Petition: Reduce Military Spending

Join the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and call on the Federal government to redirect Military spending and to invest in urgent human and environmental needs.

Please sign our petition at http://vowpeace.org/our-work/petition-reduce-military-spending/ and forward to your friends. Help us to spread the word and make a difference.

In 2012, the Canadian government spent $22.7 billion on National Defence but only $1.6 billion on Environment Canada. The federal government is planning to spend $25 billion on new warships, $16 billion on new fighter jets and $1 billion on armed drones. However, the greatest human security challenges are climate change and poverty.

Monday April 22, 7 p.m.
Council Chambers, North York Civic Centre, 5100 Yonge Street (Yonge and Empress Walk - South West Corner, North York Civic Centre subway station)

Acclaimed photographer James Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Traveling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his well-being in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. After the film finishes (approximately 80 minutes) there will be a discussion about the work of Citizens Climate Lobby in Toronto.

Tuesday April 23, 6:30 p.m.
OISE (252 Bloor St. W), Room 2214

A discussion of Canada’s changing foreign policy under the Harper government. Urban Cycling Refresher: Tips, Tricks and Best Practice Q&A
With Yvonne Bambrick

Tues. April 23, 5 pm - 6:30 pm
CSI Annex, 720 Bathurst St., Annex Lounge
Free

If any of these apply, this session is right up your alley!
	• I love riding my bike to get around town for all kinds of reasons
	• Recreational cycling is something I like to do for a little weekend fun
	• I’m thinking about getting back on my bike but feeling a little rusty
	• I keep hearing about bikes this, and bikes that, and want to know more

Bicycles, the greenest form of transportation on the planet (besides your feet), are the most efficient vehicles on our streets. Using a bike as one of your ‘urban mobility tools’ not only saves you money, helps you lower your carbon footprint, and get a bit of exercise, it can also save you a lot of time. You can choose your own route, stop anywhere you like on a whim along the way, and usually get there in a fraction of the time it might take if you were stuck in traffic.

We’ll discuss the following: basic rules/etiquette of the road, rights and responsibilities of cyclists, how to properly lock your bike, traffic violations that apply to cyclists, what to do in case of a collision and how to avoid them, clothing / riding in all weather, using your gears, how to carry stuff, and other ways to make your ride more enjoyable. Undoubtedly, we will also get into the politics of cycling–oh joy! The Q & A portion should be most interesting, so bring your most niggling bikey questions – someone else will probably be wondering the same thing ;)

(Un)Sound Occupation
A 4-evening workshop dedicated to sound and politics

April 23 – 26, 7 – 10 p.m.
Trinity Square Video, 401 Richmond West #376
Free.

This workshop series offers a wonderful opportunity to explore a new way of conceptualizing protest, and the world around us: through sound. The series aims to bring sound artists and activists together to explore the following questions:
How might sound be employed by artists and activists to hear a radically different future than the same old one the system keeps playing for us?
What kinds of sonic tactics might be used in the context of a demonstration/protest?
Can an analysis of how sound is used in mass media offer future modes of intervention?
Can zones of radical openness be conceptualized away from the feedback control and capture essential to capitalist power?
Sound has huge potential in Toronto's protest scene, and this is the space to explore how, and engage sound artists in the politics of sound.

Confront Barrick Gold

Wed. April 24, 9:30 a.m. - noon

Around the world, Barrick robs Indigenous people of their lands, destroys sensitive ecosystems and agricultural land, supports brutal police and security operations, and sues anyone who tries to report on it. But despite repression and a sophisticated PR machine, the truth is getting out about this corporate criminal.

Once a year, the board of Directors of the world’s most powerful gold mining corporation converge in downtown Toronto. This year, we're releasing a report that chronicles Barrick's lies and highlights the true stories behind their false CSR spin. Help us ensure that these stories don't get ignored. Join us as we debunk Barrick's lies and help create a powerful movement of solidarity against Barrick and corporate impunity. Extra Virgin .... You Don't Say
A Chemist reveals the secrets of Olive Oil

Thursday, April 25 @ 7 pm
612 Markham (Bloor and Bathurst)

Patriarchal society and systems seem to be obsessed with the concept of "virginity". In recent years this obsession has encompassed "extra virgin" olive oil. Is there a connection? With the enormous popularity and appreciation of extra virgin olive oil people are asking what is "extra virgin" olive oil? Why is it so desirable? Why is the industry around it so scandalous? This event is programmed by Beit Zatoun and offered by Peter Brickell, a chemist who is long-time supporter and serves as in-house chemist to Zatoun (the progenitor of Beit Zatoun - was it a virgin birth?). He has a natural teacher's ability to bring fascinating and unique insights into a food process many do not fully understand or appreciate. As has been revealed by the recent book, Salt, Sugar, and Fat by Michael Moss there are enormous, hidden and harmful impacts of food chemistry in our lives and health. Do not miss this wild ride into the secrets of olive oil.

Dismantle the TPP - A People’s Resistance to Corporate Globalization
Join us to discuss and share strategies to build a peoples movement to stop the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and explore sustainable and equitable forms of trade.

Friday, April 26 – 6:30-9:00pm

Facilitators- Eva Portillio - Coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean solidarity network , Stuart Trew Trade campaigner for the Council of Canadians and Raul Burbano, Program Director for Common Frontiers. Special guests from Mexico and Peru via skype

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) pretends to be a 21st Century Trade Deal. It purports to “open new markets and create new business opportunities” for all participating countries. But 30 years of neoliberal free trade is enough to show us these corporate rights pacts only benefit the elite and increase inequality. The TPP can only create new barriers to an alternative economic future where living well and protecting the earth are more important than corporate profits. It will undermine the ability of communities to collectively decide what is in their best interests.

Expanding the Canada Health Act: Pharmacare and Beyond
Students for Medicare’s 5th Annual Conference

Saturday, April 27
Steelworkers’ Hall, 25 Cecil Street (near Spadina and College)

People in Canada have repeatedly shown that healthcare is one of the biggest issues on their minds. While most can agree on the sanctity of health, there is often disagreement over how our system should work - Who should pay? Who should deliver services? What should be covered? Recently, many have been looking at the merits of a national pharmacare program in Canada. Just last month, Pharmacare 2020: Envisioning Canada’s Future brought together various stakeholders in Vancouver while nine provincial governments negotiate a bulk-purchasing initiative to get better value for drugs. Arguments are being made on the basis of equity, accessibility, quality of care and cost savings. Join us to hear the answers to some of these questions and to ask your own! We will hear from our experts and have plenty of opportunity for discussion and organizing for action! Whether you are a student, a health care provider or a community member, these issues affect us all and we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Students for Medicare advocates for maintaining and strengthening a publicly-funded, not-for-profit health care system. We affirm that the solutions lie within the publicly-funded system envisioned by Tommy Douglas and his eventual plan for a second stage of Medicare. We are students and practitioners of nursing, pharmacy, medicine, public policy, other disciplines, and allies.
