Oil Spill in Lubicon Territory: When Pipelines Explode
A discussion on the implications for Little Buffalo and how Toronto can support.
With special guest Melina Laboucon-Massimo from the community of Little Buffalo, Lubicon Cree Territory, Alberta

On April 29th, 2011, the Plains All American pipeline burst and caused nearly 4.5 million liters of tar sands crude and diluent to spill uncontrollably out onto Lubicon traditional territory. The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) in Alberta failed to give adequate notice to the community of the spill or information on clean up efforts. In fact, during the first five days of the crisis, the ERCB sent the community just one fax report and failed to attend a community meeting, though were explicitly invited. Most of the community and Peace River region was unaware of the spill for days outside of rumors. However, children experienced nausea, burning eyes and headaches, forcing the school at Little Buffalo to be closed until May 10th. Corporate negligence, coupled with government inaction, compounded by the racism of indifference has left the community reeling. They have been forced now to take matters into their own hands.
The spill has been exacerbated by wildfires burning uncontrolled in Alberta. The community of Little Buffalo, and now the oil spill site, is located near these dangerous, uncontrolled fires. On May 15th, the company suspended clean up efforts because of the fires. Come learn from a discussion on the implications for Little Buffalo and find out how Toronto can support.

2012 Budget Alert! Make Your Voice Heard
Register online here to attend a free information session on OneToronto.ca's Citizen's Guide to the City of Toronto's Core Service's Review.
With an anticipated 2012 budget gap of almost $800 million, Toronto is headed toward deep cuts to vital services, drastically changing the face of our city. There is no time to waste – we need everyone to speak out to protect our city.
The City of Toronto is embarking on three major ‘reviews.’ The Core Services Review (to identify what services are “core” and what can be cut), the User Fee Review (to identify how to make users pay the full cost of services they use) and the “Service Efficiency Studies (to identify which city functions could be privatized, delivered differently). The results of these will determine what services are delivered by the city, how they ard delivered, and who pays for them.
These three reviews are taking place over the next few months, with limited opportunities for public consultation. The Consultation process has just been released. You can check it out here.
‘One Toronto’ is developing a “Citizens Guide” to these initiatives and the consultation processes related to them, and will be conducting a number of information sessions on them over the next three weeks.

The Arab Spring
The world scarcely expected the street protests which began in Tunisia and Egypt earlier this year to propagate so quickly in other countries, from Yemen in the east to Morocco in the west, from Syria in the north to Sudan in the south.
The results of these protest movements have been varied, and the roles played by outside forces -- not just the West but also neighbouring countries and international NGOs -- have been complex. We are deeply honoured to share the insights of Monia Mazigh, who knows the region, and its human rights issues, very well indeed.

Tunisian-born Monia Mazigh believes in freedom and human rights! In 2002 her Canadian husband Maher Arar was suspected of terrorist involvement, detained in the United States, sent to Syria, the land of his birth, and tortured. It was Monia's actions on his behalf that won his release and Canada's official acknowledgment of his complete innocence.
Since then, Monia has been fully engaged in Canadian politics, including as a parliamentary candidate. In 2008, Monia published a book Hope and Despair: My struggle to free my husband Maher Arar. Her second book will be published next fall.

Canadian Communities Not for Sale: Why CETA is bad for Canada

The answer is "absolutely not". Most traditional fruit trees are grafted. Learn how to graft to create the fruit tree of your dreams. Topics include:
Bud grafting and whip or tongue grafting demonstrated.
Cases where you can use seedlings for rootstock and how to do it
Compatibility issues when grafting multiple varieties on a single tree
Scion and Rootstock sources

Bike to Work Group Commute

The ride leaves from various start locations at 7:00am and meets at Yonge and Bloor for 7:30am. From there the ride heads to Nathan Phillips Square for 8:00am to enjoy a complimentary pancake breakfast and other festivities.
The Group Commute was the event that started it all. Bike Month began as bike to work day, and the annual Group Commute and free pancake breakfast remains the marquee event of Bike Month.

A Recipe for Lifelong Activism is a three-day course on self-care, movement-building, movement history and activism and mental health.
Personal Strength, Family Strength, Community Strength is a one-day course on changing approaches to family and how communities and work places must adapt to support all families.
Both courses will be held at OISE and are taught by Tracey Mitchell, a community-based facilitator who helps engage people in creative and courageous conversations toward building a sustainable, equitable and joyful society.
