U.S. headed for massive decline in carbon emissions
Emissions Drop 9 Percent in Last Two Years
By Lester R. Brown
For years now, many members of Congress have insisted that cutting
carbon emissions was difficult, if not impossible. It is not. During
the two years since 2007, carbon emissions have dropped 9 percent.
While part of this drop is from the recession, part of it is also
from efficiency gains and from replacing coal with natural gas, wind,
solar, and geothermal energy.
The U.S. has ended a century of rising carbon emissions and has now
entered a new energy era, one of declining emissions. Peak carbon is
now history. What had appeared to be hopelessly difficult is
happening at amazing speed.

Cycling plan to blame drivers for all crashes
Ministers are considering a far-reaching change in the law in a bid
to promote greener transport
UK MINISTERS are considering making motorists legally responsible for
accidents involving cyclists or pedestrians, even if they are not at
fault.
Government advisers are pushing for changes in the civil law that
will make the most powerful vehicle involved in a collision
automatically liable for insurance and compensation purposes.
Other proposals to promote greener — and healthier — transport
include the imposition of blanket 20mph zones on residential streets.
Similar policies — which would not extend to criminal law — have
already been adopted by Germany and Holland, where transport
campaigners say they have had a significant influence in changing
attitudes towards cycling.

Canadian position prompted walk-out at climate talks
The government's push to abandon much of the Kyoto protocol prompted
dozens of developing countries to walk out on Canada's address during
recent climate talks in Thailand, The Canadian Press has learned.
The mass walkout came after the Canadian delegation suggested
replacing the Kyoto Protocol with an entirely new global-warming pact.

Traffic Noise Kills
Between 200 and 500 people in Denmark die every year because of the
noise generated by traffic.
A recent Swedish study of 30,000 people in the province of Skåne has
confirmed what many other studies have suggested. That the noise
generated by traffic causes higher blood pressure and increases the
risk of heart disease, strokes and blood clots.

Anti-depressants in pregnancy: Is there evidence of benefit?
WEBINAR - Thursday Oct. 29, 2009 from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. EDT
Canadian Women's Health Network presents Dr. Barbara Mintzes,
Assistant Professor, UBC Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics,
UBC Centre for Health Services & Policy Research, and Steering
Committee member, Women and Health Protection
Antidepressants are increasingly being used to treat depression in
pregnancy in Canada despite their lack of approval for this use by
Health Canada or the US FDA. Recent scientific and public attention
has focused on an increased risk for infants, and this has led to
conflicting advice about the use of SSRI/SNRI antidepressants (such
as Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, or other related drugs) during pregnancy.
Some suggest avoiding all exposures, while others recommend use in
order to avoid harm to mothers and infants from untreated depression.
Mintzes will present what she and colleagues found in a systematic
evaluation of all available studies comparing women with depression
who did or did not take antidepressants during pregnancy. Their goal
was to find an answer to the controversial and urgent clinical
question: do pregnant women benefit from taking antidepressants?
This research and this webinar are funded by Health Canada’s
Women’s Health Contribution Program.
The webinar is free of charge and open to the public.
You will need a computer with a high speed internet connection and
speakers (or a headset).
Please email info at cwhn.ca for registration information.
If you would like to suggest a question for Dr. Mintzes, please email
it along with your registration request.
