What's this all about?
On July 22nd, the Toronto ad hoc coalition against open pit mining
plans to
holdan awareness-raising event along Bay Street. We will be
demonstrating our
support of communities from Turtle Island, Abya Yala, Africa, Asia and
Oceana resisting proposed and ongoing mining operations in which
Canadian
companies with listings on the TSX are implicated in environmental
devastation
and human rights abuses. The initial call for global solidarity was
sent out by
the Mexican communities from Cerro de San Pedro in San Luàs de
Potosà . In
Toronto, will also be asking Members of Parliament to support
legislation that
calls forCanadian mining corporations to uphold internationally
recognized
environmental and human rights standards.

:::::

What is open pit mining?
Minerals are extracted from near the surface of the earth, requiring
a great
deal of earth removal that later can clog and severely contaminate
water.
Due to the destructive nature of this type of mining, it is sometimes
referred
to as mountain-top removal. Around the world, open-pit mining is often
conducted without the consent of the communities that are affected
and/or
displaced.

No Visa? No Rights?!

DON’T CLOSE THE BORDER ON REFUGEES!

Community Rally & March

Thursday, July 23rd 1:00pm

Meet at the corner of Davenport & Perth

(to get there by transit, take the 168 Symington bus from Dundas West
station)

Come raise your voice against the Canadian government’s recent
decision to impose visa requirements on Mexico and the Czech Republic.

This decision, made by Immigration Minister Jason Kenny, closes the
door on Mexican and Czech Roma asylum-seekers fleeing racism,
violence and persecution back home. It also prevents visitors from
coming to Canada for tourism or to reunite with their families.

Roma people in the Czech Republic have been facing escalating
violence from neo-Nazi groups, and the police and legal system have
not provided adequate protection. Toronto immigration lawyer Max
Berger, who is acting for about 400 Roma applicants, said that the
IRB has made a decision in just under 100 cases and accepted 85 per
cent, an extraordinarily high rate. The general acceptance rate is
about 40 per cent.

In recent months, Canada’s own Department of Foreign Affairs and
International Trade has issued warnings about the rising violence in
Mexico. Over 6,000 Mexicans have been killed in drug-related
violence in 2008 alone, and whole villages have been forced to
evacuate to escape gun battles.

Let’s learn from history - don’t let the Canadian borders be shut on
refugees and immigrants! Join your neighbours in defense of our
rights! There will be speakers at the rally from the Roma Community
Centre, the FCJ Refugee Centre, No One Is Illegal and others.

Organized by the Bread and Bricks Davenport-West Social Justice Group.

Briefing and strategy session about Bill C-300 on Corporate
Accountability

for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries

in relation to the Toronto Centre federal riding of Bob Rae.

On Thursday, July 23rd, from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.

in the KAIROS boardroom, 310 Dupont Street, Suite 200, is 100 meters
west of the Dupont subway stop on the north side of the street.

Rae has blocked this private members bill in committee. There will
be a concerted effort by activists in the Toronto Centre riding to
lobby him to change his perspective and position over this summer.
When Parliament resumes in the fall, the bill will be considered
again in detail, and if accepted by the majority of the committee's
members, it will return to the House of Commons for the third and
final reading. If you are an activist from the Toronto Centre riding
and can come on you lunch hour, or know of such an activist and can
get this message to her or him to be at this meeting, that will be a
real contribution.

Please join us.
