Pack the Court! End "Secret Trials"! Support Mohammad Mahjoub!

Mon./Tues. Feb 20 - 21, 9:30am - 4:00pm
Federal Court, 180 Queen Street, 6th floor, Toronto

No One Is Illegal - Toronto has joined the Justice for Mahjoub Campaign and will be focusing our fight against security certificates in Toronto by supporting Muhammad Mahjoub as he fights to get his security certificate quashed.

Mohammad Zeki Mahjoub was arrested under a "security certificate" in June 2000, over 11 years ago. Under this “security certificate” Mohammad Mahjoub has spent the last 11 years without any charges being laid against him or having access to the "evidence" against him. For over 11 years, Mr. Mahjoub has remained either in jail or on draconian bail conditions without going through a trial or being found guilty. For 11 years, Mr. Mahjoub has lived with the threat of deportation to death or violence looming over his head without access to justice. Security Certificates can only be used against non-citizens, who are given lesser rights to justice, simply on the basis of citizenship.

Tell TTC Commissioners: Don't fire TTC Manager Gary Webster for doing his job!

For the second time in less than a month, 5 TTC commissioners are trying to silence TTC staff to stop them from doing their jobs: giving expert opinions on transit expansion, which happens to contradict the Mayor's call for subways. This time, it appears they are threatening to fire Gary Webster, TTC Chief General Manager.

TTC commissioners Crisanti, Di Giorgio, Kelly, Minnan-Wong, and Palacio have all signed a petition to hold a special TTC meeting on Tuesday February 21 at 2:00pm, closed to the public until 3:00pm. Speak out: Expert staff should not be fired for opposing the Mayor's plans!

1. Attend Tuesday's meeting to show councillors that you want them to focus on building rapid transit, not politics. If you want to speak, register by email togso at ttc.ca or call 416-393-3698.

2. Call or email the commissioners to tell them that firing expert TTC staff will not help our city get moving on Rapid Transit.

Mad like Tesla on Transition Toronto

Where are today's visionary inventors to see us through environmental and resource disaster?
Wed. February 22, 7pm to 9pm
Wallberg Memorial Building, 200 College, Room 116

It is with great pleasure that Post Carbon Toronto and Transition Toronto host an evening with Tyler Hamilton. Award studded journalist, author, adjunct professor, Corporate Knights magazine editor-in-chief, and contributor to MIT's Technology Review. And as if this wasn't enough he writes a must read blog for anyone interested in the latest breaking news in the clean tech sector.http://www.cleanbreak.ca/ The back jacket of his recent book succinctly sums up the situation facing us all. "Climate change. Runaway resource depletion. Life smothering pollution." For the last six years at the Toronto Star Tyler has researched and written about many of the very fine minds that are dedicating their lives and talents to developing solutions to these problems. Somehow he even found time to write a highly engaging book about some of the more interesting and inspirational inventors he met along the way titled 'Mad like Tesla'. So if you're looking for a little break from hearing about the problems, and itching for a night dedicated to some solutions - this is the night for you!

Palestine & the Great Games: @ the Periphery & in the Centre

Friday, February 24 @ 7:00 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St. (Just across from Bathurst Subway Stn)

In this wide ranging and far reaching examination of the role of Palestine in the Great Games, the metaphor for grand geopolitical strategy involving nations and peoples first introduced by Zbigniew Brzezinski, in his book, The Grand Chessboard, author and journalist Eric Walberg paints a broad canvas putting Palestine both at the centre and the periphery of 100 years of modern and postmodern colonialism. Drawn from his most recent book, Postmodern Imperialism: Geopolitics and the Great Game, Walberg shows how Palestine, despite its helplessness, is in a sense the most powerful player in the Great Games and its fate holds the key to the endgame. Toxic Trespass - Film Screening

Friday, February 24, 6 - 8:30 pm

Centre for Social Innovation 215 Spadina Ave. Suite 120 (1st floor), Wheelchair accessible, PWYC (Pay What You Can)

In this film, intrepid filmmaker Barri Cohen launches an investigation into the effects of the chemical soup around us. She starts with her 10-year-old daughter, whose blood carries carcinogens like benzene and the long-banned DDT. Then, Cohen heads out to Windsor and Sarnia: Canadian toxic hotspots, with startling clusters of deadly diseases. The filmmaker journeys into toxic nightmares all too common in industrialized countries. She meets passionate activists working for positive change, along with doctors and scientists who see evidence of links between environmental pollution and health problems. And she learns how quickly barriers can go up sometimes, when authorities are questioned about the connection between toxins and serious health problems. This film is essential viewing for anyone concerned about the effects of pollutants on our – and our children’s – very DNA.
