Community Forum - Core Service Review

Tues. June 7, 6 - 8 pm
The 519 Church Street Community Centre (519 Church, north of Wellesley)

City Services touch our lives every day. Community centres, garbage collection, HIV prevention, public transportation, parks, arts and cultural programs, childcare and libraries are some of the many services provided by the City of Toronto in our communities. For people who are LGBT, or who live in a downtown urban community, city services play an important role in affirming, supporting and strengthening our communities.

The City of Toronto is undertaking a core service review to identify what services the City should deliver, how they can be more efficient and cost effective, and how we should pay for them. The 519 plays a vital role in community engagement within our diverse downtown communities and as part of this role, we will host a community forum on June 7th to discuss the review as a community. The forum intends to create the opportunity for members of our communities to discuss city services, to better understand the review and to assist citizens in engaging with the review process and survey.

Please join us at The 519 on June 7th from 6PM to 8PM for a facilitated consultation and discussion on the City of Toronto's Core Service Review. The outcomes of the Service Review Program will help Council decide which services to change and how to address the funding gap in 2012 and future years. Your voice in that process is important and necessary.

Screening and discussion of "El oro o la vida".

Thursday, June 9 · 7:00pm - 9:00pm

1992 Yonge St.,3rd Floor, 1 block north from Davisville subway station

Amnesty International’s Business and Human Rights Group – Toronto invites you to the screening of El oro o la vida. The documentary, released in May 2011, provides an overview of corporate mining by Canadian companies in Central America and examines some of the main human rights and environmental concerns related to this issue.

Preview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j41OJ3PxplM

El oro o la vida presents a range of perspectives from different actors impacted by Canadian corporate mining in recent years (representatives of mining corporations, community leaders, individuals living in mining-affected communities, government representatives). The approach allows for a greater understanding of the complexities that have brought corporate mining to the forefront of the human rights, environmental and business discourses in the last few years.

Val Croft, former co-chair of the Business and Human Right Group and recently returned from working with mining affected communities in Guatemala, will be leading a discussion after the documentary.

Transnational Migration and Adult Education: Global Issues and Debates

Thur. June 9, 9:00am - 4:00pm
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), 252 Bloor St. West

A pre-conference held in conjunction with the 52nd Adult Education Research Conference (AERC) and the 30th Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education (CASAE) Conference

Keynote speakers: Dr. Roxana Ng, OISE/University of Toronto and Dr. Mary V. Alfred, Texas A&M University

When migrants arrive in a new society, they bring with them their values, language and culture, contributing significantly to the diversity of their host countries. Without a doubt, the resulting demographic, social, and cultural changes create new opportunities for development as well as new challenges for adult education. However, we are left to grapple with many important questions, such as: What is the impact of transnational migration on adult education? What are the challenges and opportunities for adult education? How can adult education best facilitate migrants' adaptation in a new society?

The Commitment to Community Campaign Presents: An Action-Oriented Organizing Meeting

Thursday June 9, 1pm - 5pm
519 Church Street Community Centre (Church & Wellesley)
The 519 is a wheelchair accessible space.

As we speak, Toronto City Council is making plans to balance a huge operating deficit in the 2012 budget. Apparently, everything is under review, all city services are on the line, and decisions are being made very quickly about the future of our city and what programs and services will be cut. The impact of these cuts will be felt by all Torontonians for years to come.

With no time to waste, we have started a campaign that calls on local residents like you to demonstrate your Commitment to Community (C2C). Sign on as a member of the C2C campaign to join your fellow community leaders and neighbours to protect the community services that make your city a healthy, safe and vibrant place to live. Get involved as the C2C campaign grows by attending our upcoming action-oriented organizing meeting:

To stay informed, please join the C2C mailing list by signing up at http://socialplanningtoronto.org/c2c

We need to organize in every ward of this city. Please forward this message and invitation to your contacts.

Please RSVP to Anita by June 7th at 5 pm at c2c at socialplanningtoronto.org or by calling 416 351-0095 x256.

Working Suburbs: Activism in Suburban Toronto

Friday, June 10, 7:00 PM
Regal Beagle (back room), 335 Bloor St. W. (just west of St. George subway)

How important are Toronto’s inner and outer suburbs to current struggles against austerity measures and cutbacks to public services? Are suburban communities the most logical place to launch resistance? What types of innovative activism is taking place in suburban communities? Does the growing income gap between the downtown core and the inner suburbs challenge solidarity among fightback groups? Is there a disconnect between activist groups largely based in the suburbs and those centred in downtown Toronto? What can we do to build solidarity throughout the entire GTA? These and other questions will be discussed at the next GTWA coffeehouse on June 10th.

Speakers:
Deb Cowen, Department of Geography, University of Toronto
Members of Jane-Finch Action Against Poverty (JFAAP)
