DOC Night Out Screening:

Vine of the Soul

On November First, the latest installment of the DOC Night Out series will take place at The Annex Live. This month we will screen Vine of the Soul, the latest from director (and DOC Toronto Member) Richard Meech. Following the screening, Richard will engage in a Q&A and discussion moderated by fellow local filmmaker Alison Rose (Love at the Twilight Motel).

About the Film: Can a sacred plant from the Amazon heal our minds and spirits? For centuries, indigenous people of South America have used ayahuasca, a psychoactive plant medicine, to cure all manner of psycho-spiritual ills. "Vine of the Soul” is a documentary that explores this brave new world, offering insights into the nature of faith, mystical experience and self-healing through a heightened state of consciousness. Filmmaker Richard Meech follows key protagonists as they journey to Peru – and back home – capturing in verité style both the life-altering epiphanies and nights of terror encountered after drinking the sacred brew.

Ecuadorian villagers hope to set a precedent in Canadian courts. Following violent upheaval in their remote cloud forest home, they have launched a lawsuit against Vancouver-based Copper Mesa Mining and the Toronto Stock Exchange that could raise the bar for hundreds of companies speculating on Canadian exchanges. 
 
For more than a decade, farmers, environmentalists, small business people and local government leaders have waged a struggle in the remote Intag valley in northwestern Ecuador against open-pit copper mining. They want to protect their forests - among the most biodiverse on earth - while pursuing more sustainable economic alternatives. 
 
But the nefarious and sometimes violent tactics of companies such as Vancouver-based Copper Mesa Mining Corporation have taken their toll, often causing divisions between family members and neighbours in these small villages. When Clouds Clear, an award-winning full length feature film, documents the lives of these remote villagers and explains why they keep fighting, despite the odds.  
 
Join us for a screening of the acclaimed documentary, When Clouds Clear, by Anne Slick and Danielle Bernstein. In 2010, this film was nominated for a Green Globe Film Award in the category of “Best International Film of the Decade” along with Disney's “Earth.”
 
The film will be followed by discussion with special guests:
-       Cory Wanless, lawyer from Klippenstein's Barristers & Solicitors, to address the Ramirez vs. Copper Mesa & TSX case
-       Jennifer Moore, independent journalist who lived and worked from Ecuador between 2007 and 2010 with a focus on conflicts pertaining to Canadian mining projects.

South of the Border is a film directed by Oliver Stone. Writer for the project Tariq Ali calls the documentary "a political road movie". The film has Stone and his crew travel from the Caribbean down the spine of the Andes in an attempt to explain the "phenomenon" of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, and account for the continent's recent leftward tilt. It features Venezuela's Bolivarian movement and Latin America's political progress in the 21st century.

Preceded by a brief introduction, and followed by a commentary and an open floor discussion period with Cuba Consul General Jorge Soberon and Venezuela Deputy Consul General Aura Samira.

Earth 2100: what will the next 90 years look like?

This film, first aired by ABC television network in 2009, shows us what could happen in the next 90 years in North America, if there is nothing done to mitigate climate change. Sadly nothing is being done at the federal level in Canada right now and the situation is worsening. What are the consequences?
 
Earth 2100 is a compelling narrative, interspersed with interviews from leading climate change experts. Of all the major climate change films (Inconvenient Truth, Age of Stupid, The 11th Hour, etc) Earth 2100 is arguably the best of the lot.
