Going in Circles: Mapping Environmental Progress at City Hall
In February 2010, TEA (Toronto Environmental Alliance) released six environmental priorities - endorsed by over 40 community groups - that set a course for Toronto’s City Council to build a greener city for all. The good news is that we’re still pointed in the right direction to build a greener city. The bad news is that we’ve mostly been travelling in circles, and we’ve done very little to solve the important environmental problems facing Toronto.

Save The School House Shelter - Mass Delegation To City Council

City Hall (Bay and Queen),
Free pancake breakfast served from 8:30 AM
The City is moving to close down the School House shelter on George St, a 55 bed facility that has provided shelter in this community for decades. It is one of the few 'wet' shelters in Toronto and those who stay there may have a drink. It has saved lives over the years.
OCAP, the Downtown East Committee of Stop the Cuts and others in the community are challenging this decision. We went to the last meeting of the Community Development and Recreation Committee of City Council and hostel services staff were instructed to bring back a full report on the closing of the School House. On May 23, that report will be presented and we will be there to demand that this shelter be kept open. We are going before the Committee and giving them a chance to put this matter right but, should they not do so, we shall mobilize in the community to prevent them closing the School House. Please come out on the 23rd and show your support.

The Twelve Year Tour - Mohammad Mahjoub on speaking tour

For almost twelve long years, Mohammad Mahjoub, a torture survivor, has been detained without charge in Canada. He was held for lengthy periods in solitary confinement and later under house arrest. All on the basis of secret information which the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has admitted was likely obtained under torture. Now, for the first time in twelve years, Mr. Mahjoub is permitted to travel outside Toronto.
Mr. Mahjoub is one of five Muslim men who have been struggling for justice in Canada against so-called security certificates. Security certificates allow the government to indefinitely detain or deport people on the basis of their profile. He will tell his story in a six-city speaking tour, as the Justice for Mahjoub Network gears up for a day of protest to mark the 12th anniversary of his arrest on June 26th.

Equal Pay for Equal Work! Call for Action. Rally against migrant worker wage cuts!

The Conservative government has given employers in Canada more rein to exploit migrants. Employers can now pay migrant workers 15% below the average wage. This is an outrage! To discriminate on wages simply on the basis of nationality is unfair. Considering that most migrant workers are people of colour, this wage cut is simply racist.
The Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, a community-labour alliance of over 40 organizations, will be demonstrating at MP Joe Oliver (Cabinet Minister for Toronto)'s office on May 24th.
Migrant Workers Alliance for Change's demands:
- A RIGHT TO LANDING STATUS be granted upon arrival for migrant workers. They must not be tied to one employer, be required to live in their employer’s home, or be subject to further medical examination;
- A RIGHT TO EQUAL ACCESS for all social programs, including Employment Insurance, health care, settlement services, social services and Workers’ Compensation;
- A RIGHT TO A FAIR APPEAL PROCESS for migrant workers prior to a pre-removal order, and a stop to deportations until this process is in place;
- A RIGHT TO FULL PROTECTION UNDER THE PROVINCIAL EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS ACT AND REGULATIONS currently enjoyed by Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents, including NO FEES for any work placement.
- Immediately implement a NATIONAL REGULARIZATION PROGRAM granting permanent immigration status for all non-residents living in Canada.

SlutWalk Toronto began as a small idea in 2011 to fight back against victim-blaming and slut-shaming around sexual violence. We were galvanized into action and took our name from a Toronto Police officer who referred to women and survivors of sexual assault as "sluts" and suggested women 'dressing like sluts' were inviting their own victimization.
The prevalence of this attitude in our culture at large drew many to this cause to end blaming victims of sexual violence, and judging peoples' worth by their bodies and what they do with them. In the last year, this fight has spread to over 200 cities around the world, where independent organizers have organized locally-driven SlutWalks and SlutWalk-inspired events. SlutWalk started, and is still going, because we and so many others around the world have had enough.
We invite you to join us as we take up space and fight for our right to live free of violence, victim-blaming and sex-shaming. We invite people of all gender expressions and orientations, all walks of life, levels of employment and education, all races, ages, abilities, and backgrounds, from all points of this city and elsewhere to come as you are, dressed as you feel comfortable.

Egypt: The Revolution Continues...

Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham St. (Bloor and Bathurst)
A photo exhibit exploring the ongoing story of the Egyptian revolution through the lens of journalist, Ali Mustafa. The photographer lived in Cairo from September 2011 to March 2012, covering many of the key political events in the country since the ouster of former dictator Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. The photos in the exhibit are for sale as part of a charity fundraiser. All proceeds will be donated to OCAP (Ontario Coalition Against Poverty).
Ali Mustafa is a writer and multimedia journalist. His work has appeared in many alternative sites and publications, including Znet, The New York Times eXaminer, Electronic Intifada, rabble.ca, and The Bullet. He recently returned to Canada from the Middle East where he spent a year covering the Egyptian revolution, Israel/Palestine conflict, and the wider region. Edible Weed Walk

Many of the weeds we pull out of our gardens or walk by in parks are good to eat. Herbalist Danette Steele will teach participants what types of weeds are edible on this weed walk, which will take us through Ben Nobleman Park and Cedarvale ravine. Following the walk, we will have a weed tasting at our Harvest Table.

Political Writing / Rally Organizing 101
Sunday May 27, 10am – 1pm OR 3pm - 6pm. (We are running the same workshop back-to-back.)

For many activists, writing induces more anxiety than all other work. As a result, we often avoid it altogether. This pattern produces organizational challenges—many activist groups have only one or two regular writers—but the more significant consequences are longer-term: for all its frustrations, writing makes us clearer thinkers and, by extension, better activists. In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to think carefully about the writing process itself. Participants will also be introduced to effective methods for improvement, as well as an introduction to (alternative) publishing.
Trainer: Clare O'Connor is a Toronto-based activist and writer.

Town Hall for Political Queers in Toronto

Calling all Political Queers! This year’s theme for Toronto Pride is “Celebrate and Demonstrate.” Over the last few years, many political groups have fought hard to maintain the visibility and inclusion of political groups and messaging in the parade. From the Pride Coalition for Free Speech to Blockorama’s struggle for space to the attempted ban of QuAIA from the parade, queer activists, political organizers and allies have come together to keep Pride political.
The theme, “Celebrate and Demonstrate” is a great opportunity to put politics front and centre, but there’s also a risk that the corporate interests at Pride will co-opt that messaging, and invite Toronto to “Celebrate and Demonstrate your love for TD.” We need to make sure that political messaging stays at the forefront of Pride this year, so a small coalition of political queer groups in Toronto have called for a Town Hall meeting to come up with a common message we can use to increase political visibility at Pride this year.
Bring your friends, dates, chosen (and un-chosen) family, and anyone else you think might be interested. We hope you can join us!

Bells on Bloor 2012

Meet at High Park (Bloor St. entrance) and ride en masse to Queen's Park
Join 1000's of cyclists on the 6th Annual Bells on Bloor Ride!
At Queens Park we'll converge with Bells on Danforth and Bells on Yonge to join the Cycle & Sole community rally for safer ON roads.
All afternoon we'll celebrate and advocate for bicycle and pedestrian safety. We're asking for Bike Lanes on Bloor and for slower speed limits..
In 2013, the City will re-pave Bloor from Dundas W. to Ossington. Let's ensure they include safe bicycle passage, which would likely mean bike lanes. Bloor St. is one of Toronto's favoured bike routes because it is long, flat and has no streetcar tracks. But it also has one of the highest car/bike collision rates in the city. Let's make it safe for all road users. Please call your City Councillor today!
