From the Arab Spring to Global Austerity
How new transnational struggles are shaping Toronto protests
with Jesse Rosenfeld
Wednesday, October 12, 7 pm
150 College Street, Rm 139, Fitzgerald Building
From Athens to London, New York to Toronto, people are rising up in resistance to global austerity measures. Unsurprisingly, activists around the world are drawing from the tactical lessons of the Arab Revolutions, seizing symbolic targets to demand popular democratic control and using online media to mobilize.
The latest wave of mobilization - inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City - is coming to Canada. In Toronto, there's a tremendous opportunity to unite the energies of this new wave of protest with the efforts of established grassroots organizations. Join us for a discussion about how these global struggles are impacting us at home.
JESSE ROSENFELD is a journalist who has covered social struggle in North America, Europe and the Middle East. From 2007 until March 2011, he reported from the Middle East, primarily based in Ramallah and Tel Aviv. Rosenfeld, who covered last year's G20 protests, was recently in London, Athens and New York City and seeing first hand how the protests have been shaped by the global events. He has written for The Nation, The Guardian, Le Monde Diplomatique, Al Jazeera English, The Irish Times, Ha’aretz, Foreign Policy, and Alternet.org, among others.
This event is sponsored by OPIRG-Toronto, www.opirgtoronto.org. Endorsed by The Centre for Social Justice, Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid, Greater Toronto Workers' Assembly, Ontario Coalition Against Poverty, New Socialist Group, No One Is Illegal-Toronto, Toronto Stop the Cuts Network, and Upping the Anti.

Spin
Thursday, October 13 · 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Tranzac Club, Brunswick and Bloor
Award-winning Toronto artist Evalyn Parry takes her audience on an innovative theatrical and musical journey in her tour-de-force performance celebrating the Bicycle. Inspired by the incredible true tale of Annie Londonderry – first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle in 1894 – Parry weaves a web of stories that deftly travel from 19th century women’s emancipation to 21st century consumer culture, from the political to the personal.
Parry’s “co-star” is a vintage bicycle. Suspended on a mechanic’s stand and connected to electronic effects, the bicycle is played – from fenders to spokes to bells – by percussionist Brad Hart, conjuring a unique and astonishing sonic accompaniment to Parry’s captivating SPIN.

Connecting Across Differences for Social Action
2 hour Intro Workshop - morning of Sat. Oct. 15 - Toronto - Facilitated by Henry Wai
Do you experience differences with others as a wall or a doorway in your community or social action? Would you like to hear the productive "Yes" behind a frustrating "No"? Whether we’re engaging with the public, strategizing with allies, persuading decision-makers, or dialoging with opponents, it really helps to have a way to connect – to understand and respect where everyone is coming from. Your ability to be present to others with care, focus, and minimal reactions can make the difference between a breakdown and a breakthrough.
Join us for a practical introduction to the Nonviolent CommunicationTM (NVC) process for clarifying needs and choices and handling conflicts. It is a simple yet transformative process which facilitates productive and empathic dialogue. Around the world, more and more people are using NVC to support everyday peacemaking, empowerment, conflict transformation, healing and more. NVC is practiced in 37 countries in activism, family, workplace, social service, education, mediation, prison, and government settings.

Act on Climate Change, or Ignore It? We'll see you in Court!
Sunday, October 16, 2 p.m.
OISE, 252 Bloor Street West (at St. George Subway)
Our climate Justice Tribunal will test an indictment of the governments, corporations, and people of Canada for climate crimes against Nature and humanity.
We are bombarded by news of global warming and environmental destruction. Yet the world's governments, who will meet November 28 in Durban, South Africa, in another climate ghange conference, are masters of inaction. Canada is called one of the worst carbon-emission offenders. And we, the people of Canada, are we carrying through on our responsibility to restore harmony with nature?
As a participant in our mock trial on October 16, you will compare the conflicting agendas of the government, corporations, and the people of Canada. You will weigh how their and our actions and inaction could make all of us climate criminals.

GMO - Right2Know Rally!
Sunday, October 16, 1 - 5 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St. (at Bathurst subway)
Canadian Organic Growers Toronto and Ruth's Foods are holding a rally against genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As part of Organic Week, October 15-22 and non-GMO month, and in support of the Right2Know March from New York to Washington, D.C., we will 'live stream' speakers from the conclusion of the march in Washington from Percy Schmeiser to Vandana Shiva. Monsanto and other biotech companies have been foisting their genetic engineering technology on an unsuspecting and unwilling public. Dangers to the environment and our health are clear. Despite numerous polls and protests clearly showing the public's support of at least labeling food that contains GMOs, these companies and the politicians that support them need to be told again and again what we want. Let's make this a North America-wide shout out against GMOs and a demand for labeling so people can make the choice for good, safe food. There will be local speakers, a new film on GMOs and music.
Make your voice heard!
