Post Carbon Toronto presents:

Steve Munro: The Future of Transit in the GTA

Wednesday, September 22, 7 PM
U of T - Health Sciences Building , 155 College St Auditorium (Room 610) (west of Queen's Park subway and east of King's College Road)

The 2005 recipient of the Jane Jacobs Prize, Steve Munro has been "a passionate and unwavering advocate for the improvement of Toronto's transit system for more than 35 years." - Ideas That Matter

Munro's blog, stevemunro.ca, is arguably the best way to stay informed about public transit in the GTA. Since his membership in “Streetcars for Toronto” in 1972, Munro has consistently been one of the most important voices on transit issues in Toronto. In the years since the dark ages of Mike Harris and Mel Lastman, transit has become a major issue at both the municipal and provincial levels, and Steve Munro has been one of the relentless advocates who has kept the issue high in public awareness. He writes for Spacing magazine, and began his blog 4 years ago (be warned - reading it is a humbling experience for anyone who thinks they are well informed on transit issues in Toronto).

Gideon Levy, Ha’aretz Journaist, Toronto Lecture:
THE PUNISHMENT OF GAZA

Wednesday, September 22, 7:30 p.m.
MacLeod Auditorium (Room 2158) , Medical Sciences Building , 1 King’s College Circle, U of T

$15 - Non-students, $10 - Students (with student ID)

(Limited seating, so purchase your ticket early to avoid disappointment. Online purchasers will have reserved seating near the front of the hall. To purchase online, click here.)

On September 20 writer Gideon Levy will embark on a seven-city lecture tour of Canada hosted by CJPME . The tour kicks off in Montreal and will wrap up in Vancouver on September 26. This lecture is a rare opportunity for Canadians to hear from this “Israeli dedicated to saving his country’s honour” (The Guardian).

Levy, a journalist with Israeli newspaper Haaretz since 1982, has covered the Israeli–Palestinian conflict—in particular the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank—for over 20 years. His perspective is one rarely heard in Canada—that of an Israeli still living in his homeland and sharing its vulnerabilities, but unflinching in his appraisal of its conduct. The son of two Holocaust survivors, Levy was born in Tel Aviv and still makes his home there. He served in the Israeli army from 1974-78, and was an aide to Shimon Peres (then leader of the Israeli Labour Party and now Israel’s President) from 1978 to 1982. Levy was the recipient of the Euro-Med Journalist Prize for 2008, the Leipzig Freedom Prize in 2001, the Israeli Journalists’ Union Prize in 1997, and The Association of Human Rights in Israel Award for 1996.

In his new book — “The Punishment of Gaza” — Levy analyzes how the ground was prepared for the 2009 invasion of Gaza, and the attack’s continuing effects. He tracks Israel’s abandonment since 2005 of the pretence of diplomacy in favour of a policy of provocation and raw military power. This, he argues, is being done with the ultimate aim of denying Palestinians any opportunity to form their own independent state. Levy explains, “I am asking all Israelis to be outraged – or at least to understand what is being perpetrated in their name, so that they may never have the right to claim: ‘we did not know.’” CJPME President Thomas Woodley says “CJPME is sponsoring this tour so that Canadians will know, and will insist on a more balanced Canadian stance on Middle East issues.” Levy’s lecture promises to be fascinating.

Who Belongs? Rights, Benefits, Obligations and Immigration Status

Thu Sep 23–Sat Sep 25
University of Toronto, Faculty of Law , 84 Queen's Park

In Canada, as in many other parts of the world, an individual’s immigration status may play a significant role in determining how various rights, benefits and obligations are allocated. This is true for the allocation of various social benefit programs, employment opportunities, and legal and democratic rights. The principal aim of this conference is to explore the consequences of the differential access to rights, benefits and obligations on the basis of immigration status, and provide a framework to assist in analyzing how these distinctions should be made.

Sponsored by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA)and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights, University of Toronto.

Leading the Way to a Third Industrial Revolution
with Jeremy Rifkin
Economist and President, Foundation on Economic Trends, USA

Thursday, September 23, 4 – 5 p.m.
Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto

Humanity, according to Jeremy Rifkin, is poised to make a definitive shift away from its carbon-based geopolitical reality toward a new paradigm of sustainability. The internationally influential economist, known for his provocative environmental theories, sees this profound change as taking place along generational lines and considers it to be the uppermost challenge for the millennial generation. In his view, this sustainable human future must be founded upon four pillars: 1) renewable energy; 2) buildings as positive power plants; 3) hydrogen storage; and 4) smartgrids and plug-in vehicles. In his much-anticipated keynote address, Jeremy will lay out his vision of the Third Industrial Revolution, and explain how the economic infrastructure necessary for this revolution will transform the skill levels and managerial styles of the workforce, advance energy security, prompt educational reform, and improve the quality of life worldwide.

Planet in Focus presents:

Waste: The Nuclear Nightmare (Dechets: Le Cauchemar du Nucleaire)

Run time: 98 min. | France/ Germany
Friday September 24th, 6:45 pm
Gardiner Museum, 111 Queen’s Park, Toronto
Pay-What-You-Can ($7.00 suggested)

As even ecologists reconsider nuclear as an alternative to burning carbon, Waste: The Nuclear Nightmare examines the impact of nuclear waste for the near future and next hundreds of thousands of years. The 'energy of the future' is astutely dissected- clearly outlining how nuclear power is generated, how waste is created and systematically uncovers what happens to waste produced in nuclear plants in France. The public relations myth that 'waste is recycled' unravels as the final destination of tons of contaminated material is revealed. Key to this film is its use of Google map imagery and clear animation to counter the red tape and political double-speak. Waste is allowed incredible access to French nuclear plants, recycling facilities, and the archives of Greenpeace Europe and testing facilities of CRIIRAD. And while some hope is presented for the future, you'll want answers from our own government about what is happening to nuclear waste in Canada.

At the same time, it is crucial to carry what we have learned during those days forward to ongoing and future struggles.

Agenda:
1. Roundtable discussion: Noaman Ali, Sam Gindin, Mohan Mishra, Clare O’Connor. Moderated by Alan Sears
2. Discussion in smaller groups.
3. Report back to a final plenary.

Unveiling Ceremony - Memorial Wall Plaques Dedicated to Patient Labourers Past
Saturday, September 25, 1:00 p.m.
Corner of Queen Street West and Shaw Street.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the oldest part of the patient-built boundary wall, constructed in 1860, which stands on the south side of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) at 1001 Queen Street West. These patient-built walls, along with the 1888-89 walls on the east and west sides, are a testament to the abilities of people whose unpaid labour was central to the operation of asylums in the Province of Ontario during the 19th & 20th centuries.

Join us as we unveil a series of nine memorial plaques in remembrance. A tour of the wall and all nine plaques will follow the dedication ceremony.

Sponsored by Psychiatric Survivor Archives, Toronto (PSAT), CAMH, and the generous support of many community donors.

RALLY AGAINST ENBRIDGE NORTHERN GATEWAY PIPELINE

Enbridge, the company responsible for the recent pipeline rupture that
caused 20,000 barrels of oil to be dumped into a creek that flows into the
Kalamazoo river, is seeking approval to build it's Northern Gateway
pipeline to connect the tar sands to the northern coast of B.C.

If approved this pipeline would not only increase tar sands production by
30% but also cut across 50 different First Nation territories putting
those areas at risk to another pipeline rupture. Affected First Nations
communities have expressed the concern that the Gateway project
demonstrates a complete lack of recognition of Native title and land
holdings, given that the project should legally adhere to Section 35 of
the Canadian constitution, which recognizes and affirms existing
aboriginal treaty rights.
(visit www.pipeupagainstenbridge.ca for more info)

Enbridge is no stranger to oil spills either, since 1999 Enbridge has over
600 reported pipeline ruptures that have dumped over 132,000 barrels of
oil into the environment.

Enbridge is holding an important investors meeting in Toronto on October
5th and we need as many people as possible to come on out and show
Enbridge's investors that Canadians respect the rights of First Nations,
don't want an increase in tar sands developments and are opposed to the
Northern Gateway Pipeline. Location and time to be announced.

If you would like to be involved in a rally to stop the pipeline contact:
