Toronto Food Planning Council Monthly Meeting

Spring has sprung and this month's TFPC meeting is all about growing food in the city. To link us to the global urban agriculture movement, will have presentations from Chris Wong and Eliane Howarth from Cultivate Toronto (formerly Young Urban Farmers CSA) on their recent urban agriculture tours to Nairobi and South Africa. Closer to home, we will hear about several new urban agriculture initiatives, and we will have updates on the GrowTO action planning session and the Urban Agriculture Summit planned for August 2012. This month's Local Food Hero is Fresh City Farm. Their team will be at the meeting to tell us about their work and plans for the season. Also on the agenda: important updates on the Greater Golden Horseshoe Farm and Food Action Plan and the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food's visit to Toronto in May. All welcome.

An amalgamation of some of the most cruel elements of previous bills, C-31 is a drastic and draconian attack on immigrants that introduces measures that jail refugees, establishes an unjust two-tier asylum system, and ends Permanent Residence in Canada as we know it. We cannot let this happen.

Enbridge Inc. is planning to build a pipeline for heavy crude oil from the Alberta tar sands across B.C. to the coast of the pristine Great Bear Rainforest. The proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline project would put one of our planet's most ecologically-sensitive and intact marine ecosystems at risk for a catastrophic oil spill through increased mega tanker traffic. The International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) teamed up with Pacific Wild, the Gitga'at First Nation of B.C., LightHawk, TidesCanada, Save our Seas Foundation, Sierra Club BC, and the Dogwood Initiative to carry out a Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. The 14-day expedition to the Great Bear Rainforest called upon 7 world-renowned photographers and 3 videographers to thoroughly document the region's landscapes, wildlife and culture. The RAVE provided media support to the First Nations and environmental groups seeking to stop the proposed Enbridge Gateway pipeline project (and thus expansion of the tar sands). Rally and Community BBQ to Save the School House Shelter

The School House was first opened in the 1970s, it is a 55 (paid) bed facility for men in the downtown east end of Toronto. It was one of the first shelters in Canada to operate from a harm reduction perspective, and remains one of the very few harm reduction focused shelters in this city. The City is planning to close down this shelter, meaning that all of these beds will be lost on top of the hundreds of shelter beds we have already lost in the downtown east. This comes at a time when most shelters are at capacity and when we face deepening housing crisis. There are 79 000 households on the waiting list for social housing in Toronto, a list that is estimated to be at least a decade long. The City of Toronto has just voted to sell off close to 60 social housing units with plans to sell-off more. Most poor people are priced out of the private market with the average bachelor apartment ranging around $777 a month while the base amount for welfare is only $599. Schoolhouse is a vital service in our neighborhood that needs to be defended! Join OCAP, the Downtown East Committee and allies on Saturday, April 14th for free food and music, and to rally for the services we need and plan to defend.

The Polar Explorer: From the makers of the award-winning The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning, comes an all new documentary exploring the effects of climate change in our polar regions. Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, Canada’s Northwest Passage was first navigated by Norwegian Roald Amundsen in 1903-1906, a true polar explorer; he was the first man to reach the South Pole as well. Until 2009, the Arctic pack ice prevented regular marine passage throughout most of the year, but climate change has reduced this ice, making the waterways more navigable. The Polar Explorer is a one-hour documentary that explores the Passage on a three-week scientific expedition taking place on the aptly named icebreaker, the Amundsen.
The Antarctica Challenge: A Global Warning (52 minutes): This documentary goes to the source of the climate change crisis: Antarctica. Here we explore first-hand the environmental challenges facing that frozen continent and, by extension, the world. This film profiles the brave scientists working at Vernadsky Station and with the British Antarctic Survey as they concentrate their efforts, living in often harsh and life-threatening conditions in their heroic attempt to save the world. The documentary provides support interviews from polar experts and research scientists around the world as well as rare footage of wildlife including penguins in their hatching season. The film reports on the new phenomenon of suicide among penguins, the imminent rise of the world’s sea level due to ice melting, startling new data on the ozone hole and how new vegetation is now growing in the world’s largest desert.

However, in McGuinty’s reckless plan to balance Ontario’s books by putting more people out of work and destroying the social safety net, he refuses to roll-back corporate tax cuts that are starving the province of billions of dollars that could be better used to create new jobs and help tens of thousands of struggling Ontario families to get back on their feet.
