Shrine Circus Protest

June 29 - July 8 - daily, one hour before each performance
Woodbine Center, 500 Rexdale Blvd @ Hwy 27

Shrine Circuses have deplorable records of cruelty to animals, serious violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, and animal attacks resulting in injury and even death. Elephants used by Shriners have rampaged, killing trainers and injuring children. Although many successful charitable organizations never use circus fundraisers, about 150 of Shrine's 191 temples host annual circuses. These circuses raise funds for the temples' administrative costs, not for the Shriners children's hospitals.

Animals in circuses are beaten to make them perform tricks on command. If they do not perform properly, they are beaten some more. In cases where they snap and either run amok or attack someone, they are beaten again. Check out http://www.circuses.com/ for more information.

The film follows this deeply political, radical and committed group as they resist gentrification, bring vitality to forgotten urban spaces, protest against war and neoliberalism, and build community.

Stop the Sludge! Honour the Treaties!
Public info night featuring speakers from Six Nations and James Cooke of citizen groups Stop the Waste Park and the Southgate Public Interest Research Group.

Tuesday July 3, 7 p.m.
OISE, Room 5260, 252 Bloor Street West (Closest subway stop: St. George Station)

How would you like to eat food that was fertilized with hazardous human waste? What if that same waste leaks into our local rivers? The April 28th Coalition invites you to learn about the unfolding events and struggles against a dangerous project to build a new waste processing ('sludge') plant at the headwaters of the Grand River on Six Nations territory, as well as resistance to this project from those at the frontline of a struggle concretely linking environmental jsutice and Indigenous sovereignty. What is happening in Dundalk is the realization of the spirit of the Two-Row Wampum. Residents of Dundalk as well as Six Nations land defenders are maintaining a blockade, erected in early April, against a sewage sludge processing plant. With vast community support, they are calling for governments and corporations to respect the treaties and Six Nations’ sovereignty over the territory.

From the company behind the smash hit ‘Love is a Poverty You Can Sell’ and the critically acclaimed ‘Marat/Sade’, comes a visceral adaptation of legendary Greek tragedy ‘Antigone’ for a politically divided world.
