Free Education Week
U of T
Nov. 16 - 20
Poverty, homelessness, unemployment; these are some of the ills that
plague our society. What can we do to solve these problems? Education is a
fundamental means of alleviating these problems. To ensure that our
society has an educated population, and that all people have an equal
opportunity to it, education must be accessible to everyone. Free
postsecondary education will ensure that everyone has fair opportunities
and options.

A Woman Among Warlords: "Afghan MP Speaks Out Against War"
A Lecture by Malalai Joya
Wednesday, November 18 at 7:00 - 9:00pm
Trinity-St. Paul's Centre
Malalai Joya has her risked her life to speak out about the violence and
poverty brought on by occupation and corruption in Afghanistan. On
November 18, Joya will speak in Toronto about why we must end the war
and let the Afghan people decide their own future.
Her new book, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an
Afghan Who Dared to Speak Out, is the account of her fight to liberate
Afghanistan after 30 years of war.
Joya has been a thorn in the side of the NATO-supported government by
being an outspoken critic of the human rights abuses of the warlords
who dominate the parliament of Afghanistan.
She has been threatened and attacked for her stance. In 2006, President
Hamid Karzai suspended her from parliament and cut her security
funding, proving that women's rights are not a concern for his
government.
Her intimate understanding of the situation of women in Afghanistan
exposes the lie that the West is in Afghanistan to protect women's
rights.

CLIMATE JUSTICE NOW
THURS, NOV. 19, 7:00 pm
William Doo Auditorium, New College, University of Toronto, 45 Willcocks
Street
Speakers, film screening, communal art, discussion
FREE Event. FOOD provided (bring your own dishes). ACCESSIBLE space.
In a few weeks, international negotiations on climate change will begin in
Copenhagen, Denmark. An international treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol
is being hammered out by leaders and negotiators from both the Global
South and Global North. No treaty without justice will do.
Neither the causes nor the effects of climate change are distributed
fairly. Small Island Developing States, coastal states, marginalized
populations in countries across the world, are facing serious consequences
of a world too-dependent on fossil fuels. Ensuring the survival of all
nations must be prioritized, no matter what agreement comes out of
Copenhagen. Ensuring a future means taking action - something that Canada
is sorely lacking. Canada will go to Copenhagen with no domestic plan of
action. To date, Canada has performed badly on the international stage,
obstructing the negotiations. We demand action!
Come, hear, watch, speak, engage, make art, take action.
Presented by the Caribbean Studies Students Union (CARSSU). Supported by
UTERN, among other organizations. Speakers include No One Is Illegal
Toronto.

Thursday November 19th, 6:00 pm: Forum on the Canadian Department of Peace
Initiative
The Transformative Learning Centre at OISE (UofT), as part of Canada's
World March Days, presents:
Rob Acheson speaking on the initiative for a Canadian Department for Peace.
Given the escalation of violent conflict, the increased threat of nuclear
annihilation and lawlessness across our world today, there has never been
greater urgency or a better window of opportunity to promote this
tremendous initiative in Canada. Such a Department would develop a
coordinated and coherent paradigm for a sustainable peace across all
government departments. The Minister would advance an agenda for a new
architecture of peace by supporting and establishing activities that
promote a culture of peace and assertive nonviolence in Canada and the
world.

Come and hear Brewster Kneen, the Ottawa based author of books on food and
agriculture, leading demographer Susan McDaniel, Director of the Prentice
Institute for Global Population and Economy, University of Lethbridge,
Alberta, and Robert Hoffman, of WhatIf?Technologies in Ottawa, who will

population scenarios. Moderator Mustafa Koç, Ryerson University.
All are welcome, students and teachers, politicians, reporters, and other

On Sunday, Nov. 22nd, Maryam Adrangi and Kimia Ghomeshi, members of the
Canadian Youth Delegation (CYD) to Copenhagen will be holding a fundraiser
to help them get to the UN Climate Change Negotiations this December. The
night will be filled with live music, spoken word, photo auction, and a
presentation by CYD members. There will also be an open mic, where we
welcome all organizations and individuals to speak about what they are
planning with regards to climate change and COP15, and/or building a new
green economy.
The CYD will also be raising funds to send youth delegates from Latin
America to the conference. It is communities from the global south which
are least represented on the climate policy front, yet it is also them
that are hardest hit by the impacts of climate change.
Where: Tequila Bookworm (upstairs), 512 Queen Street West (At Portland)
When: Sunday, November 22nd 7pm-11pm
What to bring:
1. A donation of $10-20
2. Any literature your organization has published on climate-related issues
3. Bring friends who are passionate and/or what to learn about climate
justice, the climate youth movement and the UN climate talks.
This is a great opportunity to connect with the Canadian Youth Delegation
going to Copenhagen as well as the Home Team who will be mobilizing for
climate action on the ground! We look forward to seeing you on this
fun-filled evening.
Thank you for your support!
