http://www.trca.on.ca/news-media/news/releases/51415

On Saturday, September 19th, First Nations leaders, elected
officials, local advocacy groups and residents will join together in
a grand celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Humber River's
designation as a Canadian Heritage River. The Humber River is the
only Canadian Heritage River of the nine watersheds in the Greater
Toronto Area. It is also the only Canadian Heritage River that is
part of a select group of 41 historically important and specifically
protected watercourses in the country, that has a subway stop along
its path and that flows through Canada's most densely populated area
of more than three million people. Its rich cultural history includes
First Nations people, as well as key historical figures such as
Brûlé, Champlain, LaSalle, Rousseaux, Quetton St-George and more.

This celebration will focus on urban watershed issues, natural
history, and future directions for the Humber in the city, as well as
honouring those people - past, present and future - who work to
protect and enhance the Humber's natural and human heritage as well
as recreational resources.

Saturday, September 19

8:30-10:30 a.m.: Historic Bike tour of Toronto's old French Forts and
Humber River Run to arrive at Étienne Brulé Park, birds of prey
exhibit, reptile display, mock archaeology dig and stewardship

Flashmob for the Climate

I'm organizing a flashmob event in Toronto and want to invite you to
join in our action (demanding a strong climate change agreement).
It’s one of hundreds of rallies taking place on Mon. September 21st
all across the world, organized through 350.org and AVAAZ.

Our flashmob event is organized through a campaign I am involved in -
C−Day Fill the Hill, Canada's largest citizen' gathering on climate
change, taking place Oct 24 on Parliament Hill (www.climateday.ca).

On Sept 21, we will be setting our cell phone alarms to go off at
12:18pm (signifying Dec 18 climate talks), and video taping the event
for world leaders at the UN to see. Join me at noon at Yonge & Dundas
Square on Monday, Sept 21. Here's the URL to RSVP:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/sept21_rsvp/?id=133818&cts=BbM9qs9

Hope to see you there! Please forward this to your friends as well!

The plans for September 21 events are thrilling in their variety: a
gathering in Ethiopia will beat drums to sound the alarm. Monks will
chant prayers. And everywhere, from Berlin to Buenos Aires, Avaaz
members will gather in peaceful, spontaneous "flash mobs" in public
places to sound the alarms on their mobile phones, flood their
governments with phone calls urging climate action, and make a
tremendous noise. The images, sounds, and videos will be stitched
together overnight for presentation to world leaders at the United
Nations the next day!

Best,
  Cheryl McNamara

FORUM

Mon. Sept. 21st
6:30 pm at Ryerson University’s Rogers Communications Centre (Church

Who is going to fix EI (employment insurance)? As election fever

dealt with the nagging issue of thousands of laid-off workers who
can’t get EI benefits.

Come here author and activist Judy Rebbick join with voices from the
trenches here and from the powerful unemployed movement in Quebec.
Help turn up the heat on federal politicians about this crucial issue.

THE EMERGENCY MONOLOGUES
an evening for War Resisters Support Campaign

Tuesday, September 22nd at 8 p.m.
Doors open at 7 p.m.
The Steelworkers Union Hall
25 Cecil Street (College and Spadina)
Admission: $20 Students: $10.00

From the FRINGE FESTIVAL to the WAR RESISTERS SUPPORT CAMPAIGN

Tales of the bizarre, ridiculous and irksome side of being a
paramedic in an unidentified urban city

“ Phillips neatly mixes humour and personal commentary with some
dead-serious topics. He’s a charming storyteller and knows how to
improvise if the occasion arises, though the material would probably
work better over a few shared drinks than in the theatre.” -Jon
Kaplan (NOW Magazine)

“If you've ever heard a siren in the night and wondered where it was
going, The Emergency Monologues is your answer... Fascinating,
gruesome, and laugh-out-loud
funny.” -Chris Earle (Second City)

A Bryant Competition

Hello everyone I am running a competition. I want to come up with a
definition of what "Pulling a Bryant," is. Please pass the word to
all of the amazing talented people you all know and ask them what
they think "pulling a bryant," should be. This of course is just a
example of what the term could sound like. It could be "Pulling a
Bryant", "Don't get all Bryant on Me", basically to be used as an
adjective, to be "Bryant like." I want to do this is to counteract
the crap Navigator, is pulling on the real victim of this tragedy,
Darcy Allan Sheppard. For those who do not know, Navigator is the
Public Relations firm that Micheal Bryant has hired to make him look
good and to make his victim look bad. So please spread the word to
friends, twitterers, blogs, message boards and anyone else you can
think of. Lets get some good ideas going around and then we can vote
on the best one. Won't you help me, help the world put a name to the
despicable act that Micheal Bryant preformed on September 1st 2009?
Please send all suggestions to pullabryant at gmail.com Please have
them entered by September 21st. The winner will be announced at the
fund raiser for Darcey Allen Sheppard @ Sneaky Dee's on Saturday
September 26th. Oh yes and there will be a prize =)

Thank you.

Tues. Sept. 22
7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Koffler Auditorium, Rm. 108
569 Spadina Ave., just north of College

First Nations peoples in Canada and Palestinians are facing similar
challenges and systematic discrimination in obtaining their basic
water needs. Join us for an evening of film screening and discussion
on the challenges to obtain equity and justice in access to water, on
how different communities are mobilising to obtain this basic right,
and on how we can develop effective solidarity for these causes.

Susan Koppelman is an active member of LifeSource, a Palestinian-led
collective organizing to build a popular movement for Palestinian
water justice. Â She is based in Ramallah. She will be showing "Gaza
is floating", a short film about how the Israeli siege is leading to
a sanitation disaster in Gaza, causing environmental catastrophe and
human tragedy.

Tyendinaga Mohawk Shawn Brant has been repeatedly imprisoned for his
stand against colonial policies and unjust treatment of First Nations
peoples in Canada. He is currently involved in a long-standing battle
to bring clean water to his community, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory,
which is one of the 85 First Nations communities that do not have
access to this basic right. Shawn lives on the Territory with his
family.

This event is part of Environment Week (www.earthcycle.ca) at the
University of Toronto, organized by Bike Chain, GSU Social Justice

HUMAN TRAIN

Sat. Sept. 26

March to send a message to Premier McGuinty:

CLEAN ELECTRIC TRAINS NOW, NOT 450 DIRTY DIESELS!

On Saturday, September 26th, the HUMAN TRAIN will roll through
communities in the west end along the Union Station to Georgetown
tracks to send a message to Premier McGuinty:

NO DIRTY DIESEL TRAINS! GO ELECTRIC NOW!

Right now, the most critical need is to build awareness of the event.

That’s happening as you read. Media is showing interest. And this
past Friday night, volunteers from Weston to Liberty Village lined up
to pick up 6,000 flyers, 500 posters, and about 2,000 drop cards for
distribution in carefully mapped areas along the rail corridor.
Thanks to everyone who came out!

To ensure that as many people as possible hear about the HUMAN TRAIN,
we have included the flyer and FAQ as an attachment to make it easy
to send to your contacts. Along with a poster, the flyer and FAQs are
also available on our website. Print some of each and distribute them
in your neighbourhood, at your school, wherever you live, work, or
play. Put posters on your local hydro poles. Spread the word. THE
HUMAN TRAIN IS COMING!

If you would prefer to pick up a stack of printed flyers or posters
to distribute, please contact: nodiesels at yahoo.com.

Join the walk at your closest “whistle stop” (see attached files
or www.cleantrain.ca for details), or join a core group walking the
whole route of the HUMAN TRAIN. If you would like to walk all the way
from Weston to Queen West, or if you’re able to volunteer, please
email info at cleantrain.ca and we’ll be in touch with you.

Everyone from every neighbourhood is urged to come to SORAUREN PARK
for the main event at 1:00 pm. We will all gather together in the
largest park beside the railway tracks to welcome the HUMAN TRAIN and
to demonstrate the strength of our demand that Metrolinx drop its
diesel agenda and move immediately to the use of electric trains.

In Sorauren Park we will refuel the HUMAN TRAIN with beautiful music
and inspiring words from representatives from every community along
the tracks. Finally the HUMAN TRAIN, swelled with the addition of the
crowd gathered in Sorauren Park, will march through the streets to
Queen West.

JOIN YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS ON THE HUMAN TRAIN!

Drying up Palestine on Wed., September 30, 2009 - Revue Cinema, 7:00 pm.

Rima Essa / Peter Snowdon | 2007 | 28 min | Documentary | Palestine
(see trailer)

The three million Palestinians living in the West Bank only have
access to 15% of the water in the aquifers beneath their territory.
And of that, they have to buy half from Mekerot, the Israeli national
water company. The remaining 85% goes to keep six million Israelis in
the comfort they are accustomed to. The result is one of the least
known, and most devastating dimensions of the last four decades of
military occupation. The consequences – underdevelopment, health,
hygiene, and daily humiliation – are graphically illustrated in this
documentary. Made for the Ramallah-based NGO House of Water and
Environment, Drying up Palestine is composed of first-person
testimony, where ordinary people describe and demonstrate the
inconvenience and indignity which Israel's water control inflicts
upon them. (source: Al-Ahram Weekly, 10-16 April 2008)

The film will also be screened with About the Sea a film where young
men and women lament the sea they can no longer reach; and By Land or
by Water: Gaza Under Siege that describes Israel’s blockade of the
import of fuel and materials needed to operate water and sanitation
systems following the large-scale destruction of Gaza from Operation
Cast Lead.

A panel discussion on environmental issues in Palestine will follow
the screenings.

Advance tickets can be purchased online or at the Toronto Women’s
