TAR SANDS ON TRIAL
Beaver Lake Cree vs. the Crown

Environmental Defence is pleased to host the Beaver Lake Cree First Nation
from Lac La Biche in northern Alberta, and Jack Woodward, one of Canada's
pre-eminent Aboriginal Law practitioners.
These special guests will discuss a groundbreaking legal action filed to
protect the Beaver Lake Cree Nation's way of life against tar sands
developments and other industrial activity.
The event will also feature a brief video presentation and insight into
Environmental Defence's work on the issue of tar sands and climate change.
The evening will conclude with a reception that provides an opportunity to
talk to the speakers in person.
The event is free. Seating is limited, so come early!

salmon, despite its threat to natural fish populations. Corporations
deceive the public, while trying to patent and control the food supply. By

PATIENT BUILT WALL TOUR
You and anyone you wish to bring along are welcome to attend a historical
tour of the 19th century patient built asylum boundary walls located at
the present-day Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), 1001 Queen
Street West, Toronto.
The purpose of this tour is to remember the contributions of the women and
men who lived, worked, and died in the Toronto Asylum for the Insane, as
is represented by the boundary walls that they built which stand as an
enduring testament to their abilities, and to use the past to challenge
discrimination experienced today by people who have a psychiatric history.
This tour is wheelchair accessible.
Sunday, November 1 from 1 to 3 PM.
CAMH is located at 1001 Queen Street West which is at the intersection of
Queen and Ossington. Meet at 1 PM just outside the FRONT DOORS. If you
arrive late and the tour has already started, go along the length of the
wall (east-south-west) and look for the tour as it proceeds along the
boundary wall.
Please note: since the tour is on the grounds of a mental health facility,
in order to respect people's privacy, we will not be going into the
buildings. The wall tour is entirely outside so please dress
appropriately.

Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance Course
Toronto's first approved (by the Bicycle Trade Association of Canada)
Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance Course is open for fall and winter
registrations. In this 8 week course students will gain proficiency in all
areas of bicycle mechanics needed to perform as a novice in a commercial
bicycle shop. Students will learn to assemble new bikes, and to
recondition old ones. There is extensive reading required. Mechanical
theory is covered in handouts from the Barnett Bicycle Manual. The last
week of the course includes a week's placement in a commercial bicycle
shop.
Course dates:
BAM Course 4 November 2 to December 18, 2009. Placements: December 21-23
and 28-30.
BAM Course 5 January 4 to February 19, 2010. Placements: February 22 to
26 or 27, 2010
BAM Course 6 March 1 to April 16, 2010. Placements April 19 to 23 or 24.
