Rethinking Toronto Police: a Public Forum
Monday, June 20 · 7 pm - 10 pm
The 519 Church Street Community Centre
Sponsored by the Toronto Police Accountability Coalition
This is a wheelchair accessible space.
This public forum provides an opportunity to discuss new and alternative ideas about police issues in Toronto.
The evening will include brief ten-minute speeches, each focused on one of four key issues:
a) Where should we cut money in policing? Councillor Adam Vaughan
b) Alternatives to how police deal with young people. Speaker TBA.
c) How do we end sexist, racist and other inequitable police practises? Carol Tator, York University
d) Challenging police culture. Mariana Valverde, Centre for Criminology, University of Toronto
Following these remarks, we will break into four groups in which members of the audience will participate in discussion of one of these issues. Before the evening concludes, we'll do a brief summary of conclusions about ways to move forward.

PETA’s Human Meat Tray Protest at Toronto Slaughterhouse

Bike Reports coming before City Council
Public Works and Infrastructure Committee (PWIC) requested Transportation Services to report at the:
Thur. June 23 meeting on the following bikeway issues:
Developing and implementing the Mayor's bike plan during the current term of Council;
Developing and implementing a continuous separated bike lane network in the downtown during the current term of Council; and
The status of the Bloor-Danforth Environmental Assessment Study
Bloor/Danforth has been the best east-west choice for cyclists since at least 1992. It’s flat, direct, long and free of streetcar tracks. The last Council agreed to a full Environmental Assessment (EA) of a bikeway for the entire 21km of the Bloor/Danforth subway, but it has since stalled.
At the City’s June 23rd PWIC (Public Works and Infrastructure Comittee) meeting, with many bike things crammed into one agenda, the staff report urges this EA scrapped to help pay for the downtown separated bike lane re-workings. We need emails and deputations to strongly support the completion of the EA. For just $200,000, we could paint Bloor bike lanes from High Park to Sherbourne — and wouldn’t that be a great safe ride!

If you can make a 5-minute deputation, phone 416-392-8032. And please show up at the PWIC meeting on the 23rd at City Hall — cyclists need to fill the meeting room.

G20: Lessons Learned, Messages Lost – A Public Forum

A conversation about accountability, public order policing and the true messaging that was lost amid the G20 debacle.
In partnership with the Canadian Labour Congress and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association will be hosting a public forum to discuss where Canada stands in terms of political and policing accountability for the policing at the G20, what was learned, and how to move forward. The forum will also focus on discussing how activists can ensure their messages are heard, and how we can better protect freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly.

An Evening with acclaimed lesbian novelist, playwright, and activist Sarah Schulman in conversation with Now Magazine's Books and Entertainment Editor, Susan G. Cole.

Sarah Schulman, is co-founder of the Lesbian Avengers, the organizers of the first Dyke March, and of MIX NYC, New York's Queer Experimental Film Festival. A member of ACT UP and a principal historian of the AIDS movement, she is also an acclaimed novelist playwright and activist.
Susan G. Cole, writes for Now Magazine in Toronto, and is also a playwright and author. Together they will engage in a conversation about Schulman's writing and activism in the Queer community over the last thirty years.
The conversation will focus on how ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) was effective in forcing governments and societies to change their views and responses to AIDS, and what contemporary activists can learn from this experience about how to be effective and build movements today.
As Co-director of the ACT UP ORAL HISTORY PROJECT Schulman will also show a short sneak preview of Jim Hubbard's new feature film, UNITED IN ANGER:A History of ACT UP which will have its world premiere Winter 2012.

Citizens’ groups fighting to protect natural spaces can be outgunned by “experts,” out-maneuvered by municipal staff, shut out by local media and ignored by politicians. Learn how Liz has been beating the odds and winning environmental victories for her community.
Liz Benneian, President of Oakvillegreen Conservation Association, and one of the founders of Ontario Zero Waste Coalition, is a former journalist and newspaper editor. Since 2004, she has been a full-time, volunteer environmental advocate. Under her leadership Oakvillegreen has successfully waged many campaigns including stopping plans to build an incinerator in Halton, convincing the Province of Ontario to turn 675 acres slated for development into two new conservation areashalting plans to put a paved pathway through a critical migratory bird stopover area, and securing a bylaw to stop developers from clear-cutting trees. During the past two years, Liz has been travelling around the province teaching grassroots groups how to become more effective advocates through Organize To Win seminars.

This "Tricks of the Trade" workshop will cover the basic rules in photography including composition, rule of thirds, when to do total shots vs. close-ups, how to show emotion, what to focus on.... Iven will focus on what works and what doesn't and will evaluate our photographs after a practice session. We are planning 4-6 sessions this summer on a variety of topics (street theatre, photography, guerrilla videos) and hope to continue the series in the fall. REact: Solidarity Sunday

To commemorate the G20 standoff in Parkdale one year ago, the Parkdale Showcase will screen of works of artistic protest. Some videos are interpreting and reacting to the events of Toronto's G20, while other works, screened at past Showcases, are a testament to resistance movements nationally and internationally. The humourous nature of some works divulges a strategy of dissent to authority. Others works directly address trauma. All the works are presented with sensitivity and in a spirit of solidarity with Parkdale as a global community concerned with equity and human rights worldwide.
After the screening, scholar and activist Kate Milberry, PhD, will be responding to the works and discussing the events of last year's G20 in the context of surveillance and her own research on the democratization of technology as a tool and technique for progressive social change.
Dr. Kate Milberry’s research examines the democratization of technology as a tool and technique for progressive social change. Her work focuses on the relationship between social movements and the Internet, in particular, how tech activists’ use and develop free software to achieve broader goals of democracy, social and economic justice, equality and environmental sustainability.
