Aamjiwnaang Blockade and Idle No More
Mon. Jan. 21, 7 p.m.
Quaker House, 60 Lowther ave.
Vanessa Gray speaks on Aamjiwnaang and Idle No More. Aamjiwnaang has been described as the most toxic place in North America. Activists on this reserve near Sarnia, surrounded by Chemical Valley are taking on the industry’s giants to fight for their community’s future. It’s a fight for all of our future. For clean air, and water we can drink. For community values over corporate profit-making. Learn about the daily realities of life in Aamjiwnaang and hear the story of the blockade of the CN rail line that lasted for 13 days. We'll be screening a 20 minute documentary on Aamjiwnaang's toxic exposure called Cloudmakers - the filmmaker, Rachel Deutsch will be present - it's the premiere! And we'll start by honouring Martin Luther King Jr. - he would have been 84.

Say No to the Darlington Rebuild!
Volunteers wanted to help distribute leaflets http://cleanairalliance.org/files/power-to-choose.pdf in Toronto's NDP ridings. We aim to give the leader of the NDP Andrea Horwath the mandate from her electorate to actively oppose the Darlington rebuild - a massive $35 billion boondoogle already underway, with full support from the provincial liberals and conservatives, and nary a peep from the NDP with the exception of asking for more study. If you can spare a few hours to help get them out, order here: http://www.cleanairalliance.org/get_involved_order_pamphlets

Dear Kimbery: an Evening to Send Letters to Kimberly Rivera in Jail
Wed. Jan. 23, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Kimberly Rivera, Iraq War Resister, lost her appeal to stay in Canada on compassionate grounds and was immediately arrested upon returning to the United States. She is now in jail, separated from her family. Let's come together to write to Kimberly and express our appreciation for her bravery as an Iraq War Resister, and to offer our support during this time. It might also be a good time to write the Minister of Immigration a very different kind of letter in support of Iraq War Resisters and Canada's democracy. For those who cannot attend the event, we will also invite everyone on that day to create and mail Kim their own messages across the country.

We will march through Toronto’s Downtown East neighborhood where government policies have caused a desperate lack of housing and years of grossly inadequate welfare and disability rates have created massive homelessness and poverty. We will then join up with dozens of unions and social movements whose members are gathering in Allan Gardens and march on the Liberal Convention.
