G20 Fundraiser!
PWYC DOCUMENTARY DOUBLE FEATURE NIGHTS
Tues. November 16, 8:30-11:30pm EST
at SOYBOMB!, 156 Bathurst St.
Presented in conjunction with Beit Zatoun:
The first (of two) documentary nights taking up the issue of the conflict in the regions known as Palestine and Israel.
1) "Occupation 101"
http://www.occupation101.com/about.html
"A thought-provoking and powerful documentary film on the current and historical root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Unlike any other film ever produced on the conflict -- 'Occupation 101' presents a comprehensive analysis of the facts and hidden truths surrounding the never ending controversy and dispels many of its long-perceived myths and misconceptions.
The film also details life under Israeli military rule, the role of the United States in the conflict, and the major obstacles that stand in the way of a lasting and viable peace. The roots of the conflict are explained through first-hand on-the-ground experiences from leading Middle East scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets.
The film covers a wide range of topics -- which include -- the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the
1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy."
2) "Jenin, Jenin"
http://www.jeninjenin.org/film.htm
""Jenin Jenin" (54 minutes) shows the extent to which the prolonged oppression and terror has affected the state of mind of the Palestinian inhabitants of the Jenin refugee camp.
Listen to the old men, the children, the doctors and the grieving mothers of Jenin, after the Israeli army's April 2002 attack flattened homes and buried an unknown number of civilians. Bitterness and grief are the prevailing feelings among the majority of the population. Many have lost loved ones or are still searching for victims and belongings among the debris. 'Where is God,' an elderly man desperately wonders when surveying the debris in the Jenin refugee camp.
A little girl, who does not seem to be much older than twelve, tells her story but knows no fear. The ongoing violence in her day-to-day life only nourishes her feelings of hatred and the urge to take revenge. She shouts that the Palestinians will never give up the struggle, that they will keep on producing children who can continue the fight against injustice.
The sad question forces itself on the spectator. What will become of a country, a people when its children are confronted with war and violence from a very early age_ Banned in Israel, "Jenin Jenin" is dedicated to Iyad Samudi, the producer of the film, who was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on June 23rd, 2002, as he returned home after completing the film. Toronto’s Transportation: Which Track to Take, and How
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 7:30 PM
Metro Hall, 55 John St , Room 308/309
If any of you are like me you have at best a foggy notion of the powers and limitations attendant on the position of Toronto Mayor. A question of greater public interest than usual just now. At the same time we all have to wonder about the future of public transit in our fair city now that this baton has been passed from Mayor Miller to Mayor Ford. Luckily we at PCT have a superb source of information on both of these issues who has agreed to speak and answer the questions that matter most to you on both of these subjects.
Richard Gilbert was a Toronto councilor (City and Metro Councils) from 1976 to 1991. Since then, after a stint as head of the Canadian Urban Institute, he has worked as an independent consultant focusing on energy and transportation, mostly for clients outside Canada. He has maintained an interest in Toronto’s urban governance and transportation and has written much on these topics, including several articles in the Toronto Star. These items and many others are available at his Web site: www.richardgilbert.ca. Also available – at bookstores – is the 2010 edition of his latest book, Transport Revolutions: Moving People and Freight without Oil, written with Anthony Perl.

Book Launch: Imperialist Canada by Todd Gordon
Thursday November 18, 7 p.m.
Latinada Bar and Restaurant, 1671 Bloor St. West
Imperialist Canada exposes Canada's imperialist past and present, at home and across the globe. Todd Gordon interweaves histories of indigenous dispossession in Canada with the cold facts of Canadian capital’s oppression of peoples in the global South. The book digs beneath the surface of Canada’s image as global peacekeeper and promoter of human rights, revealing the links between the corporate pursuit of profit and Canadian foreign and domestic policy. Drawing on examples from Colombia, the Congo, Sudan, Haiti and elsewhere, Imperialist Canada makes a passionate plea for greater critical attention to Canada’s role in the global order.

Living on Earth as if we want to stay
Friday, Nov 19, 6:00 pm (brining some food and join us at 5:30)
Friend's Meeting House, 60 Lowther Ave (near Bloor and St. George)
Mike Nickerson, the author of "Life, Money and Illusion; Living on Earth as if we want to stay" has spent 35 years studying cultural evolution and how we might adapt to our new circumstances. He will outline promising opportunities that await our collective choice to respect and accommodate planetary limits and key mechanisms by which that choice is advancing. It is a question of direction.
There has been a fundamental change in the relationship between people and the Earth. It used to be that societies could grow out of their troubles. Now, with human activity stretching planetary limits, a new approach is necessary. While the human family is more than capable of securing healthy, satisfying communities far into the future, to do so, we have to choose a new direction. The solution will be as challenging, proportionally, to our societies as accepting grown-up responsibility is to individuals.

About the Workshop
Citizens’ groups fighting to protect natural spaces, stop incinerators, ensure more sustainable planning etc. are usually outgunned by “experts”, outmaneuvered by municipal staff, shut out by local media and outfoxed by politicians. But citizens groups can beat all these odds and win. Learn how at the Organize to Win seminar led by Oakvillegreen Conservation Association president Liz Benneian, an award-winning community activist and environmental leader.
The seminar will discuss: how to organize; forming successful strategies; developing effective tactics; getting publicity; understanding bureaucracies and politicians; and avoiding pitfalls. Plenty of real life examples of successes and strategies will be given and those attending will be encouraged to add to the discussion with their stories and questions. The seminar is geared to give participants useful tools their groups can employ immediately to become more successful. The seminar will be especially helpful to groups that are just forming, offering critical information on how to get a new group organized. This seminar is not just for group leaders but for all members who want to learn how to become more successful advocates.
