TABS On Toronto Launched!
The Toronto Public Space Initiative has launched a brand new civic engagement tool called TABS On Toronto that will let residents, media, staff, and organizations sign up for email alerts from City Council based on their keyword preferences. For example, a user can type into the system the name of their local street, or a policy issue of interest to them. Whenever that word comes up on a Council agenda item or background document they will get an automatic email from the system informing them of the upcoming Council meeting. Resident's will have an easier time keeping informed of what government is doing, never missing a beat, and getting their full 7 days statutory notice. Check it out and sign up for particular alerts:

Recycling Plus Depot Opens
Last Friday, The Beer Store launched its first Recycling Plus depot near Lansdowne and Dupont to collect beer, wine and spirit empties as well as electronic-waste, paint and batteries. Unfortunately, most companies and producers in Ontario have done the bare minimum in terms of taking responsibility for the products and packaging they create. It's clear that tougher Provincial regulation is needed if we want to see more comprehensive in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs like this one. Residents can also drop off all types of special waste at City Depots, have e-waste picked up curbside on garbage days, or call the City's Toxic Taxi for pick up.

Ron Plain, anti-Line 9 activist, needs our help
Ron Plain, an environmental justice campaigner from the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Sarnia, is facing jail and severe fines as a result of a CN Rail court action. The suit has been filed in retaliation for Ron’s role as spokesperson for Aamjiwnaang demonstrators who blockaded a CN spur line on Aamjiwnaang territory in December as part of Canada-wide Idle No More demonstrations.

Enbridge has been responsible for at least 800 spills and have released nearly 7 million gallons of heavy crude oil into the environment. Three times in 5 years, Canada has seen one of its legislatures shut down when the government of the day was under fire. It seems that as Canadians, we are being conditioned to believe that question period is a mere formality rather than a means to hold the government accountable. Some observers have blamed the erosion of democracy on our antiquated First Past the Post voting system. Since this system makes it easier to form majority governments, it has helped increase the power of parties and their leaders, and to decrease the power of citizens, members, and even backbenchers and Ministers. With stronger parties, we also have more partisanship and less meaningful debate.
Peter Russell, a venerable constitutional scholar and advisor to Governor Generals, Borys Wrzesnewkyi, former Liberal MP, and Wayne Smith from Fair Vote Canada will be joining us for a discussion about the state of Canadian democracy and how Canadians can defend it.

Action Alert: Bike Lanes on Eglinton
We can get bike lanes built on Eglinton! The City is holding meetings where they’ll be presenting draft ideas for Eglinton Ave. They need to hear from you that any redesign of Eglinton Ave must include high quality cycling infrastructure. The idea is already gaining momentum. A recent Eglinton Connects survey (http://www.toronto.ca/eglinton/pdf/eg_connects_survey_results.pdf?) found that 85% of drivers support bike lanes on Eglinton! Our Chief Planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, is also thrilled about the idea: “What I love about Eglinton is, if you look at the city geographically in the middle, it runs almost the length of the city. COPE members at Porter Airlines are on strike. These workers, members of cope, local 343, are fighting for their first contract. issues are: * poverty wages * average $13.00 per hour * health and safety Already the lowest-paid workers in the airline industry, half of the Porter workers are being told to take a 25 cent an hour increase, the other half a wage freeze. This while Porter continues to expand and while the average striker makes $28,000 a year when at work. Porter also has a terrible workplace safety record and is not responding to the union’s efforts to bargain improvements.

For the first time, a Canadian mining company is being brought to court in this country for crimes committed overseas. On the evening before the trial begins, join us as we gather to share stories. Members of indigenous Mayan Q’eqchi’ communities from El Estor, Guatemala have filed lawsuits in Ontario courts against Canadian mining company HudBay Minerals over brutal shootings and rapes at HudBay’s former mining project in Guatemala.
We will hear from Angelica Choc, one of the claimants, as she describes her struggle to seek justice for the murder of her husband, Adolfo Ich. We will hear from Krysta Williams from the Native Youth Sexual Health Network about indigenous people fighting for reproductive and environmental justice here. Through our stories, poetry, art, and voices we will build connections across the borders that keep us and our movements apart. We will map out the ways colonization affects us all.
