Great Minds for Whose Future? - Anti-Corporatization teach-in

Saturday, January 22 · 10:00am - 5:00pm
Sidney Smith Hall, University of Toronto

Earlier this year, Peter Munk, the chairman and founder of the world’s largest gold mining company, gave a historic contribution of $35 million to the University of Toronto. In doing so, he created the Munk School of Global Affairs, which aims to prepare students to become global leaders and foster “a deep understanding of the broader architecture and the forces that shape the global system.”

But what are the implications of this donation? How much influence will Munk have over the University’s curriculum and bias? Who is Peter Munk and what is his company Barrick Gold’s reputationworldwide?
Financial crisis and austerity have ignited a new wave of student protest around the world, from Berkeley to London, Athens to San Juan. Our intention with this conference is to empower local critical thinkers and activists to devise our plan in the fight for just education.

Our goal is to launch the “Reclaiming the U of T” campaign on January 22.

The conference schedule includes “ Lessons from California” with faculty and student from UC Berkeley, “ Worth Fighting For: Human Rights vs. U of T” with Linda McQuaig, Mark Rowlinson and Sakura Saunders and “ Worth Fighting For: Good Education vs. U of T” with Paul Hamel, John Valleau and Leslie Jermyn.

LET THEM STAY!
Day of Action in support of US Iraq War resisters

Join Canadians across the country in support of US Iraq War resisters, who are currently threatened with deportation by the Conservative minority government.

Saturday, January 22, 1:00pm-2:30pm
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street (near College and Spadina)

With special guests:
• Ashlea Brockway Ashlea and her husband Jeremy sought refuge in Canada with their family after he refused to return to fight in Iraq.
• Alyssa Manning legal counsel
… and video interview with Iraq War resister Jeremy Brockway • mass letter-writing • refreshments

From January 15 to 22 people across Canada will participate in a national “Let Them Stay Week”. From film nights to public forums, from music events to information pickets, events are already being planned in Grand Forks, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Windsor, Sudbury, Toronto, Peterborough, Newmarket, Fredericton, Halifax and St. John's.

It was seven years ago that Jeremy Hinzman and his family arrived in Toronto, after Jeremy refused to deploy to Iraq. Jeremy was the first US Iraq War resister to seek asylum in Canada.

Since then, Canadians have mobilized by the thousands to ensure that US soldiers who refused to participate in the illegal and immoral war in Iraq be allowed to stay in Canada. The overwhelming majority of Canadians oppose the Iraq War and two-thirds support US Iraq War resisters. The Iraq War Logs released by Wikileaks show that war resisters were right to say no: by the US military’s own estimates, the Iraq War has killed more than 100,000 people, two-thirds of them civilians. Many were victims of massacres and torture.

Canada's Parliament has voted twice to stop deporting Iraq War resisters and to let them stay—reaffirming Canada’s proud tradition of welcoming conscientious objectors. But the minority Conservative government has refused to respect the traditions and democratic decisions of Canadians, and instead has deported war resisters to be jailed in the US.

Canada's Minister of Immigration Jason Kenney has prejudiced the immigration proceedings of Iraq War resisters by making biased comments in the media and by issuing a directive to immigration officers that singles out war resisters as potential criminals.

The Harper government has been hoping that Canadians will forget about the Iraq War, and lose interest in the plight of the principled individuals who said no to that war. But Canadians have not forgotten – and Wikileaks has brought home the cruel reality of that war once again. We urge all those who support Iraq War resisters to make their voices heard during Let Them Stay Week and remind politicians, as Parliament gets set to resume at the end of January, that Canadians want to Let Them Stay!

Organized by the War Resisters Support Campaign • www.resisters.ca • 416.598.1222 • resisters at sympatico.ca

Community Justice Coalition - Meeting

Sat. Jan. 22, 2 - 5 p.m.
519 Church Street Comunity Centre - Ballroom

ABOUT THE COMMUNITY JUSTICE COALITION
The Community Justice Coalition is a group of about 80 people from disparate backgrounds including Lawyers, Ex-prisoners Healthcare Workers and Community Justice Workers who initially came together in February of 2010 to resist the Harper government's neo-liberal "Law and Order" agenda, which seeks to lock away more people and for longer periods of time.

CONCERNED ABOUT INCREASED PRISON SPENDING?
Without a doubt, Canada is moving towards the US-style of justice that has proven to be ineffective. Law-and-order legislation and increased prison construction will not make our communities safer. In fact, if things transpire as they have in the US, the result will be just the opposite.

CONCERNED ABOUT COMMUNITY SAFETY?
Money spent on new prisons could be spent on increasing income subsidies, affordable housing, effective drug and harm reduction programs, youth programs, etc. - that is, actions shown to be far more effective in diminishing crime than are tougher sentences and additional prisons.
The systematic dismantling of our social programs combined with the conservative enforcement agenda will ensure record numbers of Canadians experiencing the inside of a jail cell. This is not how we envision a healthy, free and democratic nation. Join us to talk about alternatives.

AT THE MEETING
 - DECONSTRUCTING THE PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX
 - COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND CAPACITY BUILDING

A Downtown Budget Information Session

Co-hosted by Councillors Kristyn Wong-Tam, Pam McConnell & Adam Vaughan

Saturday January 22, 2 – 4 pm
City Hall, Council Chambers, 100 Queen Street West

The City's Budgets for Operating and Capital expenses were released yesterday. Service cuts are proposed that I am worried about. They include:

-Closing of the Urban Affairs Library at Metro Hall
-Elimination of free recreation programs for low-income people
-Elimination of evening and night service on 40+ transit routes, including buses on Dupont, Davenport & Harbord
-Changes to EMS staffing protocols that would eliminate overtime work
-Limits on the new BIAs and funding for streetscape improvements

Detailed information about the proposed budget is available on the City of Toronto's website at http://www.toronto.ca/budget2011/index.htm

Mark your calendar and come out to learn more about how the 2011 Budget will impact our local neighbourhoods and services. Everyone is welcome.
