Prisoner's Justice Day Vigil 2011
Wednesday, August 10 · 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Don Jail, 550 Gerrard St. E.
August 10th, 2011 marks the 36th annual Prisoners' Justice Day. Prisoners’ Justice Day began to commemorate the death of Eddie Nalon, who bled to death in the segregation unit of Millhaven prison on August 10, 1974. On the first anniversary of Eddie´s death, prisoners at Millhaven refused to work, went on a one-day hunger strike and held a memorial service, even though it would mean a stint in solitary confinement. On May 21st 1976, another prisoner, Robert Landers, died in the segregation unit at Millhaven. That year on August 10, thousands of prisoners across Canada participated in a one-day hunger strike, while Prison Justice Day Committees were formed in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia to organize community events.
Today, prisoners across the world fast and refuse to work to mark this solemn occasion, while community groups plan events in solidarity with people inside, to call attention to the terrible conditions in prisons, as well as in other carceral spaces like immigration detention and psychiatric facilities.
The vigil will include speakers/performers and an open mic, followed by a candlelight memorial.
ASL interpretaton will be available.

Who's Afraid of Communism? The 21st century capitalist crisis and the Communist solution
Sat. Aug. 13, 2 - 4 p.m.
Parkdale Library Meeting Room, 1303 Queen St. West.
Capitalism is in Crisis. Governments around the world are ruthlessly imposing austerity measures on us, the everyday people. This is an attack on our already deteriorating quality of life, our incomes and our social security! Conditions of poverty are worsening for the everyday people, while those in government and the rich continue to enjoy their increasing wealth. Oppressed people all over are coming together to defend themselves and to fight back against these attacks on their livelihood.
This state of affairs is undoubtedly connected to the workings of the global capitalist economy. We must understand the present economic crisis in order to develop a strategy for opposing this attack on our well-being. Communism has a rich history of people’s struggle against injustice, yet continues to be viewed – by the state and defenders of injustice – as a virus rather than a solution. By looking at some of the challenges, defeats, and victories in the history of Communist struggles, we can draw important lessons for building a Communism for the 21st Century.
We invite those with a fighting spirit to join us in connecting the degradation of everyday peoples’ lives and toward the building of a Communist resistance.
