G8/G20 Day of Action Planning Meeting

Tuesday December 8th, 6:30 pm
Ryerson University, 285 Victoria Street, Victoria building 206, between
Gould and Dundas, on the east side of the street.

The G8 and G20 are coming!

On June 25-27th, 2010 the leaders of the eight most powerful countries in
the world (the G8) will be meeting in Huntsville Ontario to make decisions
that will affect all of us. They’ll be discussing how to manage the
economy, and the environment. That same week, they will join with other
leaders in the G20 meetings that appear to be headed for Toronto. They’ll
be having discussions about the forces that affect our lives – jobs,
immigration, security, poverty, health, land, dignity and education.

These leaders do not represent us. Nor do we expect that they make the
decisions that we need for a more just, more sustainable world. We need
something better.

During the summit, we’re calling for actions to confront and to disrupt
the illusion of polite agreements and photo opportunities that do little
to stem the climate crisis and increasing poverty and repression. We’re
calling for our communities to come together in Toronto to express our
visions for the worlds we want.

Wednesday, December 9, 7:15 pm
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto (one block south of College
Street, half way between Spadina and St George.)

Benamar Benatta was the subject of Canada's first post-9/11 rendition to
torture when he was illegally handed over to U.S. authorities with the
false, dangerously inflammatory description that he was connected with the
events of the previous day. He spent the next five years detained under
conditions that the United Nations concluded constituted torture.

Marina Nemat is a renowned author whose memoir, Prisoner of Tehran, is a
widely acclaimed account of her years spent, from the age of 16, as a
prisoner arrested on false charges by Iranian Revolutionary Guards and
tortured in Tehran's notorious Evin prison.

Nicole Chrolavicius is a human rights lawyer who represents Mr. Benatta.

Presented by Amnesty International, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Stop
Canadian Involvement in Torture, and Toronto Action for Social Change;

PLANET FIRST - PEOPLE FIRST!
Seal the deal at Copenhagen
INDOOR RALLY

presented by TORONTO CLIMATE CAMPAIGN and STUDENTS AGAINST
CLIMATE CHANGE

Join us for the live feed from Copenhagen, speakers, music, video and more...

Saturday, December 12, 3:00pm
Earth Sciences Auditorium
University of Toronto
33 Willcocks Street

The Copenhagen Climate Talks are the world's last chance to secure an
emissions reductions agreement that will replace the Kyoto Protocol before
it expires. There is a growing consensus among scientists that we have as
little as ten years to stop and reverse the global growth in greenhouse
gas emissions before 'runaway' climate change becomes uncontrollable. That
means the international talks being held in Copenhagen in December 2009
could be our last chance to avert a global catastrophe of unimaginable
proportions—perhaps the most important international meeting ever held. We
feel therefore that there is an overwhelming need to demonstrate a global
will for urgent and effective action at this time.

CALL TO ACTION:

• We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that is
needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilization of global climate, so
that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger
emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in
minimizing dangerous climate change. In Canada, the Harper government has
failed to act on global warming and has blocked progress at previous
climate meetings. The Canadian Government must take a stand against global
warming at home and abroad.

• We demand that the long-industrialized countries that have emitted most
greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere take responsibility for
climate change mitigation by immediately reducing their own emissions as
well as investing in a clean energy revolution in the developing world.

• We demand that the government increase support for renewable energy,
energy efficiency and good green jobs.

• Developed countries must take their fair share of the responsibility to
pay for the adaptive measures that have to be taken, especially by
low-emitting countries with limited economic resources. Climate change
will hit the poorest first and hardest. All who have the economic means to
act, must therefore urgently and decisively do so.

• Sign and promote the KYOTOplus petition (www.kyotoplus.ca) and join the
campaign to ensure the Kyoto Protocol is strengthened and extended at the
U.N. Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Candlelight Vigil
Sponsored by Toronto for Climate Action

Sat. Dec. 12, 7 p.m.
Queen’s Park

During the Copenhagen (COP15) Climate talks, join thousands of
Torontonians & vigils around the world to urge our leader to take BOLD
ACTION against climate change!

As a developed country, Canada is NOT doing its part to reduce GHG
emissions. Canada has become one of the world's top ten producers of
greenhouse gases.

Canadians want a Leader that will bring us to a new Green Economy; a
leader that sets 'ambitious' targets, not 'modest' ones.

LET US ACT AS ONE.

TTC Fare Hike? Hell NO!

Make Transit Affordable!

Public Action Against the Transit Fare Hikes

Saturday, December 12th, 1pm
Toronto City Hall (Queen and Bay)

Transit is a necessity and it is basic right. Not only should this fare
hike not go through, but transit should be federally funded and affordable
for everyone.

Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP)
ocap at tao.ca / 416-925-6939, www.ocap.ca

----------------------
----------------------

Do you want Toronto to have a great transit system?

TTC Riders is a new organization created to give a voice to the interests
and concerns of hundreds of thousands of Torontonians who use public
transit. We seek to ensure that our pubic transit provides good,
dependable service and is accessible and affordable for everyone in our
communities.

Drivers have the Canadian Automobile Association, homeowners have
organizations in many parts of the city, and even cyclists have formed an
effective lobby group. Transit riders also deserve to be well represented
when decisions are being made about fares, service delivery, or transit
priorities.

UNFAIR FARE HIKES!

On November 17th, the Toronto Transit Commission voted for an 11% increase
in fares, tokens, and the Metropass. That means fares and tokens will go
up by 25 cents, and the Metropass by $12 starting in January. Would anyone
at City Hall recommend an 11% increase on property tax in one year? Never!

No other major transit system in North America expects its riders to pay
for over 70% of the system's cost.

We are calling on the TTC, the City and the Provincial Government to
commit to fair funding for the transit system Torontonians need. You can
send a message to the TTC, the Premier, and the Mayor's office right now
-- by clicking here at http://www.ttcriders.ca

Or you can get involved, and join ttcriders.ca as it starts to build an
organization to represent transit riders, advocate for better service, and
work for a greener future for greater Toronto.
