Better Ballots Mayoral Forum
Tuesday, June 1, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Hart House • Debates Room • U of T
Map: http://tinyurl.com/2883uh
Reception at 6:30
Forum at 7pm
Better Ballots believes that we should expect more from our elections.
Turnout is low, turnover is rare and Council does not represent
Toronto's rich diversity.
Are there ways to make the system work better? We looked at 14
specific options currently being used in cities like Montreal,
Vancouver, New York & San Francisco. We hosted four Town Hall meetings
across the city, connecting with hundreds of people asking for ideas
and feedback. Now we want to ask our mayoral candidates which options
they like and whether they are prepared to make any commitments to
reforming our electoral system to make it more fair and inclusive.
Join us at this exciting Mayoral Forum on June 1st, at Hart House,
University of Toronto. (map: http://tinyurl.com/2883uh)
Eight candidates will be highlighted at this event. They were chosen
using media polling as well as our own online poll. In the spirit of
democracy and fairness, we've invited the remaining 18 candidates to
participate by giving them each a short opportunity to introduce
themselves and briefly present their views on the topic of election
reform.
The highlighted candidates are: Joe Pantalone, George Smitherman,
Giorgio Mammoliti, Keith Cole, Rob Ford, Rocco Achampong, Rocco Rossi
and Sarah Thomson.
A reception will begin at 6:30. Seating is limited, so people are
encouraged to come early to ensure a seat.
This event is proudly presented by Better Ballots, The Emerging
Leaders Network and the Mowat Centre for Policy Innovation.

Restorative Circles for Handling Conflict in Groups, Organisations,
Communities and Families
Wed, June 2 and Fri, June 4
10 am – 5 p.m. both days
at Sketch, 580 King St W. 2nd Floor, (between Brant and Portland Sts)
Sliding Scale: $100-$250
Misunderstandings and conflict are an inevitable part of the diversity
of life. Yet few of us individually, let alone as a community, know
how to respond to conflict with behaviours that do not produce pain
and damage relationships. The Restorative Circle process offers ways
for individuals, families, groups/organizations, and communities to
create spaces for conflict that are safe and constructive. Restorative
Circles create a forum through which diverse peoples can dialogue with
respect and understanding in order to reach agreements that sustain
effective and nurturing relationships, both personally and within our
larger society.
This workshop will present the systemic approach developed by Dominic
Barter which has been nationally recognized in Brazil for effective
innovation in both the areas of Justice and Education. Independent
research has found over 90% of conflicts using Restorative Circles
have been resolved to the satisfaction of those polled. It has been
adopted by diverse local communities from shanty town communities to
national court systems in an increasing number of countries and
cultures around the world.

Transit Town - Steve Munro on the Transit Future in the GTA
Wednesday, June 2, 7 p.m.
Toronto City Hall, Committee Room #1, Second Floor, 100 Queen Street
West (at Bay)
Being informed about public transit in the GTA means reading Steve
Munro’s blog (http://stevemunro.ca/). Since his membership in
“Streetcars for Toronto” in 1972, Steve Munro has consistently been
one of the most important voices on transit issues in Toronto.
In the years since the dark ages of Mike Harris and Mel Lastman,
transit has become a major issues at both the municipal and provincial
levels, and Steve Munro has been one of the relentless advocates who
has kept the issue high in public awareness. He writes for Spacing
magazine, and began his blog 4 years ago (but be warned - reading his
blog is a humbling experience for anyone who thinks they are well
informed on transit issues in Toronto).
