The Second Palestinian Intifada: A Retrospective in Photos with Jon Elmer

Monday, November 8th, 7pm

Beit Zatoun House, 612 Markham Street

Ten years ago in October 2000, popular protests erupted throughout Israel-Palestine. Israel's harsh military response quickly transformed

the uprising into a war that redefined the nature of the conflict. Israel's withdrawal from its settlements in Gaza and the establishment of a 700-km wall encircling Palestinians in the West Bank has opened a new chapter in the struggle for justice in Palestine.

Join us for an evening of photography and discussion on the tenth anniversary of the second intifada.

Jon Elmer is a photographer and journalist who has lived in and covered the West Bank and Gaza since 2003. His work has appeared in Le Monde diplomatique, Al Jazeera English and the Journal for Palestine Studies. He's currently based in Bethlehem. http://jonelmer.ca

Organized by the Ontario Public Interest Research Group and the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid.

Stop the Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal!

Emergency Protest endorsed by Community Solidarity Network

Tues. November 9, 6-7:30pm
US consulate, 360 University Ave.

On November 9, the U.S. Third Circuit Court in Philadelphia will hear oral arguments concerning whether Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black journalist and political prisoner who has been on death row for 28 years, should be executed or given a new sentencing trial. If the court rules against Mumia he could soon be executed. According to lead attorney, Robert R. Bryan, Mumia is now “in the greatest danger since his 1981 arrest.”

In 2001, U.S. District Court Judge William Yohn ruled that before Mumia could be executed there must first be a new sentencing-phase jury trial where new evidence could be presented. This 2001 ruling was affirmed by the U.S. Third Circuit in 2008, but in January 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated that ruling and sent the case back to the Third Circuit for reconsideration.

Mountains of evidence, including witness recantations, a confession from the actual killer and photographic evidence of the crime scene, proves Mumia’s innocence. Yet state and federal courts have slammed the door on this outspoken opponent of war, racism, police brutality and corruption. We have to stop them! Mumia must be freed!

CCLA and the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) Public Hearings on G20 Policing.
On November 10th and 11th, 2010, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the National Union of Public and General Employees will be co-hosting two days of public hearings to examine police activity during the recent G20 Summit in Toronto. We are inviting members of the public affected by G20 Summit security to attend this event to speak about how their contact with the police during the G20 Summit impacted them personally. If you are available to join us, please contact Graeme Norton at gnorton at ccla.org

The hearings will provide an opportunity for individuals who witnessed or were affected by objectionable police conduct during the Summit to share their stories. The primary objectives of the hearings will be: to educate Canadians on the importance of the relationship between democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly; to increase public awareness regarding the impact of the G20 Summit on constitutional rights and freedoms; and to promote accountability for the alleged violations of constitutional rights that occurred during the G20 Summit. The CCLA and NUPGE will be producing a report on these hearings which will be released in January 2011.

During the G20 summit in June this year, the residents of Toronto bore witness to the largest mass arrest in Canadian history as approximately 1200 people were assaulted, harassed, beaten and arrested by the police. More than 250 were charged and six remain in jail. Others are out on bail under extraordinarily restrictive conditions, continuing to face police harassment and re-arrest. Legal costs are mounting.

Despite this repression, more than 40,000 people marched on the streets of Toronto to resist the destructive, exploitative and exclusionary agenda of the G20. As we continue to organize against the G20 agenda, we must now also raise money to defend all those who are forced to go through expensive legal proceedings.

Tickets also available at the following stores:
Another Story, 315 Roncesvalles Ave
Rotate This, 801 Queen Street W.
Soundscapes, 572 College Street
Toronto Women’s Bookstore, 3 Harbord St

This is a 19+ event. Limited capacity: Please book your ticket as early as possible to ensure availability.

The Molotov Rag presents
Folk The G20!

Sun. 14 November at 7:00pm
Saving Gigi Cafe, 859 Bloor Street West

This city and its neighbouring townships have a story to tell, one of tragedy and bravery, of oppression and dissent. The Molotov Rag, with the help of our community, is embarking on its newest issue: A People’s History of the G20 in Toronto. We are telling our own narratives, from our own experiences, and without reservation. Those who have been denied their voice, will have their chance to speak. And to help make ...this chance happen, we are inviting you to come sing and dance as we Folk The G20!: a fundraiser in support of our fifth issue.

"Folk The G20!" is an evening of song and dance; an intimate and yet high-energy folk dance party that will keep your toes tapping longer and faster than a riot squad during the G20. With performances by Rambunctious, Chris Bezant, Byron, and more exciting acts to be announced, there's sure to be something everyone can dance to. You are also invited to bring an instrument and join in for an impromptu folk jam to keep the dance party going afterward - after all, we are strongest when we work together!

You will also have a chance to purchase official merchandise and back issues of The Molotov Rag, satisfy your cruelty-free sweet tooth with delicious vegan baked goods and refreshments, and try your luck at the raffle for a chance to win prizes!

$5 at the door, and no one will be denied access for lack of funds, or shoes. This is an all-ages, unlicensed, family-friendly event.

The Molotov Rag is an entirely volunteer-run collective.
