“Environmental degradation and global warming, and their impacts, are economic and security issues as well as environmental ones. Failure to address climate change will put the global economy at further risk, and plunge millions who are already living on the economic margins into deeper poverty. This poverty leads to more migration, more violence and greater social and economic insecurity for both developing and developed nations.”
- In a letter from six Nobel Laureates sent to PM Harper

Fortress Toronto: Secrets of the fence
Fortress Toronto looks like a prison warden’s dream, with 5.5 million GTA residents locked out of their own city core by a wire filigree stretching three metres high. By the time the summit ends, an estimated 10,000 Canadian law enforcement personnel — the Mounties, members of Canada’s spy agency, CSIS, Metro police, Ontario Provincial Police, military, government officials — will have planned, studied, seen or physically passed through the fencing. Countless more international security professionals will have been briefed on its attributes.

Canada's Climate Change Calendar
Climate change is not a problem of the distant future - it is happening now. Canada’s Climate Change Calendar describes the impacts of climate change on more than 170 countries, and draws attention to the inspiring actions that communities are taking to fight climate change at home.
Canada is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. At 22.9 metric tons, Canada's annual level of per person emissions is more than 13 times higher than that of India, for example.

Canada owns the podium for inaction at Bonn climate talks
With international climate treaty negotiations underway again in Bonn, Germany this week, a fossil-of-the-day award has been handed to Canada by the International Climate Action Network (CAN) - a worldwide network of over 450 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
The fossil-of-the-day is given out each day of negotiations as a means of calling out the countries who have been particular bad actors at the negotiating table. As of last count, Canada has more fossils than any other country in the world.
In fact, last year Canada was named the "Fossil of the Year" and awarded a "Colossal Fossil."

The Maple Leaf in the OECD
Canada’s cold climate no excuse for poor environmental record
Weak government policies are behind Canada’s poor environmental record, not the country’s cold climate and large size according to a new study released by Simon Fraser University and the David Suzuki Foundation. Canada has the second worst environmental record of OECD countries, ranking 24th out of 25 countries. Only the United States ranks lower. The top ranking countries are Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

Greenpeace Protesters Who Oppose Off-Shore Drilling Could Face Terrorism Charges
Seven Greenpeace activists have been charged after using oil from the Gulf Coast spill to paint the side of a Royal Dutch Shell ship with the words "Arctic Next?" Shell has been granted permission to drill the Arctic as early as this summer. The Greenpeace activists could face terrorism charges. Now, in the wake of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, we are to believe it is the activists, not the oil corporations, who are the criminals?

BP Is a Corporate Criminal
The wider and deeper that this catastrophe spreads, the more we discover just how oily this giant is. It has been implicated in bribery, overthrowing governments, plunder and money laundering, plus having established one of the worst safety and environmental records in an industry that is notoriously reckless on both counts. In the last three years, an astonishing "97 percent of all flagrant violations found in the refining industry by government safety inspectors" came at BP facilities. These included 760 violations rated as "egregious" and "willful.”

Girls now begin puberty aged 9 - Link to High Meat Consumption
GROWING numbers of girls are reaching puberty before the age of 10, raising fears of increased sexual activity among a new generation of children.
Scientists believe the phenomenon could be linked to obesity or exposure to chemicals in the food chain, and is putting girls at greater long-term risk of breast cancer.
Hitting puberty early can mean longer exposure to oestrogen, which is a factor in breast cancer. There is also a greater risk of heart disease.
A number of artificially produced chemicals have been blamed for interfering with sexual development, notably bisphenol A, a plastic found in the lining of tin cans and babies’ feeding bottles.

Millions of litres of sewage, dangerous liquids accidentally dumped in cities: analysis
Far more sewage has been spilled in Canadian urban centres over the last six years than any other harmful contaminant, newly released figures show. An analysis by The Canadian Press reveals hundreds of millions of litres of sewage, as well as many other dangerous liquids, have been dumped right under Canadians’ noses. This never-before-released information has been kept in a classified government database called NEMISIS. The acronym stands for National Enforcement Management Information System and Intelligence System. Federal enforcement officers use the database to go after polluters.
