The Case for U.S. War Resisters
Fundraising dinner in support of Kimberly Rivera’s legal defense

Monday March 25, 6 pm Dinner, 7 pm Programme
Steelworkers Hall, 25 Cecil Street
$20 suggested donation

With guest speakers :
• Alyssa Manning – lawyer representing Iraq War resisters in Canada
• James Branum – lawyer representing several Iraq war resisters facing court martial by the US military

Ten years ago, mass opposition to the war pushed the Canadian government to declare that Canada would not participate in the illegal invasion of Iraq. US soldiers who came to Canada after refusing to participate in the war were welcomed by Canadians, as Vietnam resisters had been. Yet the Conservative government has ignored this support and two motions passed by Parliament and has worked to force war resisters back to the US where they face harsh punishment. Most recently, Kim Rivera and her family were forced out and Kim is now awaiting court martial for her conscientious stand. Since the Rivera family was forced out, the federal court issued a decision that found that the US military justice system doesn’t meet international standards for fairness. Please join us for this panel discussion to help raise much needed funds for Kim’s legal defense as she faces court-martial on April 29th.

Toronto Report Back from the 2013 Earth First! Organizers Conference:
Lessons in strategy and solidarity from communities across Turtle Island

Indigenous Resistance! Stop the Tar Sands! No Line 9 Reversal!

Tuesday March 26, 6:30 p.m.
OISE, room 2214, 252 Bloor Street West (closest TTC Station: St. George)
This space is wheelchair accessible and event is free

Speakers include:
- Amanda Lickers, Haudenosaunee from Nogijiwanong
- Vanessa Gray, Anishinabe from Aamjiwnaang First Nation

The resource extraction industry across Turtle Island is environmentally destructive, violates land treaties with First Nations and harms any community in its path. The Alberta Tar Sands is just one aspect of this industry and one of the fastest growing contributors to climate change. Indigenous communities downstream from the Tar Sands in Alberta continue to face the devastating health and environmental impacts of the pollutants and toxins. Oil spills in both Canada and the U.S have prompted action across Southern Ontario to oppose the pumping of Alberta Tar Sands bitumen by Enbridge Line 9 from Sarnia and through Toronto to Montreal.

From February 14th-18th, Indigenous organizers from communities directly affected by resource extraction, along with non-Indigenous delegates from the Tar Sands blockade and the No Line 9 Reversal Campaign, traveled to the Earth First! conference in the U.S to speak on a roundtable about resistance to the tar sands expansion project and to work towards developing collective strategies for resistance. This report back from attendees of the conference will include sharing strategies for supporting indigenous nations struggling against the tar sands and how we can build a broader movement against ecocide and colonialism.

Organized by the Association of Part Time Undergraduate Students (APUS), University of Toronto Graduate Students Union and OPIRG-Toronto.

Access without Fear: An interactive workshop for service providers

Thur. March 28, 9:30 - 3 pm
Friend's House, 60 Lowther Street (St. George Subway Station)
Accessible Space

The City of Toronto recently passed an ''Access Without Fear'' motion to provide services to residents, regardless of immigration status. How does this affect your work? Using an interactive games-based approach, this workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the barriers faced by undocumented residents in accessing services, and will also provide an opportunity for participants to share their successes and challenges in trying to making their agencies more accessible to undocumented residents. In particular, through the use of "forum theatre", participants will be able to experiment with ways that their agencies might be changed in order to help build a city where everyone can access services without fear of detention and deportation. Participants' own knowledge and experiences will be supplemented by concrete tools and information regarding the legal rights that undocumented residents have, and the legal issues that can come up when immigration enforcement visits an agency. Service providers will also receive a comprehensive package containing: a ''Know Your Rights'' booklet for undocumented residents. legal information for service providers, access to a video on the pressures faced by undocumented residents, a list of agencies that service providers can refer clients to

The workshop is FREE though registration is limited to 25 participants. Please register at http://bit.ly/14SHPvC to reserve a space.
Vegetarian breakfast and lunch provided. Certificates of participation will be given to those who attend the entire workshop.

This workshop is organized by the Immigration Legal Committee, No One Is Illegal - Toronto, and the Popular Legal Education Committee.

The Financial Walk of Shame
Stop Financing Destruction: Rising Tide Toronto and allies answer the Unist'ot'en’s call for solidarity actions against Chevron and those that finance their fracking projects

Thursday March 28, 8:30am: Gathering in front of RBC, 9 am we walk
RBC head office, Front and Bay

We will take to the streets in the heart of Toronto’s financial district and deliver messages to the top investors of Chevron, in solidarity with worldwide actions taking place on Saturday March 30th. As politicians and industry put economic growth ahead of common sense and indigenous rights, it is up to us to take direct action to raise the cost of pushing ahead with the project, and raise the stakes in the PR battle.

The Pacific Trail pipeline can still be stopped. There is a huge groundswell of public opinion against BC’s carbon corridor, the Unis’tot’en are mounting a determined resistance against incursions onto their territory, and a space is being carved out where we can change the course of Canada’s energy future. We know that dismantling the fossil fuel empire is a colossal task, but every action we do takes its toll. Chevron, this is just the start… your time has come, your days are numbered! No consent? No fracking pipelines, no climate crimes!

Open Shelter For The Homeless Now!
Rally and Outdoor Meal

Thursday, 28 March, 6 pm
Metro Hall, 55 John St (at King)

After weeks of determined community action to force the City to respond to the crisis of overcrowding in its shelter system, the Community Development and Recreation Committee met on March 18. Dozens of powerful deputations were presented by those with experience of homelessness, front line workers and advocates. Despite a staff report still trying to suggest that the shelters were adequate, the myth of a system that is coping with the needs of those on the streets died on the floor of that committee room. Its members called on Council to return to a policy of opening more shelter spaces when the system reached 90% capacity but, astoundingly, recommended only that 172 'flex beds' be opened. This means putting down mats on the floor of already overcrowded shelters and pushing capacity well beyond 96%. At the same time, the church run Out-of-the-Cold program is set to close at the end of March meaning more people will be looking for a bed in even fewer spaces.

There is no getting around it - we need new shelter space opened up immediately. When this issue comes back to City Council on April 3rd, that is the decision that needs to be made by councillors. So, we are holding a rally and community meal for the homeless and all supporters on March 28 at Metro Hall - a building that was opened to the homeless in 1999 and could be open again. And we are going back to City Council on April 3rd to show that we are not backing down.

It has been suggested that we must move away from shelters and create housing - and we agree that we have to build a movement that fights for the right of everyone to have a home. But a City that lets people die on the streets for lack of shelter beds has no intention of housing them. And a City that has 90 000 households on the waiting list for social housing and skyrocketing rents cannot deny the necessity of shelters. We must force those in power to deal with the immediate crisis on the streets and open new shelter space without further excuses or delays.
