Recently Toronto Summerworks Theatre Festival received funding cuts totaling around $50 000. There is a suspected link between the timing of the cut and last year’s presentation of Homegrown, a play focused on the Toronto 18. Toronto’s Pride Parade was also threatened with funding cuts because of the presence of signs protesting a human rights violation. With recent changes in federal and municipal governments, the reaction to these two events seems to foreshadow a worrisome shift in the funding climate. 

This month’s Bridge invites you to participate in a constructive conversation about these recent events, asking how do we handle the pressure we may be feeling to self-censor to hold on to our funding? How as individuals and organizations can we support each other more strongly when one of us is under threat? And what responses are currently being organized around these issues?

Last week, city-hired consultants KPMG suggested reducing or eliminating the Community Partnership and Investment Program (CPIP) grants. CPIP funding serves Toronto’s most vulnerable communities, including: youth, women, seniors, racialized people, homeless & low-income people, disabled people, LGBTQ people and many more. Recommendations on whether to make cuts to the city grants programs will be made during a special meeting of Executive Committee on:

It’s time for volunteers, program participants, funders, faith leaders, small businesses & all other supporters of these community programs to Speak Up for Our City! Here’s what you can do:

a)      Register in advance to depute to Executive Committee on July 28, 2011 at 9:30 am at City Hall about the value of programs delivered through CPIP’s grants.  Prepare to speak for 3-5 minutes on the value of the programs you have benefited from & tell your story to city councillors.

Direct Action and Civil Disobedience: Campaigning to Stop the Quarry

Training sessions at Unicamp  -  July 31 – Aug 1

Direct action has played an integral role in most movements for social change, from the civil rights era to the suffragettes, and from forest defense to worker justice movements  and protection of farmland and water sources.

This workshop is for people who are newer to direct action and civil disobedience, and are interested in learning about different kinds of direct action, as well as the basics of when, why and how to strategically integrate direct action into your campaign.   Time will be provided for groups to plan and role play their own actions.

There will be 3 sessions: Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening, and Monday morning.   Each session will be about 2 hours, with the option of extending the time for questions and strategizing.

Participants are encouraged to attend all 3 sessions in order to gain the greatest benefit, but if you can only make it to one session, you’ll still find it to be of great value.

Fees will depend on the number of participants – probably about $10 for one session or $25 for all 3. Sliding scale may be available if we have sufficient registration.

This training is suitable for about age 14 and up. Children may observe from the edges while their parents are participating.

Jessica Bell is a trainer with the Ruckus Society, a lecturer on advocacy at Ryerson University, and the co-founder of Tools for Change, a program that provides skills-based training for groups in Toronto.
