding, traveling further, higher infection rates, paying
out of pocket, and lower levels of care.

Coalition at 416-230-6402.

MAY DAY!

No One Is Illegal!
May Day of Action
Rally and March
Sat. May 2, 1pm
Meet: Sherbourne and Carlton

On April 2nd and 3rd, over 100 temporary and undocumented workers were
attacked by armed border guards, dragged in to detention and are now
being
forcibly deported. On 2 May, thousands of us will say Enough!

Migrants, poor and working people; undocumented people and people of
colour live in constant crisis in Canada, attacked daily. A crisis has
always existed in Teesdale, in Regent Park, in farm fields, on factory
floors and in hotel service areas.

Corporate and political elites are using the current 'Economic
Crisis' as
an excuse to attack poor, working-class and racialized communities by
increasing immigration enforcement; stealing public funds; wrecking
social
services; taking away people's jobs rather than cutting profits and
targeting those they perceive as the weakest - indigenous people; the
homeless; refugee claimants; women in shelters; queer and trans
migrants,
caregivers; factory workers and temporary workers.

We say there are no illegal human beings, only unjust laws and
governments. No one, poor or undocumented, is illegal. The struggle of
workers - waged and unwaged, with or without immigration status – is
against powerful elites and systems of oppression. Citizenship, jobs
and
houses - granted to some and denied to others - are tools to divide us.

We will not be divided.

On May 2, join thousands of us as we take to the streets and demand
an end
to corporate and state attacks on our communities. We demand an end to
detentions and deportations. We demand access without fear to essential
services. We demand an end to security certificates and secret
trials. We
demand a full and inclusive regularization program. We demand justice,
dignity, and status for all!

We did not create this crisis, and we will not pay for it. On May 2nd,
create power. Resist.

The May 2nd rally and march will be preceded by a May Day Festival,
on May
1st at 6pm, at 25 Cecil Street.

More About The Cutting Veg
The Cutting Veg (TCV) is a community-health promotion enterprise
rooted in organic farming. TCV runs 4 programs aimed at promoting
personal, social, environmental, and economic health. TCV grows a
variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs, which are sold at farmers
markets, and through a Community Supported Agriculture box program.

In addition to produce sales, TCV runs the “Global Garlic Project.”
Specifically, we grow over a dozen varieties of garlic from around
the world, including Tibetan, Persian, Italian, Russian, Korean, and
Israeli. TCV also provides Food Coaching Services, which offers
garden & composting project support, educational workshops & urban
farming internships, dietary & meal planning support, and food-career
counselling.

Finally, TCV offers one-on-one “Wellness Counselling” for individuals
who want to take steps forward with their health and happiness.
Collectively, these programs are helping TCV towards the achievement
of its quadruple bottom line: Personal health, Social health,
Environmental health, and Economic health. TCV is owned and managed
by Daniel Hoffmann.

Daniel is a Social Worker (BSW), Counsellor, and has been farming in
B.C. and Ontario since 2000. For more information about The Cutting
