Why Should I Care? Canadian Media - Fair and Balanced?

It is the media's role to hold governments accountable. A strong, independent media gives us the information we need to make informed political decisions. However, the effectiveness of Canadian media is often criticized. Some believe our media focuses more on politics than policy - trying to shape our opinions, rather than simply giving us the information we need to make up our own minds.
Is this a fair charge? Samara, a charitable organization focusing on politics and public engagement, wanted to find out. Samara recently analyzed Canadian media coverage of two big political stories from last fall. They collected articles concerning three pieces of the federal government’s legislative agenda (the omnibus crime bill, the end of the long gun registry and the termination of the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly) and the Occupy Movement protests.

Canada's tar sands are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting the crude oil called bitumen from underneath unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialized effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate. It's an extraordinary spectacle, whose scope can only be understood from far above. In a hypnotic flight of image and sound, one machine's perspective upon the choreography of others, suggests a dehumanized world where petroleum's power is supreme.

Fair Start - Save the Community Start-up and Maintenance Benefit

The Ontario government has cut the Community Start-Up & Maintenance Benefit. This benefit has helped tens of thousands of people on Ontario Works and ODSP to secure and maintain their housing. It will no longer be available as of January 2013. This is a CUT to social assistance rates which WE CANNOT AFFORD. These cuts WILL lead to increased hardship and homelessness. Come and discuss how we can work together to fight this cut and help combat poverty in our community.

Greek Socialist Speaks about anti-austerity fight

Based in Athens, Michael is a leader of OKDE-Spartakos (Organization of Communist Internationalists in Greece), Greek section of the Fourth International, and of ANTARSYA, the revolutionary electoral coalition. He is editor of the OKDE magazine Spartakos, an organizer of the annual Athens anti-racism festival, and is involved in the 'social kitchens' of the Athens anti-poverty movement. For weeks in 2011 he participated in the Occupation of Syntagma (parliament) Square. Michael will discuss the post-June 17 election situation, workers' resistence to the capitalist austerity drive, and opposition to the fascist Golden Dawn party. An open Q & A, and discussion period will follow the presentation.

Hands off the School House shelter
Rally, Free Meal, and March to Save the School House

The City is determined to close down the 55 bed School House wet shelter on George Street. Already most of those staying there have been forced out and much needed shelter beds are sitting empty.
Local City Councillor, Kristyn Wong Tam, and fellow councillors on the Community and Recreation Committee, have led efforts to put a lock on the door of the School House shelter. They claim that this is not a cut and want us to believe that they will spend the money they save by closing School House on new ‘housing initiatives’. We know better. This is a huge cut to a vital service in the midst of a crisis - the waiting list for Toronto Housing is 10 years long, shelters are already overcrowded, and people's health and lives are on the line.
Closing School House is not about saving money or reallocating resources. The truth is that decisions like this are made to benefit rich developers who are moving in on the Downtown East neighborhood. First the shelters close and then the condos go up. This can’t be allowed to happen. We can’t lose this shelter and we have to fight for it to stay open. This is the place where we draw a line.
When the last resident is forced out of the School House, OCAP is ready to mobilize the community to take it back. We are preparing to occupy it, keep it open. Our march on August 23rd, will be about building our strength and showing those who want to clear poor and homeless people out of this neighbourhood that they can expect a fight. Help us draw a line and save the School House!

He is the author of the acclaimed Amazon #1 best-seller The World Peace Diet, a recipient of the Peace Abbey's Courage of Conscience Award, and the creator of several wellness training programs. His Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, focused on educating intuition and altruism in adults, and he has taught college courses in creativity, humanities, mythology, religion, and philosophy.
