To all women!

For every woman who gave up her figure for her family, the last piece of pie for her child (or husband), peace and quiet for pieces of lego imbedded painfully somewhere in her foot; for every mother who put herself last every time a child needed to come first, gave up sleep for sleepless or sick child, sleeping in on the weekend for a child who needed a ride to work; for every person who has been birth, loved, nurtured and launched by a loving mother, today is the day to say thank you. So, to my dear mother, my sister and sister-in-law, my soon-to-be-a-mother daughter-in-law, my niece, my friends and female family members - today is a day to celebrate who you are. Don't take any sh*t from anybody! Happy Mother's Day! - Suzanne Elston

Mother's Day Proclamation - 1870
"Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!.... We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

Big Boys Gone Bananas
90 min. documentary, Sweden

Mon. May 14 – Fri. May 18
Bloor Cinema (Bloor east of Bathurst)

Fredrik Gertten’s documentary Bananas!, chronicling a lawsuit against controversial food giant Dole, was set to premiere at the 2009 Los Angeles Film Festival. Dole responded with an aggressive media and public relations campaign to quash the film’s release and discredit the reputation of the filmmakers. The filmmaking team behind Bananas! refused to be bullied, filing a counter-suit and launching their own media strategy. Their point was that no one suing them had even seen the film! A true documentarian, Gertten picks up his camera again to capture his fight for free speech. Big Boys Gone Bananas! is an in-depth case study of an independent filmmaker’s David and Goliath battle with a corporate machine whose financial and political influence must be exposed.

Cross-Province Town Hall Meetings: Actions Launched to Protect Local Access to Health Care, Across Ontario

Real Alternatives to the New Austerity Agenda - 19th Annual Free Public Forum

Monday, May 14th, 1 to 3 pm
Toronto City Hall, Council Chamber, 100 Queen Street West @ Nathan Phillips Square
With:
- Jim Stanford, straight-talking economist, educator, author of Economics for Everyone, founder of the Progressive Economics Forum, commentator for CBC – TV’s “The Bottom Line”, columnist for The Globe and Mail
 - John Sewell, former Mayor of Toronto, founder of Citizens for Local Democracy, advocate for public accountability in government, spokesperson for the new citizens’ group Economic Inequality http://www.economicinequality.ca
 - Natalie Mehra, public health care advocate, Director of the Ontario Health Coalition, Recipient of the 2012 Alexander Gorlick Humanitarian Award

The Ontario budget for health care is harsher than even the most radical advocates for cutbacks predicted. After years of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthiest, the Ontario government is trying to resolve its deficit on the backs of the sick and the elderly. There are alternatives. All residents who are concerned about protecting local access to care are asked to come out and join the discussion, share your experiences and ideas and help to forge the fight-back campaign to save our local health services.

From Protest to Resistance: West Germany’s Red Army Faction in the 1970s and 1980s

Monday, 14 May, 6 - 8 pm
OISE, 252 Bloor St. West, Rm 5230

The Red Army Faction was one of the best known, and most vilified, urban guerilla organizations of the Cold War period. Emerging from West Germany’s radical student movement in the 1960s, the RAF bombed U.S. military bases and police stations, carried out kidnappings and bank robberies, and assassinated financial, military, and government targets. Their last attack in 1993 actually demolished a new prison before it could be opened, doing almost $100 million in damage and postponing its operation by four years. The RAF was never fully defeated, but rather opted to unilaterally de-escalate and then disband following the changes in the global balance of power in the 1990s. Join us on May 14 for a discussion with K. Kersplebedeb about the history of the RAF and other West German guerilla groups, the ongoing repression targeting former guerillas, and why this is relevant to radicals today.

Organized by PRAC and the RSM. Sponsored by Toronto Anarchist Black Cross, Upping the Anti

LET THEM STAY!
Celebrate International Day for Conscientious Objection by calling on the government to rescind Operational Bulletin 202

Dear supporters of U.S. war resisters in Canada, You haven't heard from us at the War Resisters Support Campaign recently, but the resisters are still here, living lives of uncertainty, though also filled with the joys of daily living and working. Our work continues. We need your help!

Tuesday, May 15 is the International Day for Conscientious Objection. This is the day we have chosen to revitalize the impact of our campaign, and to press for the elimination of Immigration Minister Kenney's Operational Bulletin 202. This bulletin, which asks immigration officers to refer the cases of all American war resisters to their superior officers, has effectively stopped the progress of resisters to resident's status in Canada, even when the courts have ruled in their favour. We need you, and anyone else you can recruit to help, to email Immigration Minister Jason Kenney and your MP on May 15. At this link http://resisters.ca , you can do this in one step! It will also go to the relevant Opposition Leaders and critics. You may edit and personalize the letter if you wish.

Thanks so much for your help on this day, and for all of the work you have done for war resisters.

Mapping TOenviro - Where we are, where we need to go with TEA (Toronto Environmental Alliance)

Wed. May 16, 7 p.m.
Revival, 783 College St.
Free

It's been almost a year and a half since the current council was sworn into office, and in that time significant changes have happened on the environmental front. Important environmental programs and services were under unprecedented threat. But thanks to the work of our team, TEA members, and our allies, we succeeded in stopping proposed cuts to those programs and services in January. Then, we witnessed a historic transit victory that will bring efficient, rapid transit to Toronto sooner rather than later. None of this would have been possible without the work and support of Torontonians like you.

It's important to reflect on what this success means for us as community organizers and advocates for the environment, and to begin planning how to move beyond defending what we have toward building something better.

Written by Heathcote Williams in 1991, this neo-apocalyptic sci-fi poem critically examines the modern world’s obsession with the automobile, and serves as the basis for a darkly comedic experiment that arrives at the logical conclusion of a fatally motorized society. Framed from the point of view of an alien visitor quietly observing the strange behaviour of Earth’s inhabitants as it tries to decipher whom the dominant species is – man, or machine – Williams’ cynical prognosis for the planet’s future holds as much relevance today as it did over two decades ago.

LAL will be celebrating their 4th LP release

Friday, May 18th
The Garrison, 1197 Dundas W (at Ossington)

LAL is a band, but not only a band - they are a music making magical mushroom, the visible flowering part of a much larger organism, connected with very fine but infinitely resilient roots. Sydney White speaks on Fukushima

Sat. May 19, 7 p.m.
Conspiracy Culture store, 1696 Queen W. (near Ronces)
Rsvp as space is limited: 416 916 1696

I will be speaking on Fukushima. I will be exposing the lies about this event. The media is not telling you the truth about how to help yourself under the nuclear contamination. When I was at the UN in the late 50's, at 18 years of age, they gave us ingredients, a recipe that would prevent the cesium and strontium from entering our bones. Also I will be disclosing "all the accidents" that we do not know about.
