The Island President

Till June 28
Bloor Cinema (at Bathurst)

Winner of the People’s Choice Award at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, The Island President chronicles the efforts of then-President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, in his quest for the literal survival of his country. After bringing democracy to the Maldives for the first time in 30 years, Nasheed tackles global warming that threatens his country of 1,200 islands. As the lowest-lying country in the world, any significant rise in global water levels could completely wipe out the Maldives. Having unprecedented access, director Jon Shenk follows Nasheed as he leads a crusade with global leaders and top-level corporations. The film follows Nasheed in his first year in office and to the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit where he facilitates the first agreement by the United States, China and India to reduce carbon emissions. An informative, provocative and inspiring story

Spine Walk

Mon. June 25, 6-7pm
Free

Toronto performance artist Cara Spooner creates a participatory “embodied audio walk” along soon-to-be pedestrianized John Street. Participants will listen on headphones as they walk from John Street’s sacrum (Front St) to its head (Grange). Other cues, movement instructions, narrations and sound scores will accompany the tour. Themes will be critiques of leisure, entertainment, amusement and distraction. The project personifies the street in an attempt to create empathy between the walkers and the physical infrastructure, social codes, movement, others using the street as well as urban nature elements.

Long after the scheduled walks are complete, the audio tour will continue to be available for download and self-guided free tours at www.goethe.de/toronto

Part of the Goethe-Institut's focus City & Climate. http://www.goethe.de/ins/ca/tor/ver/en8783870v.htm

Twelve Years Too Many!
Justice Not Fear | March with Mahjoub

Tues. June 26, noon
Meet at CSIS Offices (277 Front Street West)
March to Department of Justice & Federal Court House

https://www.facebook.com/events/312253422192348/

Mohammad Mahjoub, a torture survivor and refugee from Egypt, was arrested on June 26th 2000 and has been detained without charge in Canada ever since. That makes TWELVE YEARS TOO MANY. He was held for lengthy periods in solitary confinement and later under house arrest. All of this is on the basis of secret information which the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has admitted was likely obtained under torture. March with Mahjoub on the twelfth anniversary of his arrest.

Mr. Mahjoub is one of five Muslim men (the Secret Trial 5) who have been struggling for justice in Canada against so-called security certificates. Security certificates allow the government to indefinitely detain or deport people on the basis of their profile. Join us on June 26th to demand immediate liberation for Mr. Mahjoub and other two men still held on security certificates. Demand justice, apology, reparations and citizenship for all five and accountability for all officials responsible for injustices against these men. Join us for a fun-filled demonstration to end anti-immigrant racist fear!

Save The School House Shelter: Mass Delegation to City Council (part 2)

Tuesday, June 26th
Toronto City Hall (100 Queen St. West)

8:30am: Free Breakfast and Coffee in front of City Hall
9:00am: Delegation to Committee Room 1

The City is moving to close down the School House shelter on George St, a 55 bed men's harm reduction facility that has provided shelter in the Toronto Downtown East community for decades. It is one of the few 'wet' shelters in Toronto, and those who stay there may have a drink. It has saved lives over the years.

OCAP, the Downtown East Committee of Stop the Cuts, the Harm Reduction Alliance and others in the community are challenging this decision. We have gone to the last two meetings of the City’s Community Development and Recreation Committee and continue to force this issue in to the light of day. After unnecessary delay and some under handed tactics, the issue is coming to the Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 26th once and for all. We need everyone to join us on this day in a mass delegation to show our strength and support that the School House shelter remain open and operating in the Downtown East!

*Email/Call Local Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam to tell her you want to keep the School House shelter open and operating in the community: councillor_wongtam at toronto.ca / Phone: 416-392-7903

*Sign the On-Line Petition: http://www.petitiononlinecanada.com/petition/save-the-school-house-harm-reduction-shelter/834

Palestinian Cinema presents:
Divine Intervention (2002)

Wednesday, June 27 @ 7 pm
Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (Bloor and Bathurst)

Divine Intervention (2002) directed by Elia Suleiman is subtitled Chronicle of Love and Pain and can be seen as a continuation of his earlier work, Chronicle of a Disappearance, his first feature film from 1996 (and shown at Beit Zatoun in February) . In both he presents his wry and sardonic witnessing of life of Palestinians on either side of the Green Line. Divine Intervention can be described as a surreal black comedy. The film consists largely of a series of brief interconnected sketches. The director as the character E.S. is the film's silent, expressionless protagonist in an iconic and powerfully moving performance which has been compared to the work of Buster Keaton or Jacques Tati. The film was awarded the Jury Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival as well as the prize by the International Federation of Film Critics and Best Foreign Film at the European Awards in Rome.

No Diesel Trains - Metrolinx Electrification Meeting

With the Clean Train Coalition and MPP Jonah Shein and MP Andrew Cash

Wednesday June 27, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Lithuanian House, 1573 Bloor St West

Metrolinx has been saying they will start with diesel trains on the Air Rail Link, and then go to electric trains at some point in the future. That’s not good enough. We need to make sure that our voices are heard; build it right the first time!

Last week, the World Health Organization declared the diesel engine exhaust is a level one carcinogen, in the same category as asbestos, arsenic, cigarette smoke and mustard gas, and that it does cause lung cancer in humans. This finding makes it even more clear that McGuinty’s plan to run diesel trains through our neighbourhoods, past schools, daycares, and long-term care homes is shortsighted and will have serious implications for seniors and children in our community.

In May, MPP Jonah Schein, introduced a private members bill to ensure that any passenger railway system established between the airport and Toronto is not powered by diesel fuel. This bill will come to second reading as early as September, so we will need to keep the pressure up during the summer! Please email Dalton McGuinty at dmcguinty.mpp.co at liberal.ola.orgto let him know you are concerned about running diesel trains in our communities, especially in light of this announcement.

Unemployed Workers and Migrant Workers targeted - Info Picket

Wednesday June 27, 11:30 am
25 St. Clair Avenue East (Outside of the Service Canada, Citizenship & Immigration Canada offices)

The recently passed Omnibus Bill contained drastic changes to Employment Insurance and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. In particular, unemployed workers and migrant workers will be forced into lower wages. These aggressive measures are part of an ongoing "flexible labour" agenda from the Harper government - a race to the bottom where workers continue to be squeezed more and more. The economic crisis has left working people more vulnerable than ever and these changes will make things worse. We want Parliament to fix EI by improving eligibility and increasing duration of benefits, and stop letting employers get away with taking advantage of migrant workers.

Meetings can be inspiring, useless, or somewhere in between. The quality of a meeting depends a lot on good facilitation. In this course, you'll practice some steps, tools, techniques and approaches that can help you effectively facilitate meetings. Opportunity will be given for some participants to receive feedback on your facilitation technique.

National Stop Harper Day!

Sunday, 1 July, noon - 11 pm

Everywhere in Canada

Traditionally, July 1st is a day known as "Canada day" by Canadians across the country. This year however, that all changes, In most cities across Canada July 1st 2012 will now be known as National Stop Harper Day. One only needs to mention Steven Harper in public and his unpopularity with Canadians becomes very apparent. Harper's general dislike isn't without merit, in fact the list of reasons is too large to fit in a regular conversation and expands daily.

The "in and out" scandal, lying about voter suppression, the F-35 debacle, muzzling scientists, opposition to environmental groups, union breaking, the tar sands… the list goes on and on. Sadly, most Canadians are only now beginning to realize that this is just the tip of the iceberg for the "Harper Government", formally known as the Canadian government.

One of his largest recent human-rights offences is the attempted implementation of Bill C-10, the Omnibus crime bill. (http://ccla.org/omnibus-crime-bill-c-10/) Currently, it is being criticized by the Supreme Court of Canada, as many of its components are considered cruel and unusual punishment.

With Harpers recent unwillingness to celebrate the 30th birthday of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, his message becomes more apparent. What will be left of the Canada we used to know. We've become little more than the great black oil stain on the top of America.

So instead of celebrating Canada Day 2012, join Canadians as they take to the streets in an effort to take our Canada back!

Our voice is unified, our demands are clear. The people of Canada firstly demand fair elections, and a royal commission into the level of vote fraud in the previous election. Once the fraud is proven, we demand that all laws passed by the illegitimate Harper government be rescinded. Most of all we the Canadian people demand justice for the crimes committed by the current government, all those responsible. We demand they face the full extent of the law for their crimes.

As this event is held on a day of national pride, where Canadians will already be wearing red and waving Canadian flags, the Canadian peaceful revolution will be known as the Red Revolution. Let’s paint the country red, in the name of peace!
