The Toronto Women's Bookstore is in crisis and we need your help!

Independent businesses and bookstores have been closing their doors
this year, and after 36 years it is possible that we will have to do
the same if we are not able to raise enough money to survive. TWB is
one of the only remaining non-profit feminist bookstores in North
America, but despite all of the events, courses, workshops, community
resources and additional services we offer, the fact that we are a
store means that we do not receive any outside funding and rely
entirely on sales and the support of our customers to stay in business.
In the past, when feminist bookstores were closing down all across
North America, the support of the community is what kept TWB alive.
You are the reason that we are still here today, and we believe that
with your help we can once again work together to save this
organization where so many of us as readers, writers, feminists,
artists, and activists have found a home.

Transforming Enemy Images

Suggested $25 (with a pay what you can option)
LOCATION: contact Henry for location
Information / registration: Henry Wai 416-913-8861 wai_renooy at sympatico.ca

When we demonize our opponents and no longer see them as humans who
also matter, the risk increases that we will seek to dismiss or
dominate them. Transforming enemy images frees up the energy tied up
in that so that we can shift our focus to creating inclusive
strategies which appeal to both sides. Learn and practice a practical
way to translate limiting labels and interpretations about our
opponents into a hopeful understanding.

Vigil for Community leaders killed due to Canadian Mining Interests

Tues. March 9th2010 @ 4:30 PM
Metro Toronto Convention Centre, south building, 222 Bremner Blvd
(note: not on Front Street)

We invite you to join us in commemorating the lives of community
leaders throughout the world who have losttheir lives due to the
activities of Canadian mining companies abroad. We will gather outside
of the PDAC’smining investment show. PDAC is an organization made up
of more than 7000 mining and explorationcompanies. Among them, are
many mining companies infamously known for their human rights
violations athome and abroad. These include companies such as Hudbay
Minerals Inc., Gold Corp
Inc, Barrick Gold, Pacific Rim, among many others. These companies
have consistently shown that they are not serious about respecting the
human rights and self determination of local communities.

We stand in solidarity with local communities who demand a right to
alternative forms of development, health and self-determination. We
demand environmental justice in the extractive industries.

No Climate Justice Without Gender Justice: Understanding the Gendered
Effects of Climate Change

Wednesday, March 10, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Lash Miller, Room 159, 80 St. George Street, Toronto.
Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=368134835545&ref=ts

No Climate Justice Without Gender Justice: Understanding the Gendered
Effects of Climate Change is a conference to be held by the Women and
Gender Studies Student Union (WGSSU) on March 10, 2010. This event is
intended to educate and raise awareness about the gendered effects of
climate change and how women are disproportionately affected by
climate change. This conference will promote dialogue between
students, faculty, and staff at the university, as well as activists,
grassroots organizations, and the community-at-large about women's
realities, especially those in the global South, as they cope with
climate change. This event is crucial because it adds to the
mainstream debates and discourses about environmental justice and
equity. No Climate Justice Without Gender Justice springs out of the
need to respond to the failures of the Copenhagen Conference to
adequately address how women and children have been most adversely
affected by climate change. After the success of campus events such
as Climate Justice Now!, which saw over 150 people in attendance,
gender and climate justice is a relevant issue that needs to be
discussed on campus and in the community.

Professor Alissa Trotz, grassroots women's organizer Nidhi Tandon, Dr.
Erich Vogt of American University and George Washington University,
and representatives from Oxfam and the Toronto Haiti Action Committee
will be speaking at this conference.

Refreshments will be provided. In order to cater for certain dietary
preferences, vegan, vegetarian, and Halal options will be offered to
those in attendance.

STORY OF STUFF IN TORONTO

Join Annie Leonard, author of The Story of Stuff in conversation with
Heather Reisman, CEO of Indigo Books.

Friday, March 12, 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Indigo Books, Manulife Centre Street: 55 Bloor Street West

We have a problem with Stuff. With just 5 percent of the worlds
population, were consuming 30 percent of the worlds resources and
creating 30 percent of the worlds waste. If everyone consumed at U.S.
rates, we would need three to five planets!

This alarming fact drove Annie Leonard to create the Internet film
sensation The Story of Stuff, http://www.storyofstuff.com/ which has
been viewed over 10 million times by people around the world. In her
sweeping, groundbreaking book of the same name, Leonard tracks the
life of the Stuff we use every daywhere our cotton T-shirts, laptop
computers, and aluminum cans come from, how they are produced,
distributed, and consumed, and where they go when we throw them out.
Like Rachel Carsons Silent Spring, The Story of Stuff is a landmark
book that will change the way people thinkand the way they live.

In a globalized economy, urban dwellers have lost contact with the
source of all the goods they use in everyday life. We forget that
everything we use comes from the biosphere and when we are finished
with it, it goes back into the biosphere as waste. Annie Leonard's
simple video, The Story of Stuff, is a powerful educational tool that
is desperately needed. It is wonderful that she has expanded on that
video in this book. For all who care about the world that we are
leaving for our children, this is a must read.
